Chapter 306: Something new (2)

Hazel and Tobias walked to the centre of the room to join the other couples already positioned to dance as the next song would soon start.

It came as a surprise for those around them to see the royal couple getting ready to dance among them instead of sitting on the throne where they normally spent most of the ball.

Hazel noticed the couple’s hesitation and heard their questions about whether they were to leave to let the king and queen dance alone. "Please join us in dancing," she said to end the confusion.

Dancing with Tobias would be so much better if it was done with more couples enjoying their partner’s company around. Hazel enjoyed seeing old and new couples dancing the night away and wanted to be a part of it. It helped her to feel normal.

Tobias joined in reassuring the other couples that it was fine to stay. "Should any of you leave because I am here with my wife, I might feel offended."

"Must your way of telling them it is fine come off so scary? Now they don’t look relaxed," Hazel said, her efforts wasted because the couples felt forced to dance.

"Stop thinking of whether they want to dance and focus on me. I am the birthday boy. I am saddened that your attention is not only on me," Tobias said, pouting since it wasn’t fair.

"Do not act like a child, Tobias. I cannot stop my duties as a queen and my attention has only been on you all day," Hazel replied.

They might not have been by each other’s side all day but her mind had been on this ball, looking into every detail to make sure that it went well and she had put a lot of thought into his gift. Tobias could not imagine how much attention she had on him.

Their conversation was interrupted by the music playing. Each had to part for a moment to be where they needed to be so they wouldn’t mess up and crash into anyone beside them.

From the moment the music started, Hazel could not stop smiling. It had been so long since she got to enjoy dancing at a ball like this. She was certain that all eyes were on her and Tobias, watching to see how perfect they were or if one of them would make a mistake, but all Hazel could see was her husband before her.

Though it had been some time since Hazel danced, she had not forgotten any of the steps. Her body moved along with the music, not once missing a beat. Tobias was the same way as well and one might think that they regularly danced in private to prepare for this moment.

Despite there being a room full of gifts for him, Tobias already placed Hazel enjoying herself as the greatest gift of the night. She was finally being her old carefree self and slowly moving on from the trouble in the palace days ago.

The guests standing on the side could not keep their eyes off the couple. The growing gossip about the king and queen not getting along because there was yet to be an heir was a lie. They could all see that the royal couple was still in love with each other.

The music soon came to an end so the couples stopped to clap.

"I forgot how wonderful of a dancer my wife is. We should dance more often so I do not forget," Tobias said, wanting to do it again but he also wanted to be alone with Hazel. "Would you care to join me for a walk around the garden?"

"I would love to," Hazel accepted the offer.

Dancing was fun but a moment alone with Tobias sounded better. They had all night to dance until her shoes made her feet ache. Also, the couples around them needed a moment to get over the fact that they danced beside the king and queen.

Hazel and Tobias made their way to the palace garden to take a quick stroll.

"The garden came out nice in the short time we had to fix it. I was worried that your birthday would come with it looking like a mess. Shouldn’t we get a statue of you to match the one that is of me?" Hazel asked, looking in the distance at the statue Tobias gifted her.

"No. You have a love for gardens. I want there to be a statue of only you here for it to be remembered that this is your garden. There are plenty of statues or portraits of me around the kingdom. I was going to have one of me made to be placed in your room for the nights I could not visit you," Tobias said, only ending those plans now that they shared a room.

Hazel couldn’t be happier that he didn’t go through with placing a statue of himself in her room. "I prefer the real you. Do you remember when you allowed me to see the royal garden during the selection and let me have one of the flowers? I find myself going back to those times."

"Yes. The trouble I could have found myself for letting you go there. I do enjoy thinking of how we hid in the maze to be out of sight from the guards. Why don’t we get up to that kind of trouble these days? I miss it," Tobias said as there wasn’t anything more exciting than escaping the guards.

"I am not like you to enjoy being rebellious, Tobias. I have had enough of having the guards panic while they try to find us. We were so unaware of where we would go from there. For me to be planning your birthdays every day. I could see myself not believing it," Hazel chuckled.

Hazel stopped to take a seat on a bench they were about to pass. Tobias sat beside her to look onward at where the guests were enjoying themselves.

"You know-"

Hazel kissed Tobias’s cheek before he could ask for a kiss. "Happy birthday," she said once more.

"Are you planning to seduce me? I am in the mood for it," Tobias replied, needing twenty-three more kisses to be satisfied.

"I told you to wait. Your gift is coming once we have sent off the guests,’" Hazel answered.
