Chapter 94: Celebrating (2)

Hazel squeezed Tobias’s hand before letting go of it. She didn’t see why they could not hold hands after they had just become engaged, but she would try learning all the palace rules quickly.

’How often have I seen the king holding the queen’s hand?’ Hazel wondered. She failed to recall the times that they did.

Even as they stood now there was some space between them.

Hazel looked away from them to her and Tobias, trying to measure the space that was between her and Tobias. There was hardly any space so Hazel stepped to the right.

Tobias looked at her as if she had offended him. "Don’t even think about it," he said, closing that space. "You don’t want anyone to think there is trouble in paradise with you being so quick to move away from me, do you?"

"I am just following what your parents are doing," Hazel said, speaking softly so the queen wouldn’t hear her.

"Don’t do that. Our marriage won’t be exciting," Tobias said. freёnovelkiss.com

"I can hear you and I am offended," Jeffrey said, glaring at Tobias. What did his son know of his marriage? His time with Tabitha was exciting when she wasn’t worrying about the same one claiming that his marriage wasn’t exciting.

"Step to the side here, Hazel. Some people can’t help eavesdropping on what we say," Tobias said, holding Hazel’s hand once more to take her away from his parents.

"I will be going home with my mother when this is over. She wishes to have one day with me at home and then I will return in the morning. The queen is allowing it," Hazel informed him before he could make any plans for them.

"I’m surprised my mother is allowing it. I don’t blame your mother for wanting to take you out of the palace. She should have requested a week. She could now and my father would grant it, but it’s best you come back here as soon as possible to avoid relatives and neighbours suddenly having a need to speak with you," said Tobias.

Many would try getting closer to Hazel now to use her as their way into the palace. Even the women in the selection who didn’t like Hazel would try to become her friend because they wanted to be in the future queen’s circle.

"I would enjoy a week, but I don’t want anyone to be worrying about my safety. The queen says I don’t have to bring any of my things, but there are some that I want to bring with me," Hazel said as they helped make her room feel like it belonged to her.

"Like your dirty books," Tobias said out of the blue.

"I do not have dirty books," Hazel whispered, looking around to see if there was anyone close enough to hear him.

"I hope that you do," Tobias said as they would help her be curious about a lot of things. "I have my fair share of books. Some with words. Some with paintings. I’d be happy to lend you a few so you don’t miss the ones you have at home."

"I don’t want any of your books. They might actually be dirty because of what you do-"

"Ha!" Tobias smiled, pointing a finger at Hazel because he caught her. "You do have dirty books. I’d bet my crown that not one of your tutors was so bold to tell you about a man pleasing himself. Not if they want to be fired by your mother. That’s the kind of talk they give you after you are married."

"Or maybe Linda’s brothers talk too much when they don’t think we’re around. Then there are maids to talk about what other maids say they caught men doing. It is not hard for the truth to come to some of us without needing to be informed by tutors," Hazel replied.

"You can’t fool me, Hazel. I know a dirty book reader when I see one. As your future husband, I won’t judge you. Should you ever come across a description that you cannot imagine, come to me for it to be demonstrated. Let’s say you are the-"

Hazel covered Tobias’s mouth with her hand but was then quick to remove it. "Please do not say something like that now when there are many eyes on us. You don’t know who has a talent for reading lips."

"Isn’t it something how it would become a scandal that I am making it known how much I want to help you with your desires? Should we just pack our things and run away from the palace so we could be as we want to be?" Tobias suggested.

"You know that we cannot. Perhaps like the storytellers in the market say in another life we will both be normal people and meet again to be free that time. Right now, we must be in the palace," said Hazel.

"Another life I hope that when I ask you for a dance you do not decline. Since you brought this up, I hope that you are prepared for me to find you in all your next lives and make you fall in love with me. You only have yourself to blame for putting this thought in my head," Tobias said, enjoying the look of horror on Hazel’s face.

"Sometimes it is best that I keep my mouth shut," Hazel muttered. If having other lives were true like the storytellers claimed, now she had to be seeing Tobias in her other lives.

"We can’t have that. I like seeing those pretty lips of yours moving. I want to kiss you more than ever today because they are claiming we did so much and all I did was kiss your hand. Do you see now how many of those stories you heard about me might be false?" Tobias asked.

"Might be," Hazel said, not believing that all were made up based on this. "I am aware of how easy it is for stories to be made and twisted around but don’t think for a second that you could fool me about some of your days of being a flirt. You are lucky that it doesn’t matter to me as long as your old women don’t think I need to have a conversation with them."

"You were the one to promise that none of them would be in the palace," Hazel added, reminding him of what he said.

"Perhaps it best that I keep my mouth shut sometimes," Tobias said as he had forgotten about that conversation with Hazel.
