Chapter 281: The harsh truth (4)

Alessandra cared for Hazel who now rested her head on her lap. She didn’t know what to do other than to let Hazel get all of her feelings out. "Would you like me to send for Linda?"

"No," Hazel quickly replied. "I don’t want to see any of the Hensons now. What if they were all working together?"

Alessandra did not answer Hazel’s question because she didn’t want to start Hazel thinking about who else had betrayed her. Alessandra didn’t know the Hensons well like Hazel did so she was not going to think ill of them yet.

Though Grant was a bad man, Alessandra didn’t think all his family should not be trusted just yet. Alessandra never agreed with her father’s plans. She knew right from wrong. There was a good chance Linda would be against her grandfather.

Alessandra had witnessed how close Linda and Hazel were so she thought Hazel should speak with Linda first. If there was one Henson that Hazel might be able to trust, it would be Linda. If Linda had some role in all of this, Alessandra feared being in this town because too many people were good at pretending.

"I hope this doesn’t affect you having a child," Hazel said, wishing whatever Julia used did not affect Alessandra.

Alessandra was only given the tea because of their friendship. Hazel couldn’t think of any other reason why someone in the palace would serve Alessandra something to stop her from having a child. No one spoke of having Edgar end his marriage with Alessandra.

"Maybe it was only my tea she put it in. She had no reason to serve it to you. You can have a child," Hazel said, hopeful that this would be true.

"We will be mothers, Hazel. I am confident that it will happen now that you will have her out of your life. We shall have children who are everything like us and their fathers. Close as we are now. They will have each other to lean on as we have each other now. I see that future for you just as I see it for me," Alessandra said, wishing it would come true.

"I don’t mean to make this about me, but you know that I’ve been in a terrible place for many years. I felt like all hope was gone, but then an opportunity came, and now I have Edgar. Please do not give up, Hazel. The day for you to have your child will come. We will be fine," Alessandra said, believing that the tea would not ruin their chances this time.

As Hazel said, Alessandra knew there was a chance that there was nothing in the tea she drank and Hazel did not have any at that time. Alessandra believed that good news would come to them soon.

Hazel reached for Alessandra’s hand and held it. She was glad to not be alone now as she would have given in to her negative thoughts.

"I must be better. You and many others have gotten hurt because someone wants me off the throne. I lost everything because I was so trusting," Hazel said, no longer wanting to be the same person that she was before.

"Hazel, while I think that you should be more careful of those around you, I don’t want you to ever lose your kind heart. Please don’t close out everyone after this. I wouldn’t have had the chance to settle in as the duchess without your warm welcome to your side. Please do not change too much to the point you are no longer yourself," said Alessandra.

Alessandra knew what it was like to want to change, but in the end, she found that it wasn’t worth it. She feared Hazel falling into a place of slowly cutting everyone out of her life because she couldn’t trust them. Hazel needed the people who truly cared for her at her side now.

Hazel squeezed Alessandra’s hand. It was hard to stay nice when being that way made her lose what she wanted most. She couldn’t help thinking of how many more people she was close to that she would find out had a role in this. freēnovelkiss.com

Hazel closed her eyes, the tears continuing to fall making Alessandra’s dress wet. "Please send for my husband as soon as possible."

"I will," Alessandra responded. "Please rest, Hazel. You were too weak to stand. You need water. Please trust me that there is nothing in it. I can taste it before you."

Hazel shook her head, not ready to accept anything yet. She knew that the water was safe, but she could not stop thinking of how she thought Julia’s tea was fine. "I’m sorry. I just...I need a moment. I know you don’t want to bring any harm to me, but I just can’t do it right now."

"I understand," Alessandra answered. She would have to ease Hazel into drinking or eating at some point. She could wait until Hazel was ready or until Tobias returned. Tobias was the person Hazel needed to see now as they finally had an answer to what they had to bear with for years.

...

In the palace, Tobias cleaned his sword as a body was dragged out of the room. There was another body missing a head which was to be taken out.

Tobias had long made a list of who he needed to question. Already, he had killed one maid and two guards. He sent for the royal inspector to come to him as the next person to be questioned.

They could call him a mad king for all he cared. This was about protecting his wife. He’d kill those who were the slightest bit suspicious.

Tobias could hear the royal inspector questioning the guards for why they had taken him. After this man, he was going to call upon all the doctors in the palace. They had all offered their knowledge on how to help Hazel have a child and Tobias wouldn’t be surprised if one of them had given someone the idea for how to stop Hazel from having a child.

"My king!" The royal inspector cried out. He was terrified by all the blood and the king standing with a sword in his hands. He didn’t know why he was called here but he knew to beg for his life first and then find out later. "There must be a mistake."

"There was," Tobias agreed. "I should have killed all of you a long time ago. Are you careful when you look into my wife’s food? Do you do your job properly by standing in the kitchen to see what goes into the food? Have you always been there to inspect it?"

"I-I have," the inspector nervously answered. He didn’t allow food that he didn’t see be prepared before his eyes to go out to the queen.

Tobias pointed the now clean sword which was begging to be stained with blood at the inspector’s head. "How can I trust that you were doing your job right and made sure nothing to harm the queen got past you? Be honest if you have betrayed the crown and I might spare you. Give me a name."
