You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 124- rumors
Diana had told Laurent everything out of goodwill, hoping to make her aware of what was being said.
"They’re saying you used to be a wealthy lady married into a rich family in Burg Eltz. And because you couldn’t have a son, you were kicked out."
Laurent frowned deeply upon hearing this. The story was utterly absurd.
Yes, Dave had been indifferent to their daughter in the past, but it had nothing to do with her being a girl. In fact, everyone in Burg Eltz—from the lord of the city to Lilian—adored her daughter immensely.
While her relationship with Dave had grown distant over the years, it was never due to any preference for a son.
Seeing Laurent’s dark expression, Diana hesitated, reluctant to continue. But Laurent forced a small smile and reassured her,
"It’s fine, Diana. Please go on."
Diana sighed and added,
"They’re also saying your husband had a mistress, and the media even caught pictures of them together. That’s why he abandoned you. And they claim that because you were kicked out with nothing—no money, no property—you’ve been forced to work again at your age just to make a living."
When Diana finished, Laurent’s entire body trembled with anger.
She couldn’t fathom who would be so malicious as to spread such slander about her.
Yes, she was divorced, and yes, it was because her husband had another woman. But she was never kicked out for failing to have a son. And she certainly wasn’t left destitute. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎
If she had wanted to, the wealth Dave casually offered her would have been more than enough to guarantee her a life of ease and comfort. But she didn’t want any of it.
Laurent was who she was now—a woman starting from scratch with nothing—because she wanted to create a life that was truly her own. She wanted to earn her place in society through her own abilities, not by relying on a man, or being forever labeled as "Mrs. So-and-So" wherever she went.
But in the mouths of gossipers, her story had been twisted into the image of a pitiful abandoned woman.
Overwhelmed by anger, Laurent found herself unable to speak. Diana quickly helped her to a nearby bench, urging her to sit down and offering comfort.
"Don’t let it get to you," Diana said gently. "These things just circulate for a while and then fade away. You just have to get through it."
Diana didn’t press her for more details—there was no need. Laurent’s expression alone confirmed that the rumors about her divorce were at least partially true.
"I did get divorced, but it wasn’t because I couldn’t have a son or was kicked out—"
Laurent tried to explain, but her voice wavered. She felt her emotions spiraling toward a breakdown, so she abruptly stopped herself, swallowing the rest of her words.
Covering her face with her hands, she fought to suppress her feelings, then quietly thanked Diana,
"Thank you, Diana. Please go back to work. I just need a moment to calm down."
Seeing Laurent in this state, Diana didn’t linger. She nodded and returned to the workshop to continue her tasks.
This was the second time in Laurent’s life that she had been the target of such vicious rumors. The first was when she and Dave had just gotten married and she lost their first child. Even now, thinking back to the cruel things people said back then made her heart ache.
And now, it was happening again.
They can spread rumors that she got a divorce, or that she was divorced because of a mistress; those are facts, and she has nothing to say about them. But why must they say such vicious things, like accusing her of being kicked out for not being able to have a son?
She was filled with enthusiasm to start a new life, but after hearing those rumors, that enthusiasm was sharply reduced.
But she knew deep down that if the rumors respected the truth, they wouldn’t be called rumors.
She sat there, slowly calming down, and began to analyze the people behind these slanders.
Danny would definitely not engage in such petty gossip, so he could be ruled out first. As for Samantha, Laurent didn’t think it was her.
Through the time spent together, Laurent could sense that Samantha was a very upright person, even to the point of being somewhat rigid. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have remained so diligent in the factory for all these years. In fact, with Samantha’s qualifications, she could have easily switched to a large company, but she hadn’t.
So, Laurent didn’t believe it was Samantha. She didn’t seem the type to stoop to such dirty tricks.
But if it wasn’t them, then who could it be?
Perhaps it’s a human instinct, but in that moment, Maggie’s face immediately appeared in Laurent’s mind.
Laurent didn’t want to believe that Maggie was behind all this, nor did she want to believe that such a young girl could have such malicious thoughts. She also felt that Maggie wouldn’t know anything about her past...
The more she thought about it, the more it gave her a headache, and the way people in the workshop looked at her made her uneasy. She decided to go back to her office and observe Maggie’s reaction.
Aside from Maggie, Laurent really didn’t know who else to suspect.
When she returned to the office, Maggie was on a call with a client, speaking in fluent English.
Laurent quietly returned to her seat. She had caught a mistake in Maggie’s call—Maggie had told the client that the fabric wouldn’t fade when, in fact, it had faded after being washed.
In the past, as soon as Maggie hung up, Laurent would have immediately notified her to get in touch with the client to correct the mistake.
But this time, Laurent suddenly felt hesitant. She wasn’t sure if the person she had been helping so much—Maggie—could also be the one pulling the strings behind her back.
As Laurent sat there, conflicted and watching Maggie, Maggie turned her head and met her gaze. Maggie clearly flinched.
In that instant, Laurent understood. If it wasn’t out of guilt, why would she be so evasive?
At that moment, Laurent’s heart truly turned cold.
