Chapter 305: Something new (1)

Hazel quickly grew tired of having to answer the same questions about love and men from the women around her. It made her think she should have just prepared a speech in advance for the women looking to marry and another for those already married.

Now that she had addressed most of them, Hazel wanted to see Tobias so she could spend some time with him at the ball to celebrate his birthday.

Hazel exited the room early after Eleanor returned to search for her husband so she could ask him for a dance. Would it be so wrong of her to have a drink as well? freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

’No,’ Hazel shook her head, against the idea.

She had started to take what Eleanor sent to the palace to help her heal from what Julia did and she had already made the promise not to drink for a while.

The timing was terrible as all Hazel saw when she walked around were guests with glasses in their hands. At least the women around her were not drinking.

Hazel smiled when she caught sight of Tobias walking with Edgar and Reed. He was done socialising with the men so now she might have his full attention again.

The women caught up with the men and Hazel could only laugh as Tobias spoke of seeing someone stripping after having too much to drink. It was a sight that she did not want to see ever and was thankful that she was not around.

The group soon parted for the couples to be together.

"Are you enjoying your birthday so far?" Hazel questioned, hoping she had done well with planning.

"I am. It is like you said that I should enjoy the night with the friends who came to see me and the proposals happening tonight aren’t so bad. Watching those who cry from rejection will be a form of entertainment for me. The night would be much better if I could share a dance with my wife," Tobias said, offering his hand to Hazel.

"How could I ever turn down a dance from the king? Oh,’ Hazel said after seeing two people slowly approaching them. "I think the dance must wait for a moment. Your parents showed up."

Tobias’s smile fell as he heard about his parents. He didn’t need the two of them to show up tonight. They could stay to enjoy the night as long as they didn’t bring drama from what they spoke of days ago.

"Happy birthday son," Jeffrey spoke first to break the tension amongst the group, "You look lovely, Queen Hazel."

"Thank you," Hazel answered, but then there was an awkward feeling that she did not like that followed.

Before, she could at least put up with Jeffrey but now, it was just as uncomfortable to be near him as it was to be near Tabitha.

Jeffrey nudged Tabitha to share the greeting. Regardless of Tobias claiming that he wanted distance between them, this was still their son so they agreed to show up to wish him a happy birthday. They weren’t getting any younger so they should be around for moments like this.

After some thought, Jeffrey realised how wrong he was and how wrong Tabitha was. He could admit that after all her dislike for Hazel being the one picked, she might have enjoyed having Grant replace Hazel with Linda.

Jeffrey truly believed that Tabitha didn’t have a clue that Grant would go this far to want to bring war to the palace and place one of his grandsons as king if Tobias did not marry Linda. Tabitha wouldn’t have sat quietly and allowed someone to harm Tobias.

"Happy birthday. We’ve placed your gift with the others," said Tabitha.

"Thank you," Tobias replied, taking hold of Hazel’s hand as he was ready to go. He didn’t want Hazel to get a repeat of what he discussed with his parents.

"I didn’t have any intentions of hurting you, Hazel. We weren’t close to liking each other then and I will admit that I liked the thought of you seeing that you would have to compete with your friend. It wasn’t more than that," Tabitha explained herself.

Tabitha did not want the idea that she was a cruel woman to want Hazel to lose a child to stay. She wasn’t so cruel to anyone she disliked. She didn’t hate Hazel so much that she wanted her to lose a child. That child was to be her grandchild.

Tobias was tired of this repeated conversation and ready to dance with Hazel. "Excuse US as we want to join the next dance."

"Wait,’ Hazel stopped Tobias. She wanted to get this over with so didn’t have to deal with this awkwardness whenever Tobias’s parents were in the palace. "I shall believe that you didn’t know the full extent of his plans. I would have liked a warning Linda being considered then but like you said, we weren’t close."

Hazel never expected Tabitah to do any favours for her in the past. It would have been entertaining for Tabitha to see her crash and burn.

"While I don’t have it in me to get close to you now as I am tired of the arguing between us, I think that there is room for something to happen in the future. For Sofia’s sake, I hope we can attend gatherings like this. Her life as a princess is already difficult. We should not make it difficult by having her seeing us feud," said Hazel.

Hazel didn’t have any plans of ever being close to Tabitha like she was with her mother, but she had long grown tired of the arguing. It wasn’t a good position to be in to have Tobias at odds with his family over something that concerned her.

They could all be cordial when they had to be in the same room and maybe one day, Tobias might let them in again.

"Thank you. I would like that," said Tabitha, feeling guilty now as Hazel had time to consider her daughter.

Sofia’s visits had become fewer and fewer so Tabitha had to question herself for why her children did not want her near.

"Now, if you would please excuse us, I wish to dance with the birthday man," Hazel said, giving Tobias his wish to be away from his parents.

"You will dance?" Tabitha accidentally spoke her thoughts out loud.

"I shall. Is there any reason I cannot?" Hazel questioned.

Tabitha smiled as it wasn’t how it meant how it might have come off to Hazel. "If the queen wishes to dance, there isn’t anyone in the palace who can stop her. Please don’t mind us and go ahead."
