Chapter 193: Homemade Compressed Biscuits ( 1 )

When Yao Zhi arrived in the wasteland, the workers were already busy digging the well.

Although Yang Dalang was the manager, it was impossible for him to supervise the process of digging another well and the ponds at the same time. So, the matter of supervising the work process was handed to his brothers.

Yang Erlang was supervising another well-digging, while Yang Sanlang supervised the pond-digging and the building of the bamboo water pipe.

Seeing her coming riding her donkey, Yang Dalang walked over and greeted her. "Sister Yao, you are here."

Yao Zhi nodded and climbed down from her donkey. Afterwards, she opened her pouch and took out a piece of paper. She handed it to him and said, "Brother Dalang, this is the map I drew. The fertilizer was sent to my home yesterday, and I plan to fertilize my land as soon as possible."

Yang Dalang opened the map and looked at the colorful areas. "Sister Yao, this..."

"The soil condition in each area is different, so the mixing of the fertilizer is also different. I have marked the sacks with color. You only need to follow the color on the map and use the fertilizer with the same color."

"As for the method on how to fertilize the land, I wrote the details below the map. If there is anything you don’t understand, just ask me," Yao Zhi explained.

Hearing this, Yang Dalang nodded and said, "We might need to hire more people if you want to fertilize the land as soon as possible."

Yao Zhi had already thought about this matter and said, "Money is not a problem. If possible, I want this project to be completed at the end of the month so I can start planting the land."

When he heard this, Yang Dalang frowned. After hesitating for a while, he said, "Sister Yao, you want to plant your land in the 12th month?"

Yao Zhi nodded and replied, "Although it’s a little bit late, we can still plant winter wheat."

Yang Dalang was stunned by her words. "Winter wheat?"

"I bought the seeds from a Western merchant. He said that this type of seed can be planted in autumn and harvested in late spring."

Although he didn’t fully believe that there was a crop that could survive winter, he said nothing. Since she had made up her mind, as her worker, he only needed to do his job well.

"I understand. I will hire more people, and we can start fertilizing the land the day after tomorrow at the latest."

"Good. I will leave this matter to you, Brother Dalang. If you have used up the money I gave you, just get more from me," Yao Zhi said with a smile.

"Okay."

After the brief conversation, Yao Zhi left the wasteland and returned home. With a manager helping her supervise the workers, she had more free time at hand.

Therefore, after she returned home, she went to the kitchen. Thinking about her husband, who had to go to battle so often, she wanted to make something that was easy for him to carry and could fill his stomach.

While marrow cake could be stored for a long time, it would become harder the longer it was stored. She thought for a moment and opened the system’s shop.

Yao Zhi bought 1 bag of flour, 800 grams of sugar, 200 grams of salt, 100 grams of baking powder, and 1 can of refined vegetable shortening, costing her 47 points.

After she bought the ingredients, she got some firewood and went to the back area. Today, she would try out the oven and bake some compressed biscuits.

Since her ovens needed to be preheated, she lit the firewood and put it inside the ovens.

While the ovens were getting heated, she thoroughly mixed the flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Then, she rubbed the refined vegetable shortening into the flour until the mixture turned into a sandy texture.

Afterward, she gradually added water to the mixture until it was slightly crumbly but held together when pressed. When the mixture was ready, she took out a tray, filled it with the mixture, and rolled it until it had a uniform thickness of 1.5 centimeters.

Yao Zhi then placed another tray on top of the mixture. She put the tray on the ground, then used her body weight to press the mixture to remove air pockets. She pressed for around 10 minutes before she cut the dough into square blocks with a size of 6 × 6 centimeters.

When she finished cutting all the dough, she used a small, sharp stick to poke holes in the biscuits. She poked 10 holes through each biscuit to make them dry better later.

It was almost two hours later when the biscuits were ready. She went to check the ovens and tested the heat. She moved the embers to the side and put the trays inside. She baked the biscuits for 75 minutes until they were fully cooked but not turning brown.

Seventy-five minutes later, Yao Zhi opened the ovens and checked the biscuits. Now that the first step was finished, she opened the door for a while to lower the temperature. When the temperature was roughly around 105 degrees Celsius, she let the biscuits dry for 3 hours.

When the time was up, she went to check the biscuits. The biscuits were dried, but to make them have a longer shelf life, she let the door open slightly and left them overnight.

Yao Zhi spent her day busy baking biscuits, and the aroma was carried by the wind and spread to the surrounding area. When Wang Wuniang smelled the fragrance, she couldn’t stop her curiosity and went to check.

Standing at the fence, she saw the smoke in Yao Zhi’s backyard. Seeing this, she knew that she was making something good again. Although she was jealous of her good life, she was not so unreasonable as to find fault with her.
