Chapter 282: Fall of enemies (1)

"What have you called me here for? Didn’t you get enough of harassing my family? My sons want nothing to do with you," Kenneth said, looking from the door at this father who stood by the window.

Kenneth didn’t like that Grant kept reaching out to his sons who had made it clear they wanted nothing to do with him. Linda was the only one willing to see Grant because she was unaware.

"You’ve gotten all in their heads with lies about me. I kept my problems with you and your wife but you wanted to involve my grandchildren. Does it feel good to have turned them against me?" Grant asked.

While Grant didn’t care about his ruined relationship with Kenneth, he did miss having his grandsons around. Then Linda’s visits had become few.

"You disrespected their mother. I didn’t have to get in their heads. What made you think they would like knowing that you want to put their sister on the throne? To go against Hazel who they all care for? Before there has to be a funeral, end this now," Kenneth advised Grant.

Kenneth didn’t know all of what Grant had done, but right now, it seemed like there was still a small chance for Grant to keep his head in place.

"There is no changing my plans. I thought you should know me better than that to not ask me to quit when I am so close," Grant replied, turning to face Kenneth. "I’ve brought you here as your last chance to be on my side. If you want to protect your family, I suggest that you join me."

Kenneth placed his hand on his sword. "Be careful with your threats, father. You might lose your tongue and your head. I’ve long grown tired of you and your ways. I will not hesitate to kill you if you try to harm my family. Your family," he reminded Grant.

"Family," Grant repeated the word which meant nothing to him now. The family were the people standing in his way. "I won’t hesitate to kill all of you if you stand in my way. Because I care for you, I am giving you one last chance. The only one I need alive among you is Linda. It would hurt her to lose her father. Her mother is someone she could do without."

Kenneth unsheathed his sword and made his way toward his father.

Grant responded by grabbing one of the swords he had displayed on a wall. If Kenneth had to die now, then so be it. With his mouthy son out of the way, his plans would go much better.

Grant pointed his sword at Kenneth. "When you were born, I expected good things from you. That you would be the one to follow my lead. You started so well by joining me out at war, but look at what you’ve become. That woman has made you soft."

Kenneth pointed his sword at Grant. The hesitation to kill his father was no longer present. His loyalty to the crown always came first, but now Grant was throwing in his children’s lives. He would rather kill his father than watch his children be harmed.

"You wouldn’t understand it since you don’t know how to love anyone. I am taking my mother with me," Kenneth said, no longer able to keep her near the hands of his father. frёeweɓηovel.coɱ

Grant smiled since it was a little too late for Kenneth to want to take his mother anywhere. "She’s not here. You’re not the only one who can send your loved one off to be safe. She doesn’t need to be near for the coming war."

"You are going to die and I am not going to try to save you," Kenneth said.

It could be by his hands, the king’s, or a random guard. Whatever fate had waiting for his father, Kenneth was not going to intervene. He had given Grant time and time again to end this.

Kenneth lowered his sword. While he would love to get it over with now, he was quite outnumbered. Even if he managed to kill his father, the chances of him getting by all of his father’s followers were risky. He made a promise to his wife that he would return home and he would, but Kenneth would be back.

He could not allow this game to continue any longer. Without speaking with Tobias, he would go ahead and start the fight today. Kenneth only needed to return to his home first and then give the order for his men to march out.

Kenneth backed away from Grant, not trusting that he could turn his back on his father. "This might be our last meeting. I hope you die knowing that your only child hated you."

Grant smiled, not caring what Kenneth thought about him. He wouldn’t have made it this far if he did.

....

At the same time in the palace, Tobias continued to question the royal inspector. His anger grew with the inspector not giving him an answer that he liked. Tobias didn’t believe that the man before him had been doing a good job of looking into what was placed in Hazel’s food.

Tobias raised his sword as the inspector had failed to prove that he was innocent. He could join the others in the afterlife.

"Your Highness!"

Tobias wanted to kill the person who came to disturb him. Anyone could easily be added to the list of people he was going to kill today. He said not to disturb him for a good reason. "I said no one is to disturb me. You have one task of bringing in everyone one by one. What is it?"

"Duke Collins is at the gates with an army of men requesting we give him one of the queen’s maids. The gates won’t open for him and the palace guards are preparing to fight if he does not leave-"

Tobias threw his sword to the floor, not waiting for the guard to finish speaking. Why was Edgar here instead of protecting his wife? It wasn’t that long ago that he had left Edgar’s estate. What had Edgar found out that he was calling for one of Hazel’s maids?

Tobias ran before war could break out at his gates. It was Grant that they were meant to be fighting. Not each other. He passed guards running with their weapons, ready to put up a fight against Edgar.

When Tobias reached the outside of the palace’s front doors, he was caught off guard by the number of men Edgar brought with him. It was confusing why Edgar had brought so many men for one of Hazel’s maids. One would think that this had something to do with Alessandra.

Tobias had heard men in the court and other nobles claim that Edgar had too large of an army for a mere duke, but he didn’t believe it. Now today, Tobias knew that Edgar had a bigger army than he had described. Had Edgar gathered every man in town for this?

Tobias made his way to the front of the palace guards. He was the only person whom Edgar might speak to without threatening them.

"Edgar!" Tobias yelled to get Edgar’s attention. "Open the gates for me,’ he instructed the guards. Edgar was not here to harm him. Tobias trusted his friend. "Why are you creating noise for me, Edgar? Not in the mood?"

Tobias walked out to Edgar who came close on a horse. He feared what he was about to hear since nothing he said could have gotten Edgar to want to fight unless it had to do with Grant. Edgar had made it clear that he was staying out of wars to be with his wife.

"Bring the maid named Julia. She is a suspect for putting something in the queen’s tea and perhaps, my wife’s."
