Chapter 277: Tricked (3)

Hazel couldn’t believe that Grant would have anything to do with this no matter how she tried to look at it. He was like a grandfather to her. She played in his home many times, slept there a few nights when Linda was there, and received plenty of gifts.

Her grandparents weren’t close by so Hazel had always felt like Grant and his wife filled that space at times. Grant had always treated her as he did with Linda.

Hazel couldn’t bring herself to believe it. "Grant? It is one thing to push Linda to share my husband but to prevent me from having a child is another. I looked at him as a grandfather for as long as I’ve known Linda. I played around in his house with her. How could he do this to me?"

’I am not Linda,’ Hazel thought. If someone in the Hensons wanted Linda on the throne, they could backstab Hazel because she wasn’t a true Henson. Just someone playing with Linda from time to time.

Tobias expected this response from Hazel. She was completely unaware of Grant’s motives. How greedy he was to have the throne. "It is what happens when someone desires the throne. It could still be anyone else or maybe I am wrong but I am going with my gut feeling to inspect this thoroughly. I don’t want you to see what I will do."

Tobias added, "So please stay here with Edgar until it is time for my ball."

Hazel had more questions she needed answered now. She knew that Tobias wouldn’t lie about Grant if nothing had happened. Tobias was frequented by Kenneth often so was it Kenneth who brought something about his father?

"I want to speak with Linda. She should be back in town with her brothers and father by now," said Hazel.

It concerned Hazel now that Linda and her family were always out of town for something. It wasn’t like them. She thought of Grant’s winter ball. How Linda was not there. Were the Hensons running from something or were they avoiding her?

Hazel’s trust in the Henson’s felt broken for a second but she had to speak to Linda first. "There is no way she couldn’t have known about her grandfather’s plot. At least to make her enter the palace. If you want me to stay here, promise me you’ll have her come to me. Immediately."

Hazel had to check that nothing about her friendship with Linda had changed. That this was all one big misunderstanding. It would have been better to accept if Tobias had given her the name of someone she wasn’t close to.

Hearing Grant’s name felt like someone had stabbed her and was twisting the knife around. Hazel needed to sit and fast. Terrible thoughts filled her head as she found it convenient how Linda was not around these days when talk of Tobias having another woman was coming around.

Hazel would never place Linda as a woman trying to get her husband but Hazel didn’t know what to think now. Rather than lean on someone’s family, Hazel needed her own around. "You must have my father return to Lockwood right away. I don’t care how much my sister will be against it. I need him here now."

"I will get both of them for you. Do not do anything reckless and remain in Edgar’s care. I will make the palace safe for you to return to. Please don’t tell me you are angry with me," Tobias said. He wanted to know that when he left, they were fine.

Hazel was only angry that it took so long for Tobias to tell her when they had been together for so many days. "I don’t like the fact you didn’t tell me about this before we got here. I would have understood you and you know that. I am not angry at you, I am just tired of what comes with sitting on the throne."

Hazel didn’t know what to think yet but she would support Tobias. "The moment you find out even the slightest evidence I might have been fed something please send for me. I want to see who was working for whom and why. Going up against Grant will not be easy so you better be safe or I will kill you with my bare hands."

If somehow Grant did have a part in all of this, Tobias was not safe. Fighting the man who had a big influence in the royal army would not end well. Especially if the other Hensons were on Grant’s side. That family normally stuck together.

Tobias hugged Hazel, enjoying the last moments since he had to leave now. "You act as if your husband has ever lost a battle. I will be fine. Grant underestimates me because he still views me as a boy. The duchess must be waiting for you." ƒreewebηoveℓ.com

While it was off to a rocky start, Tobias was more grateful that Alessandra walked into his friend’s life because she became special to Hazel as well. He trusted that the duchess would help Hazel.

Tobias opened the door for Hazel and kissed her goodbye. "I can’t stay as it is time wasted I could be carrying out my inspection. I will visit you soon."

Hazel leaned on him for a moment. She was going to spend every second concerned about his safety.

Tobias felt even more sorry for what she had to endure."I am sorry I have not protected you as well as I thought. It will not happen again."

Hazel wanted him to stop apologising since he had tried his best. "You have protected me well. It doesn’t help that there is an enemy at every corner. Don’t worry about me, Tobias. Return to the palace and get rid of as many enemies as you can. I don’t want to hold you any longer."

Hazel stepped away from Tobias and looked inside. Alessandra was waiting for her beside Edgar. Hazel didn’t say anything more as she left Tobias’s side. If something more was said between them, she might not be able to let him leave.

Hazel went to the duchess while Edgar walked to the door to speak with Tobias. She was happy that Tobias was leaving her with someone she could open up to instead of leaving her somewhere alone.

Hazel felt like crying as she neared Alessandra, but she tried not to cry now with Tobias at the door. She had been doing so well these days, but now her mind was back in a terrible space.

"It is good to see you again, Alessandra. I need to ask a favour of you. Please distract me. There is a lot about the palace on my mind but I don’t want to think about it as I might go insane. Please help me take my mind off my troubles," Hazel said, trying not to give in to the breakdown that was coming upon her.

Alessandra was determined to do all that she could to help Hazel. She would do her part to have Hazel forget about everything. "I will. You’ve arrived just in time for dinner to celebrate Edgar’s birthday so there will be a few guests to distract you. You might be interested in knowing I have reconnected with my grandmother from my mother’s side."

Hazel walked away from the door with Alessandra to hear more about what Alessandra had been up to.
