Chapter 278: The harsh truth (1)

Hazel felt at ease right away from listening to Alessandra speak about reconnecting with her grandmother she had never met. While Hazel might be close to losing a grandparent, though there was no blood relation, she was happy for Alessandra gaining one.

Not only did Alessandra now have a chance to become close to her grandmother, Hazel was surprised to see that Edgar’s grandmother was present. Rose Collins was a well-known woman who ran the social world in her time. She would help Alessandra do the same.

Alessandra had been hurt too much by the people around her and it was time that she got to be happy now. Seeing how Alessandra’s life had turned around, Hazel had hope that her life could do the same.

"Alessandra, where is my room so I can get out of this dress I travelled around in and prepare for dinner?" Hazel questioned, wanting to get dressed up like everyone else.

They were still to celebrate Edgar’s birthday so Hazel was going to put on her best dress and not ruin whatever Alessandra had planned for her husband.

Alessandra felt like a bad host for not sending Hazel to her room right away so she could rest after having to travel here. "Your room is on the second floor. I’ve picked out a maid to aid you in getting dressed and whatever you may need. I don’t know where she is now but oh, Sally!"

Alessandra decided to let Hazel have her maid for now. She trusted that Sally would help Hazel with whatever she needed. "Please take Hazel to her room and find Tiara to stay by her side."

Hazel smiled as the maid came forward and led her to the room like Alessandra instructed her to do. Hazel welcomed the maid because she did not want to be alone. She couldn’t just forget about what her husband was going to do no matter how much of a good distraction Alessandra was.

"You may relax your shoulders," Hazel said to Sally. Hazel could easily tell that the maid was nervous. It was how a few of her maids were when she first picked them. "Here in the duke’s home, I would like for everyone to be relaxed. I am just a guest."

"You are not just any guest, my queen. You are the queen of this kingdom and as the duchess’s maid, I must take good care of you. I must not let a repeat of fainting before your husband happen again," Sally said, still embarrassed by that moment.

Hazel tried not to laugh. She never thought there would be a day she learned of someone fainting because they saw Tobias. "I see. Do you enjoy caring for the duchess?" Hazel asked, trying to have small talk to distract herself.

"I do! The Duchess is good to work for. She takes care of all of us and she has a kind heart."

"I can feel how much you adore her. It is good that she has someone like you around. I should call upon one of my maids to come here. I won’t keep you from the duchess’s side for long. I only need to get changed to be dressed up like everyone else," Hazel said.

Hazel wanted to avoid spending too much time in a quiet room right now. Silence would push her to give in to her bad thoughts. She was to get changed and then meet Alessandra’s grandmother.

"The duchess has instructed me to care for you so I will do just that. Please tell me what you need me to do. Your things will be brought to the room shortly," said Sally.

Hazel stopped at the top of the stairs. "Then tell me, do I look underdressed for Edgar’s dinner?"

Sally couldn’t believe that Hazel would ask that. The queen looked beautiful right now. If this was a dress Hazel thought didn’t suit the occasion, Sally wanted to see what did. "You look ready for dinner. The duchess is only dressed up because her grandmother is here. It is a simple dinner."

"Then I do not need to go into the room yet," Hazel said, wanting to stop here. She feared what she might start to think if she was in a big room by herself. Unless she spoke to Sally, it would be like she was alone because the maids kept quiet.

Hazel looked down the stairs at Edgar speaking with his grandmother. She didn’t want to disturb him yet. Edgar and his grandmother didn’t look like they were having a pleasant conversation. Rather than go to her room, Hazel decided to sit on the stairs to wait for when the others would be ready to sit at the table.

"Q-Queen Hazel," Sally panicked, worried the duke might be upset she let his guest sit on the floor.

"It is fine. A queen sitting on the stairs will not be the end of the world. I trust that nothing I do will get out of Edgar’s home. You can sit beside me," Hazel said, patting the space beside her. "I prefer this to being in a big room."

Sally remained standing to be ready to help Hazel up when she no longer wanted to sit there.

There were a few minutes of Sally panicking and then came a sigh of relief when Hazel stood up, rushing to be out of sight from Alessandra who was coming up the stairs to speak with Edgar and others. Hazel didn’t want the two concerned about why she was seated there.

Hazel rushed with Sally hot on her heels, entering a random room to hide there. She was probably giving poor Sally such a fright.

Hazel waited out a few minutes and then opened the door to step out. Enough time had passed and it was time she met with the group again. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

Hazel walked down the stairs with Sally right behind her, but this didn’t last long when they made it to the bottom of the stairs because Sally parted from Hazel when she noticed a guard coming toward the front door and there was no one present to take the message.

Hazel continued to where the others had gathered without Sally. She didn’t make it far into the dining room as she was stopped by the sight of Alessandra and Edgar being cute. "You two, do not make me miss my husband. It would be nice if you think of the single people and the person separated from her husband."

Alessandra wanted to get away but Edgar kissed her hand. He was not going to stop his affection for anyone. "Then I am afraid you will have to find somewhere else to stay."

Hazel saw how Edgar and Tobias were so close now. They were both annoying. "Sometimes I forget that you can just be as annoying as Tobias."

While Edgar wanted to continue showing off his love for his wife, Alessandra thought of Hazel and tried to limit it.

Alessandra freed her hand from Edgar’s hold. "How on earth can you still be so touchy? I’m sure you can limit it a bit to not make Hazel miss Tobias. I would not enjoy seeing Tobias and Hazel in each other’s company while I am missing you,"

Edgar had a solution for her never feeling that way and said, "Then I will never leave your side."

Before Edgar could try kissing her again, Sally brought the message from the guard to Alessandra since it was her who had a visitor. Alessandra took the note and read it. "It is Eleanor. This is odd. Why the sudden visit? Tell them to let her inside."
