Chapter 303: Spark (1)

Hazel was not happy to see who had disturbed them. If only they had been quicker to leave their husband’s side then they would not have been spotted. At least they were closer to the room where they were to sit in whilst the men drank.

Emma was the one to interrupt Eleanor and seemed to know that she had come at the wrong time, but still pushed her way to the front.

Hazel might have her troubles but she was not out of the loop that Emma was hardly a friend of Alessandra and Eleanor. Then there was Alessandra’s half-sister who was being looked into as the one to harm Alessandra’s face and a friend of the sister named Grace.

Other young women were waiting to speak to Hazel, but it was these three that stuck out the most and not for a good reason.

Though Hazel wanted to hear what Eleanor had to say, she had to entertain the other women for now.

"I’m happy to see all of you made it to the ball. Excuse me. I need to socialise as Queen but we must continue this conversation later," Hazel said to Alessandra and Eleanor. She would have to be away from them but only for a moment. "Emma, how is planning your wedding going?"

Eleanor happily stayed near Alessandra while Hazel was ambushed by women who wanted to speak to her. Eleanor expected Alessandra to be surrounded as well since it was big news to see the duchess without her mask, but that didn’t happen.

Eleanor could only think that after all the comments made about the duchess’s face, they were embarrassed because the duchess was indeed a beautiful woman. It was obvious just from seeing one side of her face but the women here liked to ignore it.

Eleanor pitied Hazel who was trying to keep up with what the women asked her. "I can’t imagine having to force yourself to speak with so many young ladies at once. The queen’s court is no place for me. On the other hand, a bathroom is. I need to find one soon."

Alessandra didn’t know where one was and since Hazel was busy, she decided to join Eleanor. It was best that Elanor did not go alone as anything could happen even though they were in the palace. "I will come along with you. Reed?"

Seeing Reed try to sneak away, Alessandra thought it was even better that he would take Eleanor to the bathroom. He would know better where the bathrooms were and he would only have to watch over Eleanor.

When Reed came to her side, Alessandra said, "I am not going to ask why you were there. You should know your way around the palace. Can you please escort Eleanor to a bathroom and bring her back to where the women have to gather?"

Reed was against the idea. "Why can’t she go alone-"

Alessandra was not having his whining. "Because it is not safe and if you don’t accompany her, I will. We both know there is a certain duke who won’t like me going away from the crowd. Which is it?"

Alessandra hated to use her husband’s temper but she had to do it. "Even in the palace, it wouldn’t be safe for her to go to the bathroom alone. How about I go along with both of you-"

"No," Reed stopped her. Edgar would have his head if he let her leave the queen’s side. "Stay with the queen."

Alessandra knew not to leave Hazel’s side for any reason. She did not want to be backed into a corner or to feel a stone hitting her face again. "I didn’t intend to walk off into the dark alone or drift from the women. I know to be careful Reed."

"It is not you that we worry about. Come quickly," Reed said to Eleanor.

Eleanor wasn’t thrilled that Reed would be escorting her to the bathroom, but she had to use it so she had no choice. "Honestly, I would rather hold it now."

Eleanor didn’t know if the man who was asking for her hand in marriage was attending the ball so she might be able to make use of the tall man beside her if she were to be approached. Maybe the two men could distract each other.

Reed glanced at the woman walking in front of him. She had gotten quite dressed up for the ball and was gathering plenty of attention. While her mouth might be something to watch out for as she wasn’t short with comebacks, one could enjoy her beauty.

"Why are you so hellbent on avoiding me?" Reed questioned, his curiosity needing to be fed.

Eleanor turned to him as if he had said something wrong. "I am not avoiding you. I just don’t want to be near you."

"And here I was thinking that you are smart. What you spoke of is the same thing as I have accused you of doing. Are you avoiding me because you find yourself attracted to me?" Reed asked.

Eleanor almost stumbled because of his guess but Reed caught her to stop her from falling. "It is ridiculous that you would think I am attracted to you. All you do is annoy me. How can I be attracted to you?"

"You can be annoyed and still find me to be handsome. Is that not why your cheeks are turning red as I hold you?" Reed replied. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm

He didn’t need her to admit it as her reaction gave it away.

"You can be honest with me since no one is here. I find myself attracted to you as well," Reed revealed.

She had been loud, but she was entertaining and got his attention.

Eleanor stepped away from Reed as she believed that he was attracted to her for all the wrong reasons. One reason being because, like other men, he must think that she was part of her father’s business so she would give her body to him.

That was not going to happen.
