Chapter 102: Chapter 102- play dirty

Although the dinner had to proceed despite the minor incident, Laurent couldn’t shake off the discomfort whenever she thought about the phone call Dave made to Adeline.

Leonardo wasn’t in a much better mood, though he didn’t show it.

As a man, Leonardo could sense the blatant provocation coming from Dave.

Heh.

Leonardo sneered inwardly. A man who only cherishes what he’s lost—what’s there to be proud of?

After dinner, the four parted ways. Adeline left with Eddie, while Leonardo drove Laurent home.

On the way to Laurent’s place, she finally spoke up after some thought.

"You’d better head back tomorrow. Go do whatever you need to do. If you’re taking a break, find a proper place where you can actually relax and rest."

Leonardo tilted his head to look at her, his eyes shimmering with faint light.

"Being here with you is exactly where I can relax and rest."

Laurent felt helpless in the face of Leonardo’s persistence.

"These past two days have been the weekend, so I’ve had some free time in the evenings. But tomorrow is Monday. After work, finishing around seven or eight in the evening is normal. I won’t have time to eat with you or meet you. All I want to do every day is go to bed and sleep."

Laurent was genuinely giving him the cold shoulder.

She truly felt that as long as Leonardo stayed around, Dave would keep creating trouble for her—once yesterday, once today—it was already enough to drive her crazy.

She didn’t know what more Dave might stir up if Leonardo stayed.

At the moment, she didn’t want to have any more involvement with Dave, and most importantly, she wasn’t in the mood for anything romantic with Leonardo. Even if he stayed here, it wouldn’t make a difference. All her energy was focused on her work.

Leonardo fixed her with a long, deep look but didn’t say anything more. He simply returned his focus to driving.

The car stopped in front of her building, and Laurent didn’t know what else to say. She could only bid Leonardo farewell.

After saying her goodbyes, Leonardo turned to look at her quietly.

"I know. You’re not in the mood to deal with me right now."

There was a hint of self-mockery in Leonardo’s words.

"Actually, my request isn’t much. As long as you don’t avoid me and still treat me like a friend, just like before, I’ll be satisfied."

Laurent protested unhappily,

"It should be *you* treating me like a friend. I’d be happy with that, okay? You haven’t contacted me in years."

Their friendship had completely ended. It all started with the wedding blessing he sent her, which made Laurent furious. Later, when he reached out to her, she ignored him.

At that time, she was angry—who would want to receive such a blessing at their wedding? Afterward, she went through a miscarriage and a series of other events, and didn’t have the energy to care about those things anymore.

Later, Leonardo stopped reaching out, and as a married woman, Laurent felt it wasn’t appropriate for her to contact her former admirer. So, their relationship remained frozen for years.

"You’re married. Why should I still be in touch with you? I can’t be just an ordinary friend to you."

After saying that, Leonardo asked her in return,

"Can you be friends with Dave now?"

Laurent fell silent.

Indeed, when you’ve truly loved someone, it’s impossible to be just friends with them after a breakup.

If you really want to let go, it’s probably only after finding a new place to belong that you can face everything with ease.

Laurent thought she understood Leonardo’s feelings because she felt the same.

Clearly, having someone who wholeheartedly cares for you should be a joyful thing, yet Laurent felt a deep discomfort in her heart.

She knew Leonardo was a good man and hoped he would find happiness, not waste his time on her. She understood the pain of loving someone without receiving the same in return. She had experienced it herself.

The two sat in the car, each lost in their own thoughts for a while, before Laurent finally turned and got out of the car.

The next morning, Leonardo called Laurent to tell her that he had to go back to Burg Eltz for work. Laurent breathed a sigh of relief, thinking her words from the previous night had made an impact.

What she didn’t know was that Leonardo had received a call from his agent. The agent told him that the advertisement deal he had been negotiating for a long time but couldn’t finalize had been unexpectedly revived. The company reached out, offering him to endorse the product, and the payment was *twice* the original amount.

Leonardo immediately knew what was going on. Considering Dave’s actions yesterday and today, he was certain this was all orchestrated by Dave, aiming to keep him away from Laurent.

Leonardo thought Dave’s behavior was truly childish and tiresome—just using his wealth to be reckless.

However, no matter how rich Dave was, he couldn’t buy Laurent’s kindness anymore.

Leonardo had to accept the advertisement deal, because he wasn’t just an individual—he was part of a team. He couldn’t jeopardize the entire team’s work because of a momentary fit of temper.

But Leonardo wasn’t the kind of person who could easily be manipulated. In fact, after seeing Laurent’s attitude toward him last night, he had planned to leave today. But then, Dave made his move as well.

Fine, if Dave was merciless, then Leonardo wouldn’t be the one to show mercy.

So, Leonardo called Laurent to tell her that he was leaving and then asked her,

"Aren’t you going to ask me why I suddenly have to end my vacation and shoot an advertisement?"

Laurent was a smart person. As soon as Leonardo said this, she almost understood the reason. After all, he had clearly told her that he was taking a break during this time and couldn’t possibly be on vacation for just two days.

But what could she say?

She didn’t want to mention Dave at all, so she could only remain silent.

On the other end of the line, Leonardo spoke with a cool tone, subtly criticizing Dave,

"Some people are eating from the bowl but still eyeing the pot."

This was a hint at Dave playing both sides.

Laurent had never had a good impression of Dave, and now that he had been scheming against Leonardo behind his back, with Leonardo adding fuel to the fire like this, Laurent felt even more frustrated with Dave.

Through the phone, Leonardo could sense Laurent’s disdain for Dave, successfully achieving his goal of badmouthing him in front of her. With a smile in his voice, he ended the call.

Dave wasn’t the only one who knew how to play dirty—Leonardo did too.
