Chapter 246: Not ready (1)

Hazel thoroughly enjoyed her time with Alessandra and Linda. She was right that the two would get along well. They had more in common than just liking Edgar. She was saddened by the arrival of a maid who pointed out that it was time for dinner so Alessandra and Linda would now have to leave her.

If only they could spend the night here but she didn’t want to subject either one to see the true face of the palace.

Linda left the group first to return home in time to not worry Kenneth. She had stayed in the palace longer than she told her father so before he could have men out searching for her, she had to leave quickly.

Alessandra and Hazel stood to leave a little after Linda. Before they could make it out of the room there was a knock on and after being opened by a maid, it was revealed that Tobias and Edgar had come to see them.

Hazel went to Tobias while Alessandra went to Edgar’s side. With Edgar present, Hazel no longer needed to walk Alessandra to find him.

"Once again, if there’s anything you ever need from me don’t hesitate to send a message. We’re friends now. Please do not reject my help," Hazel offered.

For helping to put her in a better mood, Hazel wanted to do something in return for Alessandra. Since Alessandra was a bit shy and didn’t like someone doing something for her, Hazel would go to Edgar if needed to find out what Alessandra wanted.

To her surprise, Alessandra had something she needed help with but it didn’t concern her. Alessandra used her favour to get help for a dressmaker.

Hazel loved Alessandra even more for taking the queen’s offer to help someone else. Many would have taken this opportunity to get something for themselves. Bit by bit, Hazel was able to see why Edgar fell in love with Alessandra. "I will take care of it," she replied.

Hazel enjoyed watching the couple walk out the door with their guard and then it was just her left with Tobias and the maids cleaning up.

"My lovely wife-"

"Get out Tobias," Hazel said, moving before he could touch her. She heard it in his voice that he was coming to annoy her. "I had a good day and I will not have it ruined by whatever you are planning to do."

"You are all dismissed," Tobias ordered the maids. "Here I thought that my beautiful wife would want to spend time with me before dinner."

"I do enjoy it but not when I know you are planning something. The last time you came to me before dinner, we were late," Hazel said, remembering the rush to get her dress put on.

They were not in either of their bedrooms or private rooms so someone could have walked in at any second. Hazel swore that it would never happen again. This being the sixth time it happened would be the time that she did not allow it to happen again.

"Oh, don’t act like you didn’t enjoy it then. How was your time with the duchess? Is she suited for our beloved friend? Does she make a good friend for you?" Tobias asked.

"I like her. My opinion of whether she’s a good wife for Edgar doesn’t matter. I want to have her around more. You would not believe that I had a little disagreement with Linda. It was so childish," Hazel chuckled. It was funny now that she looked back on it.

Tobias was curious as it was a little unlike the two to argue. "What about?"

"I shouldn’t be telling you this. You mustn’t say a word," Hazel said, pointing her finger at Tobias.

Tobias looked at her finger. "Of course not. I’m terrified of the dangerous weapon you’re holding out to me."

"This is serious. We talked about her having feelings for Edgar still which led to her not giving Alessandra a warm welcome. You mustn’t tell Edgar because I don’t want him at odds with the Hensons. It is all resolved," Hazel said.

"That’s it? That’s all the two of you were arguing about? Your friendship is a little..."

"It is not boring. She was upset that I didn’t inform her that Alessandra would be here and I was honestly a little upset that she didn’tgive proper notice that she would not be at the ball. Our friendship felt a little weird lately," Hazel confessed.

"I might be a little too dependent on Linda which is why I would like to make more friends. She can’t always be in the palace with me as she needs to start her own family. It is strange. I haven’t seen much of her family here," Hazel realised.

Again, she had been seeing Linda’s brother occasionally but they were always in a rush to leave and didn’t properly explain why Linda was not visiting. Hazel didn’t understand why they just could not tell her that Linda was busy attending balls to find a husband.

"Is Grant still visiting the court?" Hazel asked as there was once a time she couldn’t go a day without seeing him. She felt bad for not sending letters to him.

Tobias tried not to let his annoyance show with Grant’s name coming up. "I am not roaming the palace all day to know who is here."

Hazel still picked up on Tobias being annoyed with what she asked. "It was only a question. You are more likely to see him than I would. Is there something that I need to know about? Did you make an order for the Hensons to go to the border but they refused?"

"Why would you think that? The fight at the border has settled down. There haven’t been many deaths so I do not need to send anyone there. Though, I am thinking of sending Edgar there to put an end to it once and for all," Tobias replied.

"I am not a fool, Tobias. I have noticed things happening here. I’ve overheard conversations about the women they are planning to have you choose from. Among that conversation was something funny. Talk about adding Linda to that list. It is ridiculous," Hazel muttered, thinking the court had reached a new low.

"Who did you hear that from?" Tobias questioned, heated that it was reaching Hazel’s ears.

"I didn’t see the face of the person who talked about it. You don’t need to go around looking for them. Linda is not yet married so they would consider her but I know you will never have her by your side. Even if it were to come to having another woman, you have no feelings for her. And she is my friend," Hazel said, knowing he wouldn’t betray her with Linda of all women.
