Chapter 97: Left in the dark (3)

Kenneth led Tobias and Hazel off to the side to talk.

"You need to start being more involved in the court. They are the ones who will be targeting Hazel and from what I heard, some cases will need your attention. Those against you becoming king are banning together and since it is hard to reach you, they will go after Hazel," Kenneth said.

"I can give you some guards that are quite loyal to me and the royals to watch over Hazel, and if you would allow it, I would like to put some men that work with me to be in the court as spies. You need to pay careful attention to Hazel. Strange things are starting to happen in this town to young ladies," Kenneth said, taking a quick look around the room. "I do not trust Franklin."

Kenneth had watched them stop to speak to Franklin. He had also seen the man starting to come around his father. Kenneth was planning to speak to Grant about avoiding men like Franklin and whatever they wanted.

"I don’t trust him either. He’s starting to speak like he has someone big behind him and he’s suddenly important in the court. I will help you send in a spy. I need someone I can trust to inspect what those bastards are doing. I want to get some of them out of the court one by one," Tobias said, sharing his plan with Kenneth because he knew he could trust him.

"That will be hard but it must be done somehow. You can become a spy by being more involved in going to the court to listen to the cases they are taking. My father is friendly with most of the men so I will get some of what is being said from him," Kenneth said, turning his attention back to the young couple.

"Why didn’t we stay to speak around Grant?" Hazel asked, confused as to why this was a secret conversation. This wasn’t something that Grant could not hear.

"I know that neither of you want to hear more about my father speaking of your roles in marriage and these days, my father is trying to see the good of men in the court. Trying to work with them and some things are better off being a secret," Kenneth replied.

"Sounds like you don’t trust your father hanging around the court. Afraid they’ll change the man he is? They are always looking for allies to help support them," Tobias said, a little wary about Grant. It might be that he was still annoyed when Grant spoke about others’ marriages.

"My father is loyal to your family. I am not worried about anyone changing him. I worry about him taking it upon himself to try fixing the problems in this palace. I do not want him to get involved in any fights. His time has passed and I am lucky he did not fall in war. He is a man you can trust, but please, come to me or my sons instead of my father," Kenneth said.

Kenneth was in the middle of trying to convince his father to stay away from the court and the palace altogether. Grant had taken care of himself so he was able to move around a lot leading others to forget about his age.

"We will call you for help. We’ll respect your wish," said Hazel.

"Thank you. There will be a court meeting soon, one that your father is invited to and you must attend to start taking control of the court now. Start showing them that you will be the future king and stop leaving the palace so often-"

"Are you stalking me?" Tobias interrupted Kenneth to ask.

"When you go missing, whose family do you think they call to hunt your ass down?" Kenneth asked.

"Well, then you are terrible at the job because I am never caught. Don’t frown, Kenneth. I see that you all think I leave the palace just to play. I always go to Edgar’s home," Tobias revealed.

Kenneth didn’t see how that didn’t mean that the prince wasn’t leaving his duties to play around with Edgar. "Was that supposed to make me see you in a different light?"

"You continue to underestimate me and you’ve sadly underestimated Edgar. He is quite skilled at getting any information I need and helping me take care of private matters. Though I have fun at his home, it is a place where I can work in peace without having one of these sly foxes interrupting me so I would appreciate it if you continue to not know how to find me," Tobias said.

"Remember well, Kenneth. I am not a fool. It’s just easier to kill someone when they think I am the harmless foolish prince," Tobias said, fixing his shirt where Kenneth had grabbed him earlier. "Oh, Hazel. My mother is staring at you like she wants you to come over to speak with those women."

Hazel looked away from Tobias to the queen who was surprisingly close by. "Excuse me," she said, going to the queen’s side.

Kenneth waited for Hazel to be gone to say, "My sons did speak of how ruthless you were at war. You surprised them and my sons are rarely surprised. I look forward to seeing more of this personality you keep hidden. We’re all in for a surprise with you as king."

"I can’t tell you if you think that’s good or bad. I hope there’s never a time that I feel like your loyalty to my family has changed. Among the Henson men, I like you the most and I would hate to have that army of yours have to search for someone new to give them orders," Tobias said, smiling at the end.

Kenneth joined Tobias in smiling, but then he started to laugh. "It’s been some time since I was threatened. You have nothing to worry about, Prince Tobias. As long as you don’t abuse your new power, I have no reason to want to take you off the throne."

Kenneth meant what he swore to the royals many years ago. He was going to protect them and the land. Tobias was the future king so as he protected Jeffrey, he was going to protect Tobias until it was time for him to put down his sword.

"Please protect her. I do not want to see Hazel become like," Kenneth stopped as he was getting ahead of himself. Tobias wouldn’t know much of what his mother endured.

"Like my mother? I’m the first person to not want that. With your family on my side, I have one more ally to help keep her safe. Is that all you wanted to speak to me about?" Tobias asked as it felt like Kenneth had a lot more to say.

"There is, but now may not be the time with so much attention on you. My father looks annoyed for being left in the dark. I will come to the palace and inform you of the coming dangers. I might join in helping you get rid of Franklin and men who do not deserve their seats in the court. I hope you become a king that I will be proud to follow," Kenneth said, wishing the best for Tobias.
