Chapter 74: A Little Bit of Sin

Saige frowned softly as he performed his magic scan, the results not coming out at all how he expected. The light of his hands dimmed for a moment, before flaring to life once more. They glowed even brighter this time as his eyes turned pure white and the hint of a pure aura radiated from his body.

But once again he came up with nothing. Again and again he checked it, his ears pressing against his head whilst his tail bristled with annoyance.

After the second attempt Lilith had stepped forwards, whispering some calming words to him as she could see the irritation start to grow on his adorable face. Belladonna, on the other hand, simply tossed the heart in her hand to the side and looked over the corpse curiously.

She didn’t know exactly what it was that her brother was looking for, only that it involved some kind of corruption of the local animals. All she could think about when she looked at the boar was how it would taste.

Her mouth was already starting to water just looking at it, as she imagined drinking its blood until it was completely dry. But that wasn’t even enough. She wanted to strip it of every pound of flesh on its body and suck down every morsel of meat.

She wasn’t even sure if she could wait until it was properly cooked, but that didn’t matter. She drank blood, what was the harm in a little raw meat?

Oh, and she couldn’t forget about the bone marrow and the organs. Oh how could she ever think to pass up those too. She needed to eat it all. Every last bite. But even as she was licking her lips, dreaming of devouring the massive boar that was bigger than herself, Belladonna found herself looking towards her brother with the same hunger.

She had drank the blood of players before, even if it was just once, and it hadn’t awakened her blood frenzy. So that would mean it was okay for her to do it even more. Besides, it would be good to see what bonuses she got from him.

How would it taste? What about Lilith? Would she be spicy?

Belladonna’s stomach rumbled, aching to be filled with all of the delectable food standing before her, as she slowly stalked forwards. Her eyes locked on the easiest morsel, her tiny and adorable brother.

Her natural predator instincts flared up as she stalked the fox silently. It was only by pure happenstance, and perhaps a little hint from her own instincts, that Lilith looked towards Belladonna in hopes for some supportive words of her own.

But as soon as she saw what Belladonna was doing, and more importantly why she was doing it, Lilith immediately lunged forwards.

Belladonna didn’t even have the wherewithal to think about dodging as Lilith lunged with her hand outstretched, however it wasn’t Belladonna that she grabbed. Instead she snatched a small, black leech from Belladonna’s arm and ripped it from her skin.

As soon as the little beast detached, the insatiable hunger that had been filling Belladonna completely vanished. The thoughts that she had still lingered in her mind, but they felt like nothing more than the delusions of a fever dream.

However, as odd as they were, she could feel in some instinctual level that the thoughts were still hers. They weren’t implanted in her mind by anything else, they were her thoughts and hers alone. They simply came from a deep and dark place that she never let loose, the corner of her mind where all the passing thoughts go to die to reason, logic and understanding.

A corner of her mind that might have been right next to where that other dark urge dwelled within her.

She blinked softly, turning towards Lilith who was proudly holding up a deep, blackish red leech the size of her index finger, as if she was a fisherman proud of her tiny catch. The leech wriggled in her hand, hissing in irritation as it tried to find somewhere to latch on, all while a strange black liquid dripped from its fang filled mouth.

"What is this thing?" Lilith asked, keeping it far away from herself as it wriggled in her hand. Instead of answering, Belladonna quickly looked at her arm to find a small bite mark on her perfect, porcelain skin, which sent a wave of revulsion through her body.

Saige turned at the noise, whipping his hand towards the disgusting little creature and blasted it with the white light, before letting out a sigh of relief this time.

"This is what we came here for," He explained, "That much I know. Although I can’t say for certain what it is."

"It’s a sin sucker." Belladonna said whilst wiping her arm in disgust.

"They do exactly what it sounds like. Feed on sins, like Wrath and Gluttony, you know. They practically gorge themselves on them. But since most people aren’t going out all the time committing sins for them to eat, they secret a substance that reduces inhibitions. Inspires the sins you naturally repress. It must have crawled its way into the boar’s heart or something."

"How do you know that? Have you met them before?" Saige asked.

Belladonna shook her head in response, "Not an alive one. I uh... knew a Hellion that liked them. They were like a delicacy to them. You might even like them Lilith. If you just think of it like a gummy worm or something."

Lilith gave the worm a slightly disgusted look, as it still wriggled in her hand. She was always one for trying new food, but she usually drew the line at something that was still alive at the time.

She wasn’t some kind of animal that was going to eat something alive. What kind of person could do such a thing?

Thankfully, her devoted fiance came to her rescue, like her adorable knight in fluffy armour as he said,

"I wouldn’t recommend it." He gestured over his shoulder to the massive boar,

"From what you say about this creature, and the details of the Divine Decree, this is more than just a case of wrath. I was told by the Beast God that the animals were being corrupted in body and spirit. The divination spell I was using was looking for the source of the corruption.

As it turns out, it’s not the Sin Sucker itself. It is merely the plague rat. It has been altered and corrupted itself. So the question remains, where did it come from?"
