The Lycan king-Chapter 104
*Leonora*
Jax lightly moved me off him and he got up. He began pacing as he listened to whoever was on the other line. I wondered what it was that was making Jax panic this much. He pinched the bridge of his nose, a telling sign that he was feeling overwhelmed.
"Call everyone involved to the conference room. There is no way you can misplace a full grown human being?! And why didn’t you say anything sooner!" Jax screamed on the phone. I quickly put on my jacket, buttoning it as quickly as I could. I stood up and walked up to Jax who was still pacing. He put his phone into his pocket and stood in front of me.
"Baby," I called as I held his cheeks. ""You promised that it’s going to be us against everyone this time. So don’t shut me out. What’s going on?"
Jax sighed as his body relaxed. "Luke escaped during our wedding." I felt tensed. Memories came flooding back into my mind. Memories I had tried so hard to move on from. Jax immediately wrapped his arms around me as a way to comfort me. "I’m so sorry. I’m going to protect you and our baby. Nothing is going to happen. You don’t need to be worried at all."
"I’m worried about you." I said as I held him tighter. "Luke had a serious vendetta against you and I don’t know what he might be planning now. If there’s anything we can do to stop him, we should do it quickly. I don’t want anything to happen to either one of us or our baby."
"I promise nothing will happen to us and our baby." He said as he kissed my head. "I will fight tooth and nail to protect you." Jax assured me and I smiled. Right now, it felt like everything we had been through led us up to this point. It made us stronger for each other. I wanted to protect him as much as he wanted to protect me. "I love you, Leo. I’m not saying it for you to say it back. I’m saying it because I want you to know. Once we go back down and get the full details, things are going to change a lot for us. Especially you and Bethany."
I looked up at him puzzled. "what do you mean?"
"There are going to be strict security protocols that you both would have to follow. I might even move Bethany to the room next to ours so that you both wouldn’t be too far away from each other." He said and I nodded. It was too harsh. "Even if it gets too strict, just know that I’m doing it out of love. I love you so much and I’m going to do whatever to protect you."
"How am I going to protect you baby?" I asked and he just smiled and kissed my forehead.
"You can protect me by staying inside and being a babygirl for me." He joked and I giggled. "We have to go now. Don’t worry, we will still have little dates like this."
Jax took my hand and we matched our way over to the conference room. The council members were already seated alongside Claire while the guards were standing around.
They all bowed as we both took our seats. It felt weird but I would have to get used to it eventually.
"So explain to me how one man could escape a dungeon?" Jax asked in his coolest tone ever. I wondered how he was able to keep calm in a situation like this because I was tense and I was ready to explode. I tried not to dwell on my own emotions and just focused on everyone else’s because if I did, I would have to explain why and Jax had already lied to protect me from the council.
"We think he had help from someone. The guards on duty were all drugged." One man spoke and I heard Jax scoff beside me. I quickly held his hand and his body relaxed. I didn’t want Jax to be so ruthless. I understood that it was necessary for him to be wicked but I still understood that there needed to be a balance. I knew I would have to use my mate bond to balance it out for him.
"When you’re talking to me, talk with hard facts. What happened that night and why didn’t you report it immediately?" Jax voice thundered and I could feel anger. Heavy anger. It felt suffocating. It reminded me why I didn’t want to use my mate bond. Jax’s feelings were heavy. Too heavy. I wondered how he was able to carry it on his own.
"We reported it to Claire the moment we go some information." The man confessed. Jax turned to Claire and I could feel something different. It wasn’t anger. It also wasn’t a good feeling.
"Why didn’t you tell me?" He asked her and she adjusted in her seat. I could tell she was uncomfortable with Jax’s death glare.
""I saw you and Leonora leaving during the party. I thought you both should enjoy your time to yourselves." She said. "I also sent out men to search and catch Luke but it was fruitless. Maybe if you both had been-"
"Do not shift the blame." Jax immediately shouted. "Claire, you have been trained to handle things when i am away so how could something as little as this seem so hard for you." Jax said and she bowed her head. There was something that bothered me about Claire. I didn’t know what it was but I knew something was off. Claire was the type to run to Jax for everything but lately she had been keeping to herself. I didn’t want to think evil of her but she wasn’t giving me a reason not to.
"I’m so sorry but I did everything by the book. Luke is smart and I really think he had inside help."
