Chapter 125: Chapter 125- gossip

At this moment, only Laurent and Maggie were in the office. Norman was away on a business trip, and Samantha was busy in the workshop handling a large shipment.

After calming herself down, Laurent spoke coldly to Maggie,

"It was you, wasn’t it?"

Seeing that Laurent directly suspected her, Maggie admitted it readily. She crossed her arms and leaned back in her chair.

"I didn’t want to do this either, but who told you to always be better than me at everything? As newcomers who joined the factory at the same time, have you ever considered how I feel?"

Laurent was so angry that she let out a laugh.

"You refuse to make progress, and you expect me to do the same?"

Maggie scoffed.

"Do you have to be so harsh? Who says I refuse to improve? It’s you who’s too ambitious!"

Laurent was furious. Since when was working hard and striving for success a fault?

There were always people in this world who blamed others for their failures instead of reflecting on themselves and striving for improvement.

Laurent didn’t hold back as she accused Maggie,

"Maggie, I believe I’ve always treated you well. You ask if I’ve ever considered your feelings, but have you considered mine while spreading these malicious rumors about me?"

Maggie clearly didn’t expect Laurent to be so relentless. She was momentarily stunned by the question. Laurent had always been gentle, so Maggie assumed she would just endure it in silence.

In reality, Laurent used to be cheerful and outspoken, even a little fiery at times. But after experiencing so much, she had grown more composed. That didn’t mean she would let others trample over her.

Especially now, when Maggie was deliberately slandering her. There was no way Laurent would let it slide.

After regaining her composure, Maggie laughed indifferently.

"If you’ve got the guts, then go ahead and spread rumors about me too. But there’s nothing you can use against me. As the saying goes, ’flies don’t buzz around an uncracked egg.’ If you hadn’t actually been divorced, would there even be gossip about you today?"

Maggie had completely adopted a shameless attitude, making it clear she was ready to drag this out with Laurent.

Laurent glanced at Maggie and suddenly changed the subject.

"How did you find out about my divorce?"

Her gaze was sharper than ever, and for a moment, Maggie panicked and looked away. But she still tried to put on a strong front.

"W-Why does it matter how I found out? The point is, you *are* divorced!"

"You know Clark, don’t you?"

Laurent asked directly.

She had already analyzed the situation—there was no way Maggie could have known about her divorce on her own. The rumor about her husband being caught with his mistress was clearly referring to the recent incident where Dave and Clark were photographed together.

Besides, all of this had happened in Burg Eltz. Maggie worked in a small factory—how could she possibly know about it?

So, it was highly likely that someone had deliberately fed Maggie this information. And apart from Clark, there was no other outsider who could have done it.

The moment Laurent mentioned Clark’s name, Maggie immediately averted her eyes.

"I don’t know what you’re talking about. I have work to do—please don’t disturb me."

She then turned around and busied herself with her computer.

Laurent observed Maggie’s reaction and was certain now—Clark was definitely involved. Otherwise, Maggie wouldn’t be acting so evasive.

Laurent watched Maggie pretend to be focused on her work. Zoey spoke up,

"Maggie, heaven sees everything. As long as your conscience is clear, go ahead and keep spreading your rumors."

Throughout the entire exchange, Laurent never lost her temper. In the end, she simply threw this indifferent remark at Maggie.

This time, it was Maggie who couldn’t take it. She shot up from her seat, furious, and shouted at Laurent,

"Stop acting all passive-aggressive! If you can’t stand it, then leave! No one’s forcing you to stay here!"

Laurent chuckled.

"Getting rid of me—*that’s* your real goal, isn’t it?"

Now it all made sense. That’s why Maggie had teamed up with Clark to spread these rumors and slander her—she wanted to drive her out.

But how foolish. Did Maggie really think that getting rid of her would stop her from being reprimanded?

At the end of the day, Maggie was still the one who couldn’t do her job properly.

Maggie glared at her in frustration, while Laurent’s smile only widened.

"Yes, I *could* leave. And I wouldn’t be afraid to, because no matter where I go, I know I’ll do my job well and earn my superiors’ praise. But you? You won’t succeed anywhere, will you?"

Maggie’s face turned pale, then flushed red with embarrassment. She hadn’t expected that after all her scheming, she would be the one left humiliated and furious in the end.

Laurent couldn’t be bothered to argue with Maggie any longer.

"But I’m not leaving," she continued. "I’ll stay right here, work even harder, and make sure *you* are the one who gets sent packing first."

"You—!"

Maggie was so enraged by Laurent’s final words that she saw stars, but she had no confidence to fight back. In the end, she stormed out in frustration. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

Laurent watched as Maggie’s figure disappeared through the office door. Only then did she finally let down her guard, slumping weakly into her chair.

Although Laurent had calmly countered Maggie just now, how could she not feel hurt?

Anyone would be in pain if their privacy and wounds were being discussed so casually by others.

What she couldn’t understand was Maggie—she was a young woman with her whole life ahead of her. Why waste her energy on scheming and spreading filth instead of focusing on her work?

And she couldn’t understand Clark either.

Why did Clark keep entangling herself with her?

She had already divorced Dave—for *their* sake. So why was Clark still refusing to let her go?

Five years ago, they had never faced each other directly. Was Clark finally declaring war on her now? But Laurent’s heart no longer belonged to Dave. She had no desire to fight Clark over anything.

Truly, the human heart was the scariest thing of all.

But things had already come to this. The rumors had spread, and there was no way for her to silence them.

All she could do was comfort herself—treat it as the harshest yet most realistic lesson society had taught her since stepping into the workforce.

The only thing she could do now was endure the gossip and keep working.

After storming out of the office, Maggie found a quiet place, pulled out her phone, and angrily vented to the person on the other end.

"Clark, what do I do? She wasn’t even mad! Instead, *I’m* the one who ended up furious!"

On the other end, Clark chuckled softly.

"Oh, Maggie, you’re too naive. Think about it—being talked about like that, labeled as an abandoned woman, thrown out like trash... do you really think she *isn’t* angry?"

Maggie muttered in dissatisfaction.
