You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 103- birthday
Dave returned to the country half a month later. He had wanted to come back sooner, but the circumstances didn’t allow for it.
After landing, he went straight to his mother’s place to visit his daughter.
He had never felt such a strong desire to return before, nor had he ever been so concerned about his daughter.
When he arrived at his mother’s house, the little girl was bent over the table, focused on making something, while Tiffany patiently helped her.
Dave greeted his mother and exchanged pleasantries. The little girl was happy to see him, calling out to him before lowering her head to continue working.
Dave’s mood became a little low. After being away on a business trip for more than half a month, his daughter didn’t greet him warmly. She had only called out to him and then ignored him.
He felt there should have been a kiss or a hug at least. However, after standing there for a while and seeing no response from her, he had no choice but to walk over to her.
The little girl was focused on her work, which was still a half-finished project, and Dave couldn’t tell what she was making.
He walked over and picked her up, placing her on his lap. This way, she could still continue her work, and he could have some closeness with her.
Then, he gently kissed her cheek before asking,
"What are you making?"
"A wind chime!"
The little girl answered him with a sweet, crisp voice, even more melodious than the wind chimes she was making.
A warm current flowed through Dave’s heart as he tightened his hold on her, pressing his cheek to hers and softly asking,
"Is this a kindergarten craft project?"
He vaguely remembered something like this from kindergarten. Laurent would often stay at home with her, making crafts like these. The table and floor would be covered with all sorts of materials, and just looking at it made his head ache.
"It’s not!"
The little girl sounded a little upset. She squirmed in his arms, then turned to look at him,
"Daddy, don’t you know?"
Dave was puzzled,
"Know what?"
Now the little girl was truly angry,
"Mom’s birthday is in a few days! I want to make a gift for her with my own hands."
Dave awkwardly held his daughter, letting her glare at him.
To be honest, he didn’t know the exact date of Laurent’s birthday. He only knew it was around this time of year, late spring or early summer.
And after just returning from a business trip, with his head still spinning and jet lag, how could he have immediately realized the little girl was talking about Laurent’s birthday?
Tiffany, his mother, shot him a disapproving look and stepped in to help him out,
"Sweetie, Daddy just came back from his trip and is really tired. He didn’t remember your mother’s birthday right away."
Tiffany knew that her son had no clue about Laurent’s birthday, which was why she gave him that look. This was probably what they called "getting what you deserve."
Even Tiffany, as his mother, remembered Laurent’s birthday.
Every year on Dave’s birthday, Laurent would always give him a gift, saying that a child’s birthday was the mother’s day of suffering. She would also prepare a huge spread of food and invite them to eat together.
With such thoughtfulness, Tiffany naturally remembered her birthday.
As for her son, he had never really paid attention to Laurent, always enjoying everything she gave him without a second thought. So, it was no surprise that he didn’t remember.
Tiffany helped smooth things over, and the little girl wasn’t as angry as she had been at the start. Dave quickly added,
"Daddy got Mommy a gift too. I just didn’t realize what you were talking about earlier."
"Really?"
The little girl was skeptical.
"Of course, really."
Dave gently lifted the little girl off his lap and set her back on the chair before getting up to open his suitcase. He pulled out the gift he had bought for Laurent, as well as one for the little girl.
Dave had indeed bought a gift for Laurent. Every time he went on a business trip, he would buy something for her, and he had done the same this time.
Although he knew they were already divorced and it seemed inappropriate to buy her a gift, he did it anyway.
The gift Dave bought for Laurent was a bracelet, a trendy style that was all the rage at the time—a knotted bracelet from a certain brand.
It wasn’t expensive, but the design was simple, elegant, and very practical. It looked great with all kinds of outfits.
Of course, these were secondary reasons. What really moved him was the deeper meaning behind the bracelet—the lover’s knot.
This gift was picked out with the help of his secretary. In the past, whenever he went on a business trip, he would ask his secretary to choose gifts for him. But this time, he had asked her to take him shopping and pick something together.
The secretary was young and fashionable, and well-versed in these things. When she saw that he had come to choose the gift in person, she knew he was putting thought into it. So, she recommended the bracelet to him.
She had also suggested other items, but he immediately fell for this one.
In his mind, he thought that giving her this bracelet would tie a knot in her heart, making sure she could never like anyone else again.
So, he bought it without hesitation.
Now, as he showed it to the little girl, she finally believed that he had indeed prepared a gift for Laurent, and her anger melted away.
Next, Dave took out the gift he had bought for his daughter. In addition to the pink Barbie doll he had promised her, he had bought her a large number of other things, both big and small.
When choosing gifts for his daughter, Dave had an overwhelming impulse to give her the whole world.
That was why he ended up buying so many things. The little girl, after all, was still a child, and once again, she was won over by the sweet temptation of so many presents. She happily ran over and gave him a big kiss on the cheek.
Dave had been waiting for this kiss ever since he returned, and now, he finally received it.
Seeing the father and daughter enjoying their time together, Tiffany got up to go to the kitchen and prepare something for Dave.
Taking advantage of his daughter’s happiness, Dave quickly asked,
"Emma, Daddy has a question for you..."
The little girl was busy putting a pink hairpin on her head.
"What’s the question?"
Dave hesitated before asking,
"When you make a mistake, what should you do so Mommy won’t be mad at you?"
The little girl paused, tilted her head, and looked at him.
"Daddy, did you make Mommy mad?"
Dave recalled the words he had said to Laurent that day, wishing her happiness, and reluctantly nodded.
The little girl started laughing.
"Daddy, don’t worry, Mommy is easy to coax. You just need to apologize, say that you were wrong and promise not to make the same mistake again, and she’ll stop being mad."
Dave: "..."
Apologize and say he was wrong? And promise he won’t make the same mistake again? 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
He had never said such humble words in front of her.
Moreover, he didn’t believe that an apology would make her forgive him given their current situation, so he thought it would be better to be fully prepared. He then asked his daughter again,
"What if she’s still mad after the apology?"
"Well, then you sing her a song."
The little girl lowered her head, continuing to inspect her gift while imparting her "wisdom" to Dave.
"One time, I apologized, but Mommy wouldn’t forgive me, so I kept bothering her and sang her a song. Then she started laughing."
"Singing?"
Dave felt like everything had just gone wrong.
How could he sing? He didn’t even like singing!
