Chapter 81: Chapter 81: Leave the Danger to Us

Chen Qinghan told me that the Heavenly Maiden Clan is particularly fond of the moon. In the ancient tombs, many moon symbols or carvings can be found.

From the ’symbols’ I saw, it was easy to tell this was true. The clan symbols all featured moon designs.

Each symbol represents a faction, which is information I recently recalled from memory.

As for the moon, I couldn’t retrieve any related memories.

Upon entering, there was a small hall, clean and empty.

Pete and the others had already inspected it, confirming that there were no traps in this small hall; it seemed to be a regular entrance.

Here, they put on full protective gear, wearing white overalls as if they were entering a gas chamber.

Pete asked if we wanted them. He had spares, but renting them would cost money.

Imagine that! Is this how a scholar talks? They’ve become completely money-minded!

Of course, we did not rent them.

Dressed like astronauts, complete with oxygen tanks on their backs, moving in the tomb with danger lurking, there’s barely time to escape.

Pete pretended to suggest splitting into teams because there were two doors in the hall. Jerry probably knew in advance, which is why he said he wanted to join me and Qinghan.

They discovered something but wouldn’t tell us. Naturally, Qinghan and I just found out.

Everyone in that group kept silent except for Jerry, who stood up and said he wanted to be with us.

He hadn’t mentioned it last night when we were drinking, so the other team members were surprised to hear him say this. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

Yesterday, they saw him bringing me wine and meat, thinking he was just trying to be friendly, not expecting he’d actually want to join us.

Pete coughed awkwardly; the ’free’ choice was his idea. Now he couldn’t take it back, so he used his eyes to urge Jerry to retract this foolish decision.

Jerry firmly stood by Qinghan and me. The conversations we had yesterday were heard by Qinghan in the tent, so he knew Jerry would join us today, showing no change in expression.

From Qinghan’s and my attitude, it was clear we both knew Jerry would ’betray,’ and Pete forced a smile, patting Jerry on the shoulder, wishing him well and good luck.

Then, Pete took out a coin, using heads or tails to decide who would take which path.

I and Qinghan saw through Pete’s slight trick while tossing the coin but didn’t expose it.

Gaining experience in the Heavenly Maiden Tomb, as Qinghan had numerous times, he once told me that in these tombs, there is never a safe route.

Except for those damaged by natural disasters or directly destroyed by violence.

To elaborate, there are classifications; some Heavenly Maiden Tombs have simple structures, without underground passages. These lack traps and remarkable things.

Those affected by natural disasters and human damage are mostly of this type.

Another type, like the Lake Bottom Tomb we visited, with ferocious monsters guarding it, always contains items of uncertain purpose in the coffin.

Having a hall and passageway, including branching paths, indicates that this Heavenly Maiden Tomb in the Jade Country should belong to the latter.

Jerry followed us into the ’Heavenly Chosen’ left passageway. He even failed to notice Pete’s little trick, naively praying this was the safe route.

As we entered the passage, I couldn’t help but turn to him and say, "Can you take off that goofy outfit?"

A hefty guy in a white overall walking beside me—and he’s already tall and broad—makes the passage feel much narrower as soon as he steps in.

Qinghan quickly interjected, "No worries, these ancient tombs have been sealed for ages; they likely contain toxic gas. Wearing protective suits is safer."

I immediately glared at him, thinking: "Safe? Deceiving the young with no conscience, huh?"

Jerry hesitated for a moment, but then took off the suit, "I’m fine, let’s let you wear it."

I quickly pushed the suit away, adding a cold sneer. Even if he wore Iron Man’s gear, he wouldn’t be safer than me without clothes.

"Take care of yourself, Little Jerry."

Jerry glanced at Qinghan again, perhaps realizing Qinghan is my ’guardian’; only he can sway me.

"She doesn’t need it, you keep it," Qinghan remained forever on my side.

Bouncing merrily, I hummed a tune as I walked forward, only to be abruptly halted as I stepped on a loose floor tile.

Quick like lightning, Qinghan seized my backpack and pulled me back.

Arrows instantly rained down the passage, firing relentlessly from the walls, clattering against the opposite wall and floor.

Jerry uttered a low cry; his reaction was noticeably slower than Qinghan’s.

Only having the chance to fear afterwards, I stuck my tongue out, realizing my forward stride was merely absent-minded without thoughts of traps capable of killing me. Yet Qinghan’s glaring hint made me instantly aware that Jerry was an outsider; exposing my invincibility could prove risky as he might spread the news.

I confess I was a bit overconfident, feeling relaxed as if returning home upon entering the tomb, letting down my guard.

"Whoa, so scary~" I pretended fear, patting my chest.

Qinghan bluntly ignored me, but Jerry chimed in, "Yes, that was really dangerous; you must be cautious."

"Have you been down here before?" I suddenly asked him.

"Yes, entered the small hall outside," Jerry replied.

"And the others, have they entered the passage?" I continued.

"Uh... I don’t know. At the time, someone got injured, and I took him back to camp."

Indeed, this was the situation once; one day, Jerry single-handedly escorted someone with a fractured arm back to camp.

Meaning, upon his and the injured party’s departure, the others could have explored both paths and found the left one more dangerous, thus leaving this path for us.

"They’ve surely explored the route, discovering this path’s peril, then manipulated the coin flip, deliberately leaving the dangerous path for us," I openly shared my thoughts, indifferent to Jerry’s response.

He should know his teammates well, aware of what kind of people they are.

Qinghan and I hadn’t crossed the main entrance, making it implausible to deceive him.

Expressing my thoughts as well was to let Jerry comprehend that following us equated numerous traps ahead; retreat was still timely.

"Sorry, I will help you guys," Jerry apologized without criticizing his teammates, simply clarifying his stance.

"Hmph, whose help it will be remains uncertain." His lack of rebuttal said it all; he had some conscience. Regardless of his motive, if he obediently followed us, protecting him wouldn’t be a bother.

Qinghan nudged me back; leading the front himself, I retreated behind Jerry, forming the rear since some dangers might approach from there.
