Chapter 89: Guidance (3)

Tabitha already planned to pay careful attention to Hazel now that she was set to become queen. With Tobias acting the way he did, Tabitha had to work to make sure Hazel didn’t start acting out too.

Hazel didn’t have the same right as Tobias to behave as she wanted. Tobias was born royalty while Hazel was marrying in. There wouldn’t be the same grace given to Hazel.

Tabitha didn’t like how Hazel’s words came off like she was pointing out how she was failing to control the court and her son. Hazel’s world would soon be flipped upside down and this confidence she had now would fade away. Tabitha would be here to help her and show her why they should have listened to her.

"You will walk with us to stand near the throne. You must be careful with everything that you do now because there will always be someone watching you. Someone looking to figure out who you are and someone looking to find a single flaw in you to ruin you. The palace isn’t somewhere you can do as you like even as queen," said Tabitha.

Hazel nodded her head, taking in everything the queen said which was the same as Tobias had told her. He had been quite honest with letting her know that the palace wasn’t as fun as the town liked to make it sound.

Those who claimed the palace was a wonderful place to be did not live in it or might have visited for one day.

Hazel wanted the queen’s help, but she was still going to listen to Tobias more in the future. Tobias said what he thought and didn’t try to sugarcoat anything to fool her about the truth. The queen, on the other hand, would give Hazel answers depending on tradition.

Hazel could only hope that there would be moments when she could speak to Tabitha as woman-to-woman so Tabitha could give her an honest answer of what to expect.

Tabitha looked on from Hazel to Helena who was quiet. This must have all shaken her up as it did everyone else. Helena was now staring at the floor instead of being engaged in the conversation. "When this all settles, I will introduce you to the man courting Helena. We still need your approval, Lady Renee."

"Oh yes," Renee said, remembering the queen helping Helena. "I look forward to meeting him."

Despite saying this, Renee planned to be the one to pick out potential men to become Helena’s husband. Helena was only here to avoid gossip and now she could return home.

Renee was in a difficult position because she wanted Helena to stay near Hazel, but at the same time, it seemed the two had yet to fix their relationship so keeping Helena might cause trouble for Hazel.

"Your Majesty, now that Hazel is engaged to the prince, does that mean she will have to live here forever from today or may we take her home to gather the rest of her things?" Renee asked.

Renee wanted to take Hazel home to have a serious talk with her. She didn’t trust getting a room here in the palace which she was not familiar with and then having someone listen in to their conversation.

"Well, yes she would have to live here from now. We must protect her and though I am certain you picked out the finest dresses for her in the past, the palace will have everything made for her so she can fit right in. If you wish to spend one day with her at home, I would allow it, but you must bring her back tomorrow," Tabitha said as Hazel now belonged to the palace.

Had Tobias waited for three more days to go by, Hazel would have been more informed about what her life living in the palace entailed.

"I would like to take her with us when we leave the palace. I will be taking Helena with me also," Renee added because Helena also needed a serious talk.

They had both received one when they came of age to marry but she needed to have one with them again. Helena needed one just as Hazel even though she wasn’t marrying the prince.

Renee had been thinking about it since the last time she was here that there was a side to Helena that she had failed to deal with over the years and it would not do well with her getting married.

They were both women now and soon turning wives so they couldn’t run to their parents for all their problems or think life would always go their way. There was a lot of maturing that needed to happen and quickly.

"I will prepare for some guards to escort you home and to watch over your home during the time that she is there. They will also escort her back to the palace alone. Will Helena be returning?" Tabitha asked as she wasn’t ready to let Helena go.

When Tabitha wasn’t busy, she enjoyed sitting with Helena. It made her impatient for the days she could sit with Sofia and talk about more grown things. It was easy for Tabitha to read Helena and see that she was being genuine when they spoke. Something rare in the palace.

"Surely Hazel would enjoy having her sister around," Tabitha said, placing the decision in Hazel’s hands.

"Whatever is best for Helena," Hazel answered, fine with what her mother would decide.

Hazel was trying to move on from fighting with Helena and Helena was trying to do the same. If they were to go back being at odds again, Hazel would simply ask that Helena leave the palace. Now wasn’t the time for Hazel to be arguing with her sister.

"I would like to stay a little longer mother," Helena spoke up for herself. Why would she want to leave when she was enjoying her time in the palace?

She was treated like a princess in the palace and though it was common back at home thanks to her parents’ wealth, Helena felt like a real princess here because of the setting.

Now was not the time to return home because one good man was courting her. The maid at her side had started to become quite talkative after receiving a jewel and started to point her in the direction of men who would have her frequenting the palace often.

Now that Hazel was going to become queen, Helena was bound to be part of the queen’s circle and as the queen’s sister, who would deny her coming into the palace?

Renee had already made up her mind to take Helena out of the palace. "I will think about it," she said, leaving her answer for when she was alone with the girls. She didn’t need the queen’s thoughts on what she should do with her daughter right now.

"I have taken quite a liking to your daughters. I hope you don’t try to shelter them and instead let me help them grow," said Tabitha. Renee would be a fool to not let Helena stay. "I will care for them."

’Says the woman who wanted to test my daughter,’ Renee thought. She wasn’t leaving her daughters being cared for by the queen.
