Chapter 134: Chapter 134- pamper him like before

The three of them settled the bill and left the restaurant. Laurent declined their offer to see her off and took a cab back home.

Earlier, Morrison had already introduced their client, a Frenchman named Brun, in his fifties. They had scheduled his visit for the days around the Dragon Boat Festival, which was convenient for Laurent since the domestic holidays would allow her to take fewer days off. She would only need to take one day off before the holiday and another after it, which meant a total of five days of travel, during which she and Dave would pretend to be a married couple.

The Dragon Boat Festival holiday was from Thursday to Saturday, so she would need to take Wednesday off, and Sunday would be adjusted as a workday, meaning she would need to take that day off as well.

She planned to ask Danny for leave on Monday after work, and use Monday and Tuesday to catch up on her tasks. That way, she could take her laptop with her and not fall too behind on work.

Suddenly, Laurent remembered something important and quickly took out her phone to call Dave.

Dave and Morrison had just parked their car at the hotel. When Dave saw Laurent’s call, his first thought was that she might be changing her mind. His voice had a hint of nervousness as he answered.

"What’s wrong?"

"There’s something important I forgot to mention to you."

Laurent spoke her terms clearly,

"I agreed to pretend to be your wife for these few days, but I won’t do everything for you like I did before. I’ll only do what’s necessary in front of your client. As for other things, like cooking, laundry, or making coffee, feel free to take care of it yourself."

She wasn’t going to look after every little thing for him anymore. She wouldn’t pamper him like before.

On the other end, Dave, relieved that she wasn’t backing out, immediately agreed, speaking in a soft tone,

"No problem, just do what makes you happy."

He had promised to treat her better in the future.

She didn’t fully believe his words, but she decided to let him prove it to her over time.

His voice was gentle and calm, traveling through the phone and sending a slight shiver through Laurent.

"Just agree, I’ll hang up now."

She quickly ended the call after saying this.

Her mind wandered back to the times she had complimented his voice. Whenever he traveled for work, she would call him at night, lingering on the line, reluctant to sleep until they’d chatted a bit. She loved hearing his voice — deep, rich, like a spring breeze or a glass of fine red wine. It was as comforting as a lazy winter morning. If voices could impregnate ears, his voice certainly possessed that kind of magic.

When Laurent got home, her father’s expression was far from pleased. As soon as she entered, he immediately asked,

"What’s going on with Dave?"

The person from the blind date had called her father, recounting everything that happened and angrily accusing Dave. Laurent realized there was no way to hide the truth from her parents anymore, so she decided to confess.

"He said he wants to pursue me again, but I’m not sure why he showed up there today."

"He wants to pursue you again?" Cassy was genuinely surprised.

Given how Dave had always held himself in high regard and how Laurent had been so devoted to him, Cassy thought she might have misunderstood.

Alex, however, was furious.

"What’s he trying to do? Realize he can’t live without you after the divorce, so he’s coming back to make you his caretaker again?"

Alex couldn’t stay calm, not when it came to matters involving his daughter.

Laurent tried to calm her enraged father, saying,

"Dad, please don’t be upset. No matter what his reasons are for wanting to pursue me again, I’ve already turned him down."

"Are you serious?" Alex asked, still in disbelief.

Laurent felt a pang of sadness as her parents’ worried gazes settled on her. They were clearly afraid she might fall back into Dave’s manipulative charm. She understood their concerns, but her resolve only strengthened as she reassured them,

"Really, Dad, I’ve already turned him down. After we pretend to be a couple, I hope he keeps his word and stays away for good."

She wanted to be firm in her decision, knowing that continuing a one-sided marriage had caused endless pain, not only for herself but also for her parents, who had lost their voice in front of him. She wouldn’t make that mistake again.

Laurent didn’t dare tell her parents about the fake marriage arrangement with Dave; instead, she told them she was going on a business trip for a few days. If they knew the truth, they’d likely be furious. But Laurent believed this would be the only way to settle things once and for all. It was the only way to get the peace she craved.

Her life had been full of constant interference, whether it was Clark’s slanders or today’s interruption with the blind date. She couldn’t keep living this way.

After calming her parents down, she retreated to her room and updated her group chat with Vivian and the others. Vivian, however, was quick to express her disapproval.

"Laurent, how could you agree to his unreasonable demand? This is clearly like a sheep walking into a tiger’s den!"

Meanwhile, Marylin and Zoey remained silent in the group chat, their lack of response adding to Laurent’s unease.

Vivian was still furious and couldn’t hold back her protests:

"Marylin, Zoey, you two better talk some sense into Laurent! What kind of nonsense is this? Dave is shameless!"

Vivian couldn’t stand the thought of Laurent having any further connection with Dave, not even a tiny bit.

Finally, Marylin spoke up, her words philosophical:

"All things are predestined, and everything has its own natural course. We just have to let things unfold."

Vivian, clearly frustrated, shot back:

"Can you speak normally, please?"

Zoey, understanding Marylin’s intention, stepped in to explain:

"Marylin means that everything is fate, and there’s nothing we can control. We just have to let things go naturally."

Marylin gave Zoey a thumbs-up, praising her for the perfect interpretation.

Vivian sighed in mock exasperation:

"I swear, you two are like telepathic twins."

Marylin responded lightheartedly:

"We’re planning to be together after 35, so of course we’re in sync."

Laurent read through the conversation, reflecting on Marylin’s words. After some thought, she replied:

"Although everything is fated, I believe we often still have control over our destiny. Don’t worry, after these few days, I’ll make sure to cut ties with him for good."
