Chapter 279: The harsh truth (2)

Hazel sat down at the table with Edgar, Rose, and Alessandra’s grandmother Wilma. She noticed that there was some tension in the room. Some between Edgar and his grandmother then Rose and Wilma didn’t seem that interested in being near each other.

"I never thought the day would come when I am sitting at a table with the queen. Excuse me for being a little too nervous," Wilma said, gushing over how close Hazel was to her.

Hazel smiled as Wilma was just as cute as Alessandra. "I understand. I am getting used to the reactions. One day I hope you will join Alessandra with me at the palace."

"Really? I would love to do just that. I’m afraid my visit here is short because I must return to my husband, but I will come back and accept the offer,’ said Willma. Her husband would not believe her when she told him of this moment.

It was already a lot for Wilma to learn that her granddaughter had become the duchess and now it was to add that Alessandra was close to the queen.

"You must keep calm in the presence of the queen," Rose said, not moved by Hazel’s presence like others were. She was used to being near royalty so this much did not impress her. Alessandra should keep her relatives far away from the queen.

"Enough," Edgar spoke, tired of his grandmother. He needed Alessandra to return so he could enjoy this. He was quite close to sending his grandmother off since she didn’t know how to act.

Edgar was the first one to notice when Alessandra returned to the dining room. He noticed how panicked she was as though someone had just brought trouble. Edgar stood up from his seat as he needed to get to her side now.

"Edgar," Alessandra called to her husband. She found it hard to look in Hazel’s direction. She was afraid for herself and Hazel. They were both at risk because of what had been shared with her. "I-I need you to come with me right now."

Edgar reached Alessandra’s side and tried to comfort her. Free her from her distressed state. Whoever did this to her when she was happy not long ago would have hell to pay. "What’s wrong? Did Eleanor do something to you?"

Alessandra finally looked at Hazel who was worried. Everyone was. She tried to calm herself as no time should be wasted right now. Hazel had to know what was done to her. She had to tell Hazel and Edgar alone.

Alessandra tried to smile to calm his anger. She didn’t want to share what was said before her grandmother or Rose. "No. I need you and Hazel. To come with me for a moment." ƒгeewebnovёl.com

Hazel didn’t like the way Alessandra was acting. Especially from the fact that she had sent her husband off to the palace alone and Alessandra was behaving as though someone had died.

Hazel’s right hand shook as she imagined the worst about Tobias’s return to the palace. She was so concerned about her husband that she didn’t hear a word of what Rose said.

Hazel stood up from her seat to go to Alessandra. She needed answers right now before she just headed to the nearest carriage and had it take her to the palace to see her husband.

Edgar ignored his grandmother’s want for what Alessandra knew to be shared at the table. When Rose stood up to follow them, he said, "Do not follow us."

Edgar wasn’t all for family like his wife was. When they started to annoy him, he was all for throwing them out of his estate. Edgar waited for the three of them to be away from where the others could hear and asked, "What is wrong Alessandra?"

Hazel was close behind them. "I am also in need of an explanation."

The patience was bothering Hazel and she was quite close to being loud to get answers. It was not good to be acting like someone had died and be silent about the matter. Alessandra should be quick to tell them what had caused her to be this way.

Alessandra couldn’t bring herself to be the one to say it so she led the two to the front door for Eleanor to reveal it. She didn’t want to tell her husband that if there was a chance she was pregnant before, someone might have caused her to lose the baby. "Eleanor will explain it to the two of you."

Hazel was just as confused by Eleanor’s presence in the estate. What did Eleanor know that concerned all of them? "What is going on Eleanor? The two of you are starting to make me nervous. This has nothing to do with my husband right?"

Eleanor was just as nervous as Alessandra was to share the news with Hazel. It was a terrible position to be in to tell the queen that someone was stopping her from having a child.

Eleanor started, "Your Highness, do you remember when we were all in the palace and we were drinking tea before going back with the other young women? I drank your tea and there was something odd about it."

Eleanor had forgotten all about the tea and what the taste must have been until today. She visited the brothel that her father owned and when one of the women mentioned needing to drink something that would stop her from becoming pregnant, Eleanor figured it out.

She rushed here to tell Alessandra because she didn’t think she would be able to get inside the palace or feared that no one would believe her.

Eleanor continued, "Today I pieced together that there are herbs in there to prevent you from becoming pregnant. It is used in the red-"

Hazel took a step back as this news came to her. Her tea? "What? My tea had something in it?"

Eleanor nodded her head. She wasn’t mistaken since she was used to this. "Yes. I smelled something familiar and when I went to my father’s business I smelled it again when one of the ladies was drinking the herbs to rid her chances of having a child. I came as soon as I found out."

Eleanor knew that it was the same herb in Hazel’s tea. If there was a chance that she was wrong, Eleanor still wanted this known so it could be looked into.

Edgar turned to his wife, his blood boiling as he thought about why Eleanor needed to speak to Alessandra as well. "All of you drank the tea?"

He had left her in the palace and not only was she hit in the face, but someone might have tried ruining their chance to have a child.

Alessandra tried to think of there being something strange about the tea while Hazel was trying to take this all in. How could it have been the tea all along? She had been drinking tea many times during the day. It was only recently that she stopped as she grew tired of it.

"I did. I don’t remember if there was something strange with the taste," Alessandra said, but this wasn’t enough for Edgar’s anger.

Edgar tried not to let his anger get out of hand before the women as they were already worried about what was done to them. "Who? Who brought all of you the tea?"

"Julia served us tea but it was always inspected. I was always kind to her so she wouldn’t betray me. I helped her when she had nothing. It must be someone in the kitchen," Hazel said, not wanting to believe that another person close to her could do this to her.

Why would they do this to her when she had been so kind? Why was it being revealed to be everyone she cared for? What had she done to deserve them turning on her?

Hazel tried to reach for something to help her stand. There was a slight pain in her chest and she found it hard to breathe. In one day, she had to learn that two people she trusted were stabbing her in the back all along.

Right now, Hazel didn’t know who to trust. She tried to focus on remembering how to breathe. She could only watch on as Edgar gave orders for the men under his command to march to the palace.
