Chapter 90: Try harder (1)

Linda looked around to try spotting Hazel’s return and finding where her brothers had wandered off to. Something was amiss since her brothers had left, but before asking her father any questions, Linda was more interested in trying to find her friend.

She wanted to celebrate with Hazel right away. See the ring and rub it in the faces of the other women who were not so friendly with Hazel.

Linda wanted to show off that her best friend was now engaged to the prince, but she couldn’t do that with Hazel not being in the ballroom.

Linda tiptoed to look through the crowd at the person now arriving as a few heads had turned there. Her eyes widened as she saw that Edgar had arrived.

"Try to make it less obvious that you are fawning over the young Collins boy," Kenneth Henson, Linda’s father, said. He had been keeping close to Linda because of all the commotion in the ballroom.

Many were voicing their opinions of the proposal and Kenneth didn’t like their tone. Two of his sons had left his side to help protect the king and to watch over his wife who was speaking to a friend.

Linda looked away from Edgar, embarrassed that her father had caught her. "I wasn’t," Linda tried to deny it, but it was useless since her father knew her well. "I can look now that the selection is over. You will allow me to court him without my brothers getting in the way, will you? I must marry."

"You can marry when the time is right," Kenneth said, not wanting her to rush it.

Once again, Linda found being the only daughter to be insufferable because of how overprotective the men in her life were. They knew who she liked so all they had to do was stay to the side and leave her be.

Edgar came from a reputable family so there was nothing to worry about in Linda’s eyes. She would be well taken care of and protected. That was what her family cared about the most.

Where had her mother ventured off to not be here to help her at this time?

Linda looked around for her mother and found her nearby speaking to a woman they were all well acquainted with. freeωebnovēl.c૦m

’I should have known that father wouldn’t be here if mother had gone far away,’ Linda thought. It was now that Linda realised her brother Jack was sticking close to their mother. ’Again, overprotective.’

"I think that it is time Linda sets her sights elsewhere," Grant joined the conversation.

"Not you too grandfather,’ Linda whined over losing one of the last two people on her side. "You said you would help me."

’Father," said Kenneth. He wasn’t aware of such a discussion.

"Now now," Grant said, putting up his hand before Kenneth could overthink his conversation with Linda. "I was trying to make my granddaughter happy. Now that I see how long it is taking for her to gather the young Collins’s attention, I think it is time she moves on. That boy has no interest in marriage."

"That is only because he has not met the person who will make him think of marriage yet. If all of you would just give me a moment alone to speak with him, then maybe I can hold his attention and marry," Linda argued,

How was she to get Edgar to like her when she had such an overprotective family?

"You will not be left alone with any man," said Kenneth as he did not trust any around his daughter. "You will find a good man. I know the boy well and he will not marry. You do not need to be with such a complicated man who is angry at the world."

"There are better men around. I have always thought that you deserve the best," Grant said, testing the water for his plans. "Had you not been so in love with Edgar, you might have been the one receiving a proposal from the prince today. You should have been focused."

Linda laughed because it wouldn’t have been as easy as her grandfather made it sound. "If I didn’t have feelings for someone, I would not have been liked by the prince. He seemed to have always liked Hazel and I would have helped the two. Are you disappointed that I didn’t do well?"

Linda knew how every family wanted their daughters to become queen. She had been so caught up in getting out of the selection to court the man she wanted that she didn’t give it her all to make her family proud.

"Of course not," Kenneth replied as he was happy she was not going to become queen. He didn’t want her in the selection but his father had convinced him that they should not be rude by turning down the invitation. "You did your best."

"I’ve called you my little princess many times so I started to imagine you as queen," Grant said, trying to cheer Linda up. He wanted her to see what she could get if she listened to him, but at the same time, he didn’t want to hurt her.

She’ll hate him in the future for a moment, but then she’ll thank him.

Grant planned to be patient with Linda so she would be all for his plans and not hate him. He still cared for his granddaughter. Ruining Hazel was different.

’That friendship needs to end,’ Grant thought.

His plans would never work with Linda’s friendship still intact. He had to ruin it slowly to get Linda to listen. Then he needed to work on his stubborn son.

"Well, you used to call Hazel the same when she came to visit and now she is queen. You can enjoy it with her. When will they bring her back? Something must be wrong that they are yet to return. Do you think they are trying to get the selection to go on for three more days?" Linda asked, worried that Hazel might not be enjoying her moment.

"They will be back soon," Kenneth said to stop Linda from worrying, but he also found it strange that Hazel was not back yet. "Father, do you mind finding out from members of the court what is happening? If something is wrong, we should offer help to the Wallaces."

Grant wasn’t interested in helping, but he did want to speak with his allies. They must all be restless with the prince proposing today. It was something that none of them had anticipated and while his friends were fuming, Grant couldn’t help but laugh at how this was going.

He left Linda and Kenneth’s side to find someone from the court.

This proposal presented a chance for him to see how the court handled situations they didn’t like. What was it that the fools had done to have the queen and the Wallaces yet to return?

"Franklin," Grant said, interrupting a conversation held by a group of men from the court. "When can we expect the queen to return so we can celebrate?"

"Excuse me," Franklin said to his peers. "We should take it in private, Grant."

"Of course," Grant replied, following Franklin off to the side.

"An opportunity has come to us to ensure you won’t have to worry about her getting a male heir before your granddaughter. The doctor has been called for," Franklin spoke softly, informing Grant of their current plan. "We’re doing our part so it is time you start working on your part."
