Chapter 243: Unwarranted jealousy (2)

Linda noticed how Alessandra did not want to shake her hand until Hazel spoke up to get her to. Did Alessandra know that she once loved Edgar? That despite saying she had moved on from him, she still carried feelings for him?

How was it that she had failed to capture Edgar’s attention yet this woman who was said to be cursed came around and married him out of the blue? The baron’s daughter of all people. Linda had always heard that the baron’s daughter was annoying and that not many loved the baron himself.

It was strange that Alessandra, who was not seen around the town, had gotten Edgar to marry her. It couldn’t be that Alessandra had outsmarted Edgar and had something against him. That could never happen and Linda didn’t believe the two had fallen in love.

It felt like some sort of betrayal for Hazel to have Alessandra in the palace. Linda understood that Tobias and Edgar were close but did Hazel truly need to be close to Edgar’s wife? It couldn’t be that Hazel had forgotten about her crush.

As Alessandra and Hazel spoke, Linda would occasionally jump into the conversation though she disliked it. Her mother might have been right about staying home. She made the mistake of agreeing to stay in the palace to be with Alessandra but maybe, she could stay so as not to lose her friend.

"Wonderful. We’re going to my bedroom," Hazel told Linda then turned to Alessandra to hold her hand as they walked. "We’ll start our plans another time, Alessandra."

Linda wished to know what plans they were referring to so she asked, "What plans?"

Linda didn’t see how Hazel could find a friend in the duchess. What exactly did the two have in common? Was Hazel doing this because she felt the need to be close to the wife of the king’s best friend? Linda did not see the need for Hazel to force herself.

Linda did not enjoy that Hazel and Alessandra shared a look as though they had silently agreed to leave her out. It wasn’t like Hazel to do this. They shared all of their secrets so why now that Alessandra was in the picture did that change?

"It’s nothing," Hazel replied, feeling guilty for keeping a secret from Linda. In time Linda would find out what her plan was for Alessandra and she had no doubt that Linda would want to join in.

Like her, Linda didn’t get along well with the young women who flocked to women like Priscilla Collins, Alessandra’s mother-in-law.

’Is this because I didn’t go to the ball?’ Linda wondered. It didn’t make any sense for Hazel to be this way. Though she had not been visiting as much as she used to, she still sent letters.

Linda didn’t think she should always be expected to be here considering this was the year that she wanted to get married so she could not always be by Hazel’s side. She was here to explain that her family had been keeping her busy but it turned out that she didn’t need to as Hazel had found another friend.

Linda smiled, hiding her hurt behind it. "I see. You two are already close. You aren’t using her title."

When Hazel held parties for the women in town, she didn’t easily allow for someone to drop her title unless she truly liked them and the amount of women to receive that honour was few.

Not only had Alessandra gotten Edgar to like her so fast but she had also succeeded with Alessandra.

Was there some truth to the curse Alessandra was said to have or was she just being childish?

’I am a fool,’ Linda realised, but still, she couldn’t stop disliking Alessandra.

Linda once again did not pay much attention to Hazel and Alessandra talking, only jumping in when she wanted to remind the two of her presence. "Hazel, did you get a new guard? What happened to the old one?"

Linda was aware that her father had been helping Hazel with the guards assigned to her.

Hazel looked at Caleb, the duchess’s guard who was still following them. She wished for him to vanish so they could speak and their words not go back to Edgar. Hazel knew that once the guard returned to Edgar’s side, he would speak of all that the duchess did today.

Hazel explained. "No, he’s with Alessandra. You would not believe Edgar of all people is so paranoid that he thinks his wife will get hurt when she’s by my side. I am trying to convince Alessandra that she has him wrapped around her finger. Aren’t they cute, Linda?"

Linda smiled, pretending to agree with Hazel. She hurried up to walk beside Hazel so she would not be a third wheel in the group. ’The cutest."

Both Linda and Hazel missed Alessandra’s reaction.

Alessandra sensed that there was something wrong regarding Linda but she didn’t know what she had done to upset her. She had never met Linda before so there shouldn’t be a problem, but then again, many found her to be uncomfortable to be around because they believed that she was cursed.

Alessandra touched her mask which might be the source of Linda not wanting her around. She wasn’t confident to walk around without it. She had not even shown Edgar her face.

The only time she took off the mask was when she had to wash up or when she slept, but even then she would back Edgar and he would not pry to see her face.

Alessandra thought about leaving so Linda wouldn’t be uncomfortable but when she entered Hazel’s room, her mind changed.

Linda somehow ended up alone as Hazel showed Alessandra around the room and spoke with Alessandra’s guard. This day might be one of the worst days she had inside the palace. What could she do to have this just go back to her and Hazel?

Linda would be more thrilled to have someone joining their small group if it was anyone other than Edgar’s wife. She couldn’t help but wonder if Alessandra knew about her feelings.

Linda joined the two to sit outside where Hazel had prepared a lot for Alessandra’s visit. She was in luck that there were more than two chairs so she wouldn’t be reminded of the fact this time was meant only for Hazel and Alessandra.

Linda didn’t enjoy that to sit beside Hazel, she ended up needing to face Alessandra.

Hazel noticed that the two were quiet so she pointed to the food and said, "I had the cook prepare all of my favourites. I hope you like them. Try anything you like. I won’t judge how much you want to eat."

Alessandra was surprised by how much Hazel had prepared for two people. She didn’t know where to start. She was meant to be increasing her weight since she had not been fed well during her time with her family so it would be good to share with Edgar that she ate a lot. "Thank you. There’s so much to choose from."

Since they were alone, Hazel took it upon herself to serve Alessandra. "Then, I will pick for you."

Linda looked at Hazel who might have gone mad. Why would the queen serve anyone even if it was a duchess? "Hazel, you are the queen. You should not be picking out food for anyone. We should be doing that for you."

Alessandra could only smile though she found the length Linda was going to be a little insulting. How badly did Linda view her that she could not be served by the queen? It wasn’t like she had asked Hazel to do it. Hazel seemed excited to be a good host so she did not want to turn down the offer.

Hazel was greatly confused by Linda taking the plate from her hands and starting to serve Alessandra. Hazel had served Linda when they were alone as she liked doing simple tasks when she could so why was Linda acting this way now? freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

Hazel couldn’t ignore the change with Linda right now. Something was happening with Linda and now was not the time to be acting this way before the duchess. It was spoiling Alessandra’s first visit to the palace.

Linda picked out a few treats for Alessandra and then asked, "Is that alright with you, Alessandra?"

Alessandra answered, "Yes."

"Linda, you’re no fun," Hazel muttered.

Alessandra felt a bit awkward after having to deal with the dislike Linda had for her. She was excited to be in the palace with the queen, but Linda wasn’t making the time pleasant. Regardless of Linda not liking her, Alessandra was going to enjoy the trip.

She had Edgar come to the palace and it would not all be for nothing.

Hazel silently watched the two women, starting to notice that there was a little tension between the two. She couldn’t understand it as what she knew right now was that the two hadn’t met before today. She liked the two of them so she hoped they would become close soon.
