Chapter 81: Actually guilty!

Elder Ren sighed as she quickly calmed herself down and spoke, "Forget it. Even if you had a good relationship with him, it doesn’t matter now. All ties to the living world are cut when crossing the yellow river."

Duan Luoyang frowned as he heard this and for a second there, he looked to be saddened.

"Jie Fu Lian is the reason why the demonic beasts started attacking us," Elder Ren continued as she explained, "He made a contract with the king of the demonic beasts and as you know, if a cultivator makes a contract with a demonic beast, he would be in charge of feeding them, giving them shelter and taking care of them. However, if a cultivator fails to fulfill his duties, the demonic beast would go rampant and seek revenge."

There was a sigh of relief that Jie Fu Lian dare not let out as he thought, ’Finally, there is something I’m actually guilty of doing...!’

He certainly remembered making a contract with a very powerful demonic beast but since the demonic beast was actually the king of the demonic beasts residing in the Pheonix mountains. Jie Fu Lian dare not bring it back to the Yan sect.

At the time, he was seeking to improve his reputation and become more famous than Hua Tianshu so he traveled through the phoenix mountain in hopes of defeating monsters and saving people, however, on the way, he came across a demonic beast that was on the verge of death.

The only way he could save the poor creature was through a contract and hence, without thinking too much about it, he made a contract with the king of the demonic beasts. However, later on, he could not take the demonic beast back with him to the Yan Sect and hence parted with the creature.

After that, he never heard anything about the creature again.

"We were the closest sect to the Pheonix mountains and hence, the demonic beasts attacked us. Their king warned us time and time again to bring Daoist Jie Fu Lian to him. After the first two attacks, eight years ago, we sent numerous letters to Jie Fu Lian but he never replied nor did he come."

At the time, there were a lot of people writing letters to him and Jie Fu Lian simply didn’t have the time to read any of them so unless the letter came from the HuiXue sect, he threw them all away without any hesitation.

"When he died, we were a bit glad and told the demonic beast that Jie Fu Lian had died, however, the demonic beast refused to believe it."

Of course, the demonic beasts wouldn’t believe them. A contract was made with the soul and not the body. Unless the soul was destroyed, the contract would never be broken. Since Jie Fu Lian had a contract with the king of the demonic beasts, that creature would naturally know the best whether Jie Fu Lian had truly died or not.

"Since then, the attacks have been happening almost two times every month and in the end, our sect was turned into a wasteland. The only thing they did not touch was the statue of our founder and that’s why it still stands today. Most of us do not have a home to return to and hence, we refuse to leave this place. Even after being constantly harassed by those demonic beasts, we still rebuild our temporary houses and live here because we do not have another choice."

Jie Fu Lian certainly felt a little guilty as he heard this.

"We thought things couldn’t get worse but a few months ago, the attacks increased in frequency, and just three days ago, even our sect master was abducted by the king of the demonic beasts. Unless we bring Cultivator Jie Fu Lian to them, they would not be returning our sect master. As for our inner disciples, they would probably be killed one by one as a warning," Elder Ren sighed as she added.

"Your case is certainly a bit pitiful but Jie Fu Lian is already dead so how do you suppose we help you?" Hua Tianshu asked.

The woman smiled as she heard this and spoke, "You and your friends are strong. If you can defeat the king of demonic beasts, wouldn’t our sect master return and our inner disciples survive?"

"We both have the same cultivation realm and from the looks of it, you seem to be more practiced than me," Hua Tianshu blatantly revealed and asked, "If you can’t beat that thing, how do you expect us to beat it?"

"That doesn’t sound like my problem," The woman smiled as she responded.

"..."

"You should try to figure that out yourself. Since you are here to ask for my help, you should first do something that would benefit me. Only then would I be compelled to help you."

Jie Fu Lian couldn’t help but feel that this woman should have been a businesswoman and not a cultivator.

"This feels like we are being tricked," Jie Fu Lian sighed as he spoke up, "The female disciples of the Yu Sect are rumored to be powerful. I used to think their stories were exaggerated but after meeting madam Jin Shifeng, I realized that there was definitely truth in those rumors. You’re telling me we are more capable of beating those demonic beasts than you? Don’t you think that sounds awfully suspicious?"

Elder Ren thinly smiled as she heard this and nodded her head as she spoke, "You are right, but most of our female disciples are currently in seclusion and they must not be disturbed."

"Every last one of them?" Jie Fu Lian raised his eyebrows as he questioned.

"The ones that weren’t in seclusion have already been abducted along with our sect master."

Jie Fu Lian didn’t know if he was supposed to laugh or not as he heard this.

"And what about you?" Jie Fu Lian blurted out but before the woman could respond, he coughed as he corrected himself and tried to sound a bit respectful, "I don’t mean to offend you but I can’t help but be awfully curious about Elder Ren. Brother Hua Tianshu has a lower cultivation level than you but you still insist on sending him rather than going by yourself."

"There isn’t a grand reason," Elder Ren sighed as she calmly replied, "If I go and die, there would be no one capable left to protect our sect."

"..."

So it was okay to send three outsiders to their possible deaths...?

"However, I can understand your worries," The woman continued with a sigh as she stood up and looked at the wall that was covered with masks.

Jie Fu Lian patiently waited for her as he carefully looked at her every little action.

The woman stared at the different masks one by one.

All the masks were made based on her face, however, they all had different expressions and while some had makeup on them, others had additional features such as sharp animal teeth or horns. No two masks were the same and at the same time, at a glance, they all looked the same.

After about ten minutes of careful deliberation, Elder Ren finally picked out a mask that had a plain face with just a single red dot on the forehead.

"Take this with you," She spoke as she wiped the dust on the mask with her own dress sleeve.

"A mask?" Hua Tianshu raised his eyebrow as he asked.

The woman nodded her head as she handed the mask over to the man and spoke, "It’s a mask that may very well save your life if there be a need."

Her words were pretty vague and didn’t give them much explanation about the specialty of the mask but from what she had said, it could be guessed that this mask wasn’t as ordinary as it looked.

There was probably something special about it.

"If you want, you can also take along our sect disciple who brought you here, just in case," Elder Ren suggested.

"There will be no need for that," Jie Fu Lian quickly refused her polite offer.

The man threw both his shoes at Jie Fu Lian and even attacked him with a sword. It was probably not a good idea to take such a man along on an important mission.

"The three of us will help you," Hua Tianshu spoke up as he looked at Elder Ren, "But you must give us the information that we ask even if it is a secret that can never leave this sect."

When Elder Ren heard the latter sentence, her face stiffened but she still nodded her head as she hesitantly agreed.

From her reaction alone it could be seen that there was definitely something that she had been planning to hide. It was a good thing that Hua Tianshu had decided to speak up first and made their terms clear.

Jie Fu Lian looked down at the woman’s painting brush as he thought about something and spoke, "Elder Ren, I hope you don’t try to trick us. If we can beat the demonic beasts for you then we can definitely destroy the statue of your sect founder. You wouldn’t want the last thing standing to also crumble down, would you?"

Elder Ren glared at Jie Fu Lian as she heard this but said nothing.

From the looks of it, Jie Fu Lian wasn’t saying this just for the sake of scaring the woman.
