Chapter 105: Chapter 105- A Terrifying Surprise

After Dave finished speaking, he didn’t hear Laurent respond and, feeling a bit anxious, he pressed,

"Why aren’t you saying anything?"

You see, because he was worried she wouldn’t pick up his call, he had deliberately used the hotel room phone, and even arranged for their daughter to speak with her first before handing the phone to him.

"There’s nothing to say."

Laurent replied coldly, then added,

"Thanks for bringing our daughter over. Tell me the hotel name and room number, and I’ll have her grandfather pick her up later."

Dave was so stunned by her words that he couldn’t say anything for a long while.

It was bad enough that she said there was nothing to talk about and hurt him with that, and it was one thing for her to want to take their daughter and leave him behind, but now she even wanted her father to pick up their daughter?!

Was she really trying to avoid him completely?

Had she developed such a strong dislike for him?

And, did she think that by bringing their daughter all the way here the night before, he was just going to drop her off with her?

Dave didn’t believe she couldn’t guess his intentions, but the fact that she was deliberately choosing to avoid him was even more infuriating!

In a fit of anger, he handed the phone to their daughter, as he had already instructed her to bring Laurent to the hotel.

He wanted to apologize for what he had said wrong last time, then celebrate her birthday with her along with their daughter, and, of course, give her the gift he had bought for her.

The little girl didn’t know what her parents had said to each other or the complex emotions between them. She was just enthusiastically inviting Laurent,

"Mom, come quickly, Daddy and I have prepared a surprise for you."

Looking at the balloons in the room, the little girl’s face was full of a radiant smile.

That day, Dave had told their daughter he was bringing her to celebrate Mom’s birthday. The little girl was very happy and said she wanted to give Mom a surprise.

This was exactly what Dave wanted, so he asked his daughter what would count as a surprise. The little girl tilted her head and thought for a long time before saying it should be like the birthday parties Mom used to prepare for her, with colorful balloons all over the walls.

Children are naturally imaginative, and who knows where she had seen such a scene on TV, but she also wanted him to cover the floor with flowers.

So, Dave went and bought balloons. After they arrived last night, he and their daughter began decorating the room. Dave specifically requested the most luxurious room the hotel had. The little girl couldn’t help much, and after a bit of playing around, she fell asleep.

He was left alone, struggling for a long time, but eventually, he had the room completely filled with balloons.

He had already arranged with the hotel front desk to send fresh flowers to the room first thing in the morning.

When Laurent was talking to Dave, she could be cold, but she couldn’t be that way with their daughter, especially when the little girl was so enthusiastically inviting her.

However, Laurent truly didn’t want to see Dave.

So, she had no choice but to endure the inner turmoil and gently coax the little girl,

"Emma, Mommy is very busy and can’t come over, but Grandpa will come and pick you up later, okay?"

In fact, she wasn’t busy at all. She had planned to rest that weekend, but because she didn’t want to see Dave, she had lied to her daughter.

But how could the little girl, who had worked so hard to prepare a birthday surprise for her, agree to her not coming?

At that moment, the little girl started to argue back,

"Mom, just come for a little while, I even made you a birthday gift myself."

"Come on, Mommy, just come for a bit—"

The little girl sincerely invited her, making it impossible for Laurent to refuse any longer.

Especially when the little girl said she had made the gift herself, Laurent couldn’t ignore the thoughtfulness behind it.

Last year, when it was her birthday, the little girl didn’t really understand these things and was a bit clueless.

But a year later, she understood the idea of preparing a birthday gift, and what’s more, she made it herself. As a mother, Laurent was so happy she nearly cried.

Every parent must feel the same way: they give so much to their children without complaint or regret, and yet, just a small token of the child’s affection can move them to tears.

So, Laurent had no choice but to say,

"Okay, wait for Mommy a little while, I’ll get up, freshen up, and come over to see you."

"Okay!"

The little girl happily agreed,

"Mom, I love you!"

No matter how much Laurent didn’t want to see Dave, she couldn’t refuse her daughter, not with such a sweet gesture.

After washing up and having breakfast, her parents were already out of the house, out for their morning walk.

Her parents were living a relaxed and peaceful life now. They woke up early every morning, had breakfast together, and left Laurent a portion.

After finishing breakfast, they would go for a walk—sometimes around the community square, by the lake, or along the road. They would stroll a few laps before heading to the morning market to buy some fresh vegetables.

Laurent envied them deeply.

She longed to have someone to walk hand in hand with until old age, someone who would remain steadfast no matter how busy or bustling the outside world was, someone who would never waver or abandon her.

She dreamed of growing old together, relying on each other even when their hair turned gray.

Perhaps it was because her parents were so affectionate that her views on marriage were so simple: as long as a family could stay close and love each other, that was enough.

So, during her marriage to Dave, she had always tried her best to maintain it.

Of course, her parents weren’t free from arguments; they had especially serious fights when they were younger.

However, Laurent believed that in a marriage, as long as there was no infidelity or disrespect towards either side’s parents, everything else was acceptable.

Apart from those two things, everything else was just trivial matters.

Which couple doesn’t argue when they spend all their time together?

But after the arguments, if both parties can recognize their own shortcomings and make efforts to improve, it only makes the relationship stronger.

However, now it seemed that simply envying her parents’ long-lasting marriage wasn’t enough; her own marriage had ended in utter failure.

With these thoughts on her mind, she took a taxi to the hotel where Dave and their daughter were.

When she knocked on the door and it opened, Laurent was shocked by the sight before her.

The floor was covered with fresh flower petals, and the room was filled with colorful balloons.

Dave was standing there, holding their daughter’s hand, his gaze deep and focused on her.

The little girl stood beside Dave, tilting her face up with a joyful look as she gazed at Laurent,

"Mom, are you happy? This is the surprise Daddy and I prepared for you."

Before Laurent could react, Dave’s deep voice came from the side,

"Happy birthday."

Laurent glanced at him, feeling a strong urge to turn around and run.

It wasn’t because she was moved, but because it was terrifying.
