The Kingmaker System-Chapter 39 - 38. A Mage And A Knight (1)
Chapter 39: 38. A Mage And A Knight (1)
The week passed by quickly and I along with Lyall were on our way to put my plan in action.
"Have you heard of the gate?" I asked Lyall who was with me in the carriage that we had rented.
"Gate? You mean the Magic Gate that the Mage’s Tower had set up?"
I nodded.
"I do know a bit but I haven’t travelled through it."
"Well, today you’re going to experience it."
"Pardon? What?"
I smiled at his reaction as I leaned back in my seat. The Gate was the teleportation portal that the Mage’s Tower had set up a few years ago to make the long distance travel easier.
There were a total of five portals four on the four parts of the kingdom that would make easier for the people to travel in the far parts of the kingdom while the last one was exclusively in the Royal palace for the Imperial family or the VVIPs to travel anywhere they wanted.
"Why... did you bring me along though? You haven’t even told me where we’re going."
"I did tell you that we’re going to a place that will help us get stronger."
"Are you planning to destroy the continent?" He asked me and I chuckled.
"If there’s a need to then I might."
Lyall sighed shaking his head, his condition had changed completely after I had officially recruited him. His clothes were clean, his skin after getting fed seemed healthy, his greasy hair was replaced by clean brown locks that were now tied back at his nape and the facial hair on his jaw and upperlips was gone leaving behind a fairly good-looking face.
For now, he was disguised as a mercenary bodyguard for me with his sword hanging by his side and his daggers hidden in his waistband.
His family– wife Lizzy and his twelve year old daughter Kate– had shifted to the mansion which I had bought under the name of Baron Ocean Ryujin and they seemed really happy to have a good job and a place to stay.
"Can I ask you something?" Lyall spoke up and I looked at him.
"Go ahead."
"Why did you choose me?" He asked.
"I mean, you took in not only my family but also my friends from the assassination guild... Are you planning on a mass murder or something?" He asked the question hesitantly and I laughed.
I had asked him to bring his assassin friends because I knew I would need more personnel around the Ryujin mansion and instead of having knights I preferred assassins.
"I’m not planning mass murder, Lyall." I clarified, "your friends will kill but only when I tell you to."
"But... Why assassins? I mean, you could hire knights."
"Hire knights? And do what? Have them train all day and feed them for nothing?"
Lyall looked at me with a confused expression.
"Can you tell me the exact work of you assassins?"
"Assassination...?"
"Be more detailed, Lyall. If you are given a target what procedure do you follow?"
Lyall licked his lips as he started, "I follow the target, get as much information about him as possible and when the time is perfect I kill him and get out of there."
"In short, you gather intel, you know when to strike, you cleanly do your work and then you exit the scene without much problems." I summarised and he nodded.
"Yes."
"If I give a knight the same work, what would he do?" ƒгeewёbnovel.com
Lyall opened his mouth to answer, "He would..."
He seemed a bit confused and I smiled, "I’ll tell you."
"First of all, he would make a big deal out of killing that person, he would eventually kill him but he would need a glorifying justification for that murder and it wouldn’t be done secretively at all. That guy might as well write a duel letter to the target and have a match in front of a huge crowd."
I sighed and Lyall stared at me.
"Sounds troublesome.*
"It is."
"And you don’t want all that trouble that’s why you hired us?"
"Assassins are the best in offense and you also know how to hide yourself so, best defense as well. If I have you around then why would I need knights?"
Lyall was quiet for a moment before he asked, "Are you really a noble?"
I laughed at his question.
I was used to trusting the secret agencies more than the actual police force, the police were great at their job too but their work was usually in the public’s eyes and I preferred secrecy. Hence, the Assassins were my best bet here.
"We’re approaching the Gate." The coachman called out.
"You might suffer some motion sickness," I told Lyall.
"I’ll be fine." He replied and I smiled.
After a few minutes, we crossed the Gate, I felt the sudden fluctuation in the space magic. I was used to the teleportation that’s why it didn’t affect me but Lyall’s face grew pale and then green. He gripped his mouth and stomach and I called the coachman to stop the carriage.
Lyall literally flew out of the carriage and threw up at the roots of the tree which was close by. I stepped down behind him and looked around the place which was the border of the territory.
The cold and crisp wind was enough to chill anyone as if the air itself was the first line of defense for the place which threw out any weak hearted person. The massive mountains stood at the far north seemed as if they went straight to the heavens.
This place wasn’t for the weak-hearted.
I looked at Lyall who was coughing and crouching near the tree.
"Are you all right?" I asked.
"Blegh..."
"Guess not."
I looked at the coachman who was looking around with a sense of urgency in his movements.
"Can you hurry up? I need to leave you at the inn and return before dusk." He called us out and I looked at him.
"All right." I said and walked up to Lyall, I patted his back casting the Healing spell on a small scale making him slowly get back to normal.
His wound was also healed up when he first came to see me at the Ryujin mansion, he was amazed to see that in addition to flying, I was capable of healing serious wounds.
"Let’s get going." I said as I pushed him inside the carriage and it started moving ahead.
It was still forest area so I kept my Mana Sense on, I had taken all precautions before coming here and it wasn’t easy to persuade my family to let me go.
They had did all they could to stop me but it didn’t work and I left with a promise that I would return as soon as I can. Only they didn’t know that my "soon" meant minimum two months.
Silas must be pissed off knowing where I was headed and Darren would be in trouble for that.
I had ended up coaxing Darren into giving me some information that was meant for the Mage’s Tower and I had run away with it so, I was sure Silas would have a field day with it.
"Where... are we?" Lyall asked as he looked out of the carriage window.
I suddenly felt the presence of something hostile and the carriage shuddered before we heard the scream of the coachman.
"What the hell was that?" Lyall gasped.
I looked out of the window and saw a huge bear standing in the path, by the looks of it, it didn’t seem like a normal bear. There was a strange black mist around bear which made my mana tingle.
The bear roared as it dashed towards the carriage and I got out of the carriage kicking in the bear’s huge furry chest after activating my Supreme Strength.
The monster flew away and slammed into a large tree making it shudder, I landed in front of the horses that were panicked and reached out and brushed my hands over their heads calming them down.
The horses seemed to understand the gesture as they calmed down instantly confirming the thing that I read in the book about the Dragons.
The life forms except for humans and the aura-users were either scared of Dragons or revered them naturally and since I had the Dragon’s mana the horses seemed to have noticed it.
"Y-You kicked that monster so far away!" The coachman squeaked as he saw me.
"Master!" Lyall stepped out of the carriage and the bear stood up again.
"What the hell is that thing? A bear isn’t that huge."
Lyall came beside me with his unsheathed sword already in his hand.
"Defeat that." I ordered and Lyall looked at me before he stepped ahead without any hesitation.
The bear roared and slashed its claws at Lyall who went against him. I stood near the carriage watching the fight, Lyall was doing good against the bear who was nearly twice the size.
Little did he know that the one he was using a sword against was a rogue shifter of the bear clan.
"He-He’s really strong." The coachman gasped as he stared the fight in awe.
"He’s taking too much time." I mumbled making the coachman look at me.
"What?!" He squeaked, "Pa-Pardon me, My Lord but the-there are only a few who can actually go against the-these monsters. Only the Seraph Knights are capable of defeating these kinds of monsters."
"Uh huh." I nodded as Lyall dealt the final blow and the bear was on the ground, dead.
The coachman’s jaw was on the ground as I walked up to Lyall who was wiping the sweat from his brow.
"Was it too difficult?" I asked.
"It was too strong and fast, completely different from the normal bear. I guess I could say it was a little difficult."
"You’ll need training." I surmised and he stared at me.
"Pardon?"
"This wasn’t enough?"
"Nope, but you will improve quickly by fighting a few more." I concluded making him look back at the bear which was blocking the path, I walked up to it and kicked its carcass off the road and then turned to look at Lyall.
"Your training starts now, Lyall."
