Chapter 304: Spark (2)

Eleanor had put up with enough men coming to her, thinking that she was also for sale. She wouldn’t have Reed making the same jokes as others did.

"The bathroom is here," Reed pointed to the door.

He was starting to get the feeling that there was a big misunderstanding on Eleanor’s part. What was so bad about them being attracted to each other? Was it possible that she truly did not find him to be handsome?

’Impossible,’ Reed shook his head. He didn’t know of many other guards who were getting proposed to instead of doing the proposing.

Reed concluded that Eleanor was just denying what she felt. They had been bickering like an old married couple when they saw each other, but it wasn’t like he disliked her. He only liked getting a reaction out of her.

Reed leaned on the wall as Eleanor did what she needed to inside the bathroom. He hoped that it wasn’t that Eleanor had this foolish thought that she was not pretty. She had been gathering a lot of attention since he saw her tonight.

He had noticed from the time he was to escort her home after the mess with Grant that she was pretty.

On the last night of the season, Reed could see Eleanor receiving a few proposals. Reed folded his arms, tapping his fingers as he thought about who she would end up picking.

Reed didn’t understand the rush to get married. His time had passed for him to have picked a wife but he chose to follow the duke instead. His mother wasn’t pleased with his decision and should she see that he was attending the ball, she might do her best to get him to pick someone.

As the person in charge of caring for Princess Sofia, Reed knew that his mother was somewhere at the ball so he had to be careful to avoid her.

Reed glanced to the right when he heard the sound of something clicking not far from where he stood. Someone was near but it shouldn’t be so since this part was off-limits to guests. It was why he brought Eleanor to this bathroom so she would not be disturbed.

Eleanor opened the door and looked at Reed who was looking around as if danger was lurking close by. She had only needed to loosen the string her aunt had tied tight in an attempt to pull in the dress more to show her off. "I am done so you may return to the duchess."

Eleanor did not want Reed to find himself in trouble with the duke because Reed had left Alessandra’s side to escort her to the bathroom. "Thank you for walking me here," Eleanor thanked him.

The way to the bathroom was lonely so being with him made her feel safe. Reed was many things in her mind but she could admit that she had been comfortable around him. He had escorted her home once by order of the duke and though the ride was full of them saying something about the other, she wasn’t worried then about being alone with him.

"I’m sorry. I didn’t hear you," said Reed.

Eleanor wasn’t falling for the trick and started to walk off to go back to the women but Reed stopped her by grabbing her arm. "You are to take me back to where the women are."

"I know that but first, I would like to know why you are avoiding me," Reed said, refusing to let her go when she wasn’t truthful in her answer.

"I don’t see why it matters. Do you ask everyone who sees you and looks away why they are avoiding you?" Eleanor replied. She had her reasons and they were perfectly good reasons she was sure. She wanted to avoid him because...

Eleanor was left at a wall she couldn’t go past. Why exactly was she avoiding him? Nothing between them was so serious for her to avoid him. Whatever he said to her, she had a comeback waiting for it.

"Everyone is not you, Eleanor. Do not play dumb like my brother. Tell me, why are you avoiding me?" Reed asked once more. The answer was clear as day to him and it should be to Eleanor.

Eleanor tried not to laugh at how he had thrown in an insult for his brother. "Let us start with your claim of being attracted to me," Eleanor changed the subject.

He only had this interest in her because he thought that she was easy. That was what it always was when it came to her and she was tired of it. Rather than lead her on only to reveal his horrible thoughts later, Reed should be honest now.

"I thought so," Eleanor said after he didn’t answer her. "Please let go of me so I can return to the duchess."

"Wait, your dress," Reed said, looking away from the button she missed. "Step inside the bathroom for a moment so I can help you. I don’t want to do something to you," he added as he hadn’t missed the panic. "I only want you not to return with that button open to show your skin."

Eleanor reached behind her for the only button that should be on the back of her dress but could not reach it. If she were to go back to be with all the ladies like this one of them would point it out and somehow turn it into a joke.

Eleanor opened the bathroom door and stepped inside a little for Reed to fix it for her right there.

Reed turned his attention to the button but he was still mindful of the noise he heard once more as someone passed by near them. He was quick with the button so there wouldn’t be any rumours of Eleanor being inside a bathroom with him.

Reed then held the door open for Eleanor when he was finished and closed it behind her. "I don’t know what you think of me but I meant it when I said that I am attracted to you. Both with your appearance and with what you speak."

Eleanor wasn’t expecting that he would answer her right now and he seemed to be honest. She was starting to doubt that as the duchess’s guard, he would toy with her. Was it possible that, unlike the others he did like her? She looked down at her shoes which were suddenly interesting. "Then I must admit that you are also handsome. There, I said it."

Reed smiled as she said it like she wanted to fight him. "That mouth you have. It’s been getting my attention from day one. Before someone tries to steal a kiss tonight, allow me to be the first."

Eleanor waited for Reed to kiss her since he had asked, but it seemed that he was waiting for her to accept. She didn’t think anything serious would come of this and with all the other women receiving proposals and being asked to dance, Eleanor believed this was as far as her night would go, so she made a bold move to kiss Reed right there in the quiet corner.
