Chapter 95: Left in the dark (1)

"We’ve stood up here long enough. Hazel, it’s time to take a walk around to speak with the guests and let them celebrate your engagement to the prince. It will be over soon and we’ll make our way around the ballroom to come back here," Tabitha said, interrupting the conversation between Tobias and Hazel.

"We’ll go together," Tobias said, reaching for Hazel’s hand without thinking, but he stopped himself as Hazel moved her hand.

Tabitha looked at Hazel, pleased with her listening unlike her son. "Put some space between you. You are not yet married. Jeffrey," Tabitha said, letting her husband know that she was ready.

"What is it with not getting to hold hands? Are we not to show affection?" Hazel asked Tobias.

"Many in the palace like to act like prudes, but the most scandalous affairs happen here. I’m starting to believe that some think holding hands will lead to a woman ending up pregnant," Tobias said as it was taken too seriously. "Maybe it is the start of courting they don’t think should happen."

"But we are now engaged," Hazel said, thinking that wasn’t the answer. "I look forward to finding out why some things cannot be done in the palace. I fear that I will be facing some rules that I may never understand."

Hazel walked behind the king and queen with Tobias by her side. Something she would need to get used to.

"Don’t fall for their lies," Tobias whispered to Hazel. She was smart, but the lies would get harder to point out now.

"It would be best that later you give me a list of people you like to avoid so I can be prepared to speak with them. I need your help as much as I will need the queen’s help. Continue to be honest with me and don’t leave me in the dark. I won’t stay strong if you don’t help me," Hazel said as so far she could only lean on Tobias.

"As long as you tell me of your troubles with anyone. I don’t care if it concerns you and other women. I’ll stoop low to kill them," Tobias replied.

Hazel took it as a joke and said, "Certainly."

"King Jeffrey," Franklin said, placing his right hand on his chest as he leaned forward slightly. "The court is celebrating the prince’s engagement to Lady Hazel, but-"

"Not buts. This is a joyous day and there is no time to spare for whatever is on the court’s minds. You should be ready to greet my son’s future wife and not add problems. Don’t," Jeffrey warmed, hardly in the mood for any more games. Not from Tobias and certainly not from the court. "Continue to celebrate."

"Of course," Franklin replied. He could wait until all the celebrating was over to bring up his and the court’s issues to the king. "I will write for a writer to visit the palace. The town should know the good news from tomorrow morning and then we’ll move fast to spread it around the kingdom. Congratulations, Lady Hazel." ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com

"Thank you," Hazel said, feeling awkward because of some tension between the man before her and Jeffrey.

"Since when do you speak for the court? When did your job change?" Tobias asked, puzzled by how much Franklin spoke these days. Franklin wasn’t of any importance in the court so why was he talking a lot? Who filled his head with ideas that he was in the position to speak for anyone?

Tobias ignored his mother’s gaze warning him to be quiet. He had to ask to start putting together the answer for what these men were up to.

"Ha. Well, the sudden engagement made a few people angry so as one of the few calm ones, I am speaking for my peers. Should you have time to visit the court now that you are not in the selection anymore, you will see what my job is. I look forward to serving you," Franklin answered.

"Right," Tobias said, not interested in going to the court just to see what Franklin did. He had other plans for going there unannounced. "Moving on," he said, leading Hazel away from Franklin and the men behind them. "Stay away from that man. He’s always looking to climb his way up and act like he’s in a higher position than he is."

"I will remember that. Is there anyone from the court you like or are they all bad?" Hazel asked.

"There are a few that I like because they fight for the good of the kingdom and there are some that I can stomach if they don’t talk too much. They will start coming to you soon to introduce themselves. All might not come and wait for you to go to them. Many in the court act as if they have become royalty because of how long they have been here," Tobias explained.

"If you could, I assume that you would get rid of everyone not in the court to help the kingdom. You want heads to roll if I remember correctly," Hazel said, remembering a conversation they had where she saw a different side of Tobias. "I want to enjoy my engagement."

"I don’t plan on ruining today," said Tobias.

"You look annoyed so I can’t be happy whilst knowing something is bothering you. I am going to do everything I can to forget that today I was asked to take some tests whenever I look back on this day. You should also try to enjoy today and not think about the people upset by your decision," Hazel advised Tobias.

He had started so happy when he proposed and though he smiled when they spoke, Tobias went back to looking annoyed.

"I am happy, Hazel. I am just keeping a watchful eye over the people around us. Here," Tobias said, going toward Edgar. "When were you going to come to congratulate us, Edgar?"

"I was planning on coming to let Hazel know that I feel sorry for her," said Edgar as she married an idiot. Still, with her around Tobias’s visits to him should decrease.

"Don’t mind him, Hazel. He’s just grumpy that he has to share his best friend with you. No need to worry. I’ll be coming to your estate as much as I can and I will send you a lot of invites. I got something special for you planned as soon as I become king," Tobias said, trying to touch Edgar’s arm but his hand was swatted away.

Edgar looked to Hazel for help. "Keep him far away from me. Congratulations on your engagement."

Out of all the women, he was satisfied with Tobias picking Hazel. There wasn’t anything Edgar could find wrong about Hazel or her family.

"If I am not around and you see Edgar, go to his side to be safe. He will protect you in my place and point out the people you should avoid. You arrived just in time to see someone die," Tobias said, looking around the ballroom.

"And here I thought I was coming to something boring," Edgar said, ready to be entertained by Tobias fighting. "Who?"

"A few bastards in the court," Tobias answered. "Care to join me?"

"I do not want to be around the two of you plotting murders. If you don’t mind, I want to go over to Linda and the Hensons to speak. They are like family to me," Hazel said, looking at Linda who was pleading with her eyes for them to come to her.

"We can go for a quick talk as long as her brothers aren’t nearby. Excuse us," Tobias said to Edgar.
