Chapter 244: Unwarranted jealousy (3)

’What is with these two?’ Hazel wondered.

The day wasn’t going as she planned and it was starting to bother her even more. It was odd that it seemed there was a bit of animosity coming from Linda when she was normally more welcoming unless she knew the person to be someone they shouldn’t have around.

Hazel looked to the duchess who didn’t look like she could hurt a fly. Alessandra seemed like she was shy but after a bit of talking, they would get to see a whole new side to her. There was something wrong with Linda these days and Hazel had to get to the bottom of it.

Once again when Hazel offered Alessandra a drink, Linda commented once more that she should let Alessandra pick what she wanted herself.

Hazel frowned as not only was Linda ruining the mood, but she had noticed how uncomfortable Alessandra was. She promised to take care of Alessandra with Edgar away so she couldn’t let Linda continue as she was now.

Hazel tried to save the moment by saying, "I am being a nice host, Linda. Do you feel like I am pestering you, Alessandra?"

"Not at all. I want to try your favourites. If it is possible, I would like to invite you to my home for you to try what I enjoy," Alessandra answered, hoping the queen would accept. She was in need of visits from women to her home.

Hazel couldn’t believe that she was personally receiving an invitation to Edgar’s home. She knew Edgar didn’t dislike her because he was the type to say it, but knew not to expect an invite to his home as he liked to be alone. "After all these years, I am finally receiving an invitation to Edgar’s home."

Linda shook her head at Alessandra for being so bold to invite someone to the Collins estate without Edgar’s permission. She was getting bold already when she had not been duchess for so long. "Edgar’s not the type to like people in his home. Shouldn’t you talk about this with him first? You shouldn’t get ahead of yourself and do what you please with his home."

Again, Hazel couldn’t believe her ears. Alessandra wasn’t some stranger inviting them to Edgar’s home. She was now his wife which meant the estate also belonged to her at this moment. Alessandra could do whatever she wanted and Hazel couldn’t see Edgar objecting to it.

Hazel was surprised by Alessandra’s response.

"Edgar won’t mind. It’s a house we share now that we’re married and he’s told me to do as I please. I will organise a day for you to visit," Alessandra quickly intervened.

Hazel smiled as she got to witness Alessandra defending herself. She was right that Alessandra would be just the person she needed in her circle and to help others in Lockwood.

While Hazel was happy to see Alessandra defend herself, she couldn’t take Linda’s behaviour any longer. Hazel stood from her seat, looking at Linda who tried to avoid her gaze. Linda had to have known that she was wrong with how she was treating Alessandra. "Come with me, Linda."

If something had occurred before today that she was not aware of and Alessandra had done something to Linda then Hazel would understand Linda’s behaviour and side with her. However, she was still certain that there was nothing for Linda to be upset about and she could not continue as she was now.

It was unfortunate that Hazel thought of making Linda leave. It would be the first time she had ever done something like that.

Hazel led Linda to a corner of the room so Alessandra could not hear them. Alessandra didn’t need to hear what kind of problem Linda had with her. "What is your problem, Linda? It’s like there is some underlying animosity to my guest. What is it?"

Hazel tried not to let her tone be harsh as she wanted to resolve this not argue. Alessandra and Linda would get along well as long as they moved past the tension.

"What are you talking about? There’s nothing going on-’

"Linda,’ Hazel stopped Linda in her tracks before she could lie. If there was no reason and Linda was just being mean because she could then Hazel didn’t know the person standing before her.

Hazel would hate to think that like many others, Linda had started to change as well. Linda was her best friend for years and if there was something above best friend, Linda was that for not changing over the years.

Linda was one of the people that kept her from harming herself. She could not lose Linda but she could not sit back and allow Linda to treat Alessandra poorly. Was it that Linda believed Alessandra to be cursed? It honestly sounded ridiculous that Alessandra could have a curse and she never thought Linda to be so gullible.

"We’ve been friends for a very long time. I know you better than you realise and there is something very wrong here. What is your issue with the duchess? As far as I am concerned, the two of you never met for there to be a problem."

Linda couldn’t believe that Hazel had to ask what her problem with Alessandra was. It should be obvious that she wouldn’t be so welcoming to the woman who had taken the man she liked. "Hazel, do you honestly not know why I am upset that you invited her here and did not mention a word of it to me?"

Hazel laughed as she couldn’t believe Linda thought she had to inform her about who was coming to the palace. She never questioned Linda about who was invited to her home. Also, how was she to know what Linda was thinking? They were good friends but she hadn’t come to the point of being able to read Linda’s mind.

’This is ridiculous,’ Hazel thought. It truly was like a stranger had been standing before her. "That’s why I am asking you what the problem is and I don’t need to be sending you a message about who was invited to the palace."

"You don’t have to but when it comes to Edgar’s wife you should!" Linda yelled, but she regretted doing so as she saw out the window that Alessandra turned to look their way. She didn’t mean to be so loud but she was frustrated with Hazel.

Shouldn’t her best friend know right away that she was upset because the man she liked was taken and now her friend was meeting with that woman?

"Have you forgotten that I once used to like Edgar and now you’re being friendly with his wife?" Linda asked, hoping Hazel would understand it now. It would be like her meeting with a woman Tobias once had a relationship with.

Hazel pinched her nose as she couldn’t believe this was why Linda was being mean to Alessandra. Linda was the one to say that she had moved on from Edgar. Tobias was close to Edgar so she was bound to be around Alessandra.

They were not back at the selection when they thought it would be good to have Linda marry Edgar and Hazel would be with Tobias. Linda needed to do as she said and move on.
