The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 285: Fall of enemies (4)
Chapter 285: Fall of enemies (4)
When Tobias started to make his way to Grant, what he did not expect to see when he got close was Kenneth leading a large group of men that way. Tobias hadn’t sent word to Kenneth yet so what had occurred for Kenneth to do this without telling him?
Tobias rode toward Kenneth who also rode his way so they could speak. Now was the time to learn if Kenneth was still on his side.
"You are not dressed for war," Kenneth noted. Why wasn’t the king clad in armour to protect himself? What were the men around him doing by letting the king be this way?
"War wasn’t on my plans today but it has come to this. Your father employed a maid to put something in Hazel’s tea to stop her from becoming a child. You know his fate," said Tobias, paying close attention to Kenneth’s reaction.
At this point, nothing that Grant did came as a surprise to Kenneth. Still, it hurt him to know that his father would have gone as far as to do this to Hazel. The only reason Hazel was around Grant so often in the past was because Kenneth took her along for visits when he watched her or she travelled with his wife.
Kenneth worried for Hazel since it would have come as the hardest blow to learn it was someone close to her.
Kenneth didn’t like the man that his father turned out to be. What Grant had done could not be forgiven and Kenneth would not dare ask that Tobias forgive him. Kenneth wouldn’t allow anyone who caused his wife to be without a baby and put her through what Hazel went through to stay alive.
"Are you still on my side?" Tobias questioned, his trust barely hanging on. He didn’t know how or why Kenneth was here so fast. News of what happened in the palace couldn’t have reached him so fast and Kenneth seemed genuinely surprised about Julia.
"I have never left your side. He threatened my family so I had to make a move. I sent word to the palace to inform you but seeing you here, you wouldn’t have gotten it. My sons and I will join you. I spoke to my father this morning and know that it is a waste of time to talk," Kenneth said, preferring they just attack.
Grant had already confirmed that he was not going to back down. Why speak when Grant should just die?
"He claims my mother is not there, but I would like for your men to not hurt her if she is there. Leave the servants untouched and only raise your swords to my father’s followers. I shall leave it to you to be the one to kill him," Kenneth said, knowing it was the right thing to do.
Kenneth continued, "I will send one of my men to have Linda visit Hazel. With your absence and the Wallaces not in town, she will need all her friends by her side."
Kenneth also wanted Linda with Hazel because he knew she would not take it well once she heard what her grandfather had done to her best friend. Linda needed Hazel just as Hazel needed Linda. He could only hope that the two could get by this together.
"Thank you. Hazel is on Edgar’s estate so Linda must go there. You know his home well so I leave it to you to make a way for us in. I’m sorry that you and your sons must witness the fall of Grant. I will reward you well for aiding me and let it be known that all of your family were not traitors. I will do what I can to protect you," Tobias promised.
Tobias knew that with what Grant did many would like to paint all the Hensons as traitors but he would not allow for it to spread. It took a lot of guts to go up against your father. Many couldn’t do what Kenneth did by admitting his father was wrong and offering his support to end his father.
For all that Kenneth did, especially in protecting Hazel, it would be a slap in the face to let his family be looked to as traitors.
"Thank you," Kenneth thanked Tobias. His only concern was his children being able to reside in town without being disturbed. Having fingers pointed at them along with taunts calling them traitors.
His children liked living in Lockwood so Kenneth didn’t want to take them from where they were comfortable. They should not need to hide around because of their grandfather.
"You don’t have the right attire to fight. Please stay where you can be protected and allow me to make my way in. This will be quick," Kenneth said, putting his helmet on.
It was good that he spoke to his father earlier and said what he needed to. Now no words needed to be exchanged.
Tobias rode back to Edgar to relay the message while Kenneth rode ahead to lead the way in.
"Is he still helping us?" Edgar asked.
"He is. He will force the way in for us. Kenneth knows this land better than we do," Tobias answered. "Grant pissed him off so he was coming here to kill him and stumbled upon us. He will leave his father for me to kill."
"So, we just ride slowly behind him and wait? I suppose my time for fun will come when I kill William," said Edgar. That plan had not changed.
"Do it in a way that you cannot be placed for his death. Do not take all of these men to William," Tobias advised Edgar. He wanted to focus on Grant alone and did not want the court to be distracted by finally getting Edgar for murder.
Edgar had no plans of letting William’s body be found nor was he going to take all of his men with him. He could kill William by himself. He never doubted that he could. Edgar had only been a little occupied with his marriage, dealing with annoying relatives, and looking for who was taking women.
A large part of what was taking up his time would end if William was the bastard he was searching for and he found the women who were still missing.
"Your silence scares me but I will trust that you won’t create a problem for me to clean up right now. We have our wives to get back to so don’t get hurt today, Edgar. I don’t want to have to face Alessandra with bad news. I’ve already got to face my wife," said Tobias.
At the back of his mind, Tobias was afraid of how Hazel was taking the news. She was already depressed before and could easily fall back into that state. The duchess needed to stay by her side.
