Chapter 135: Chapter 135- unreasonable

Since the Brown couple was arriving at Burg Eltz on Wednesday morning, Laurent had to get there on Tuesday night so she could go to the airport with Dave the next morning to pick them up.

Dave had offered to pick her up. When Laurent finished work on Tuesday afternoon, she saw him waiting outside.

It was rush hour when Laurent stepped out—both office staff and workshop workers were finishing their shifts and pouring out of the factory gates in large numbers to get dinner. Many of them noticed the strikingly handsome man leaning against a black luxury car outside the factory. His composed demeanor and effortless charm made him stand out.

Laurent stood there, holding her small suitcase, feeling torn—should she go forward or not?

Was he trying to add more fuel to the gossip about her?

Seeing her hesitate, Dave took the initiative to walk over. He reached for her suitcase while looking at her and said,

"Let’s go. Get in the car."

Under the gaze of the bustling crowd, Laurent felt like she was about to catch fire. Lowering her head, she hurried toward his car. But before she could take more than a few steps, someone called out to her.

" Laurent!"

It was Diana, a workshop worker she was quite close with.

Laurent had no choice but to stop and turn around. She saw Diana pushing her electric scooter toward her, though her gaze kept darting toward Dave, who was standing beside her.

"I heard you took a few days off? What happened? Is everything okay at home?"

Diana was asking out of concern, so Laurent smiled and replied,

"No, it’s nothing serious. Just some personal matters to take care of."

"Oh, I thought something was wrong. If you need any help, just let me know," Diana said with a cheerful smile. Then, her gaze shifted to Dave.

"And who is this?"

Laurent felt a headache coming on. She had no idea how to introduce Dave. A divorced woman entangled with her ex-husband in front of so many people—it just didn’t seem appropriate.

To make matters worse, as they stood there chatting with Diana, several nosy onlookers—mostly middle-aged women who loved gossip—had paused in their tracks, watching from a short distance away, eager to figure out what was going on between her and Dave.

Before Laurent could come up with an answer, Dave took a step forward on his own and introduced himself.

"I’m Laurent’s ex-husband, Dave. I came to pick her up from work."

Just as Dave finished speaking, a worker on an electric scooter wobbled out of the factory gate, nearly crashing into Laurent.

Dave’s face instantly darkened. He took a quick step forward, pulling Laurent into his arms, his entire demeanor turning icy as he snapped at the rider,

"If you don’t know how to ride, then don’t!"

The rider, startled by his cold reprimand, nearly lost their balance and struggled to steady the scooter.

"S-sorry, I didn’t expect so many people to be here..."

He was innocent too, okay? He hadn’t expected so many people to be gathered here when he rode out. In his rush to brake, the scooter lost balance slightly, which was why he almost crashed into Laurent.

As the commotion unfolded, Laurent, who had been held protectively in Dave’s arms, finally came to her senses. She quickly pushed him away and, feeling a bit embarrassed, turned to the rider and said,

"It’s fine, you didn’t actually hit me."

The rider glanced at her, then at Dave, before finally riding away.

Diana chuckled from the side.

"Alright, Laurent, we’ll leave you to it. We won’t disturb you any longer," she said, preparing to leave.

Diana had more or less figured out that Dave was Laurent’s ex-husband. The reason she had stopped Laurent for a chat in the first place was to let everyone see for themselves whether Laurent was really some abandoned woman. She wanted to stand up for her.

Since Diana interacted with Laurent often, she knew how serious and dedicated she was—both to work and to life. She admired Laurent and couldn’t stand seeing her constantly subjected to gossip and ridicule.

But now, there was nothing more she needed to say or do.

Was there any need to ask more questions?

Just from Dave’s instinctive reaction of protecting her, it was clear enough—was she really an abandoned woman who had been cast aside?

What kind of ex-husband would insist on carrying an "abandoned" ex-wife’s suitcase?

What kind of ex-husband would come to pick up an "abandoned" ex-wife from work?

What kind of ex-husband would fly into a rage just because his "abandoned" ex-wife was almost hit by a scooter?

If anything, it seemed more like he was the one who had been abandoned.

Diana scoffed disdainfully at the crowd of onlookers behind her, then mounted her electric scooter and rode off with an air of triumph.

She trusted that none of them were blind—surely, after today, they wouldn’t dare spread any more nonsense.

Meanwhile, Laurent and Dave got into the car, and the sleek black vehicle headed straight for Burg Eltz.

That morning, before leaving, Laurent had already packed her suitcase and told her parents she was going on a business trip.

The car cruised smoothly down the highway, and an air of silence filled the cabin.

Eventually, Dave broke the quiet.

"What do you want for dinner? I’ll book a restaurant."

Laurent replied politely, "No need, I already made plans to eat with Adeline."

Dave felt a tightness in his chest, but there was nothing he could say.

Laurent had indeed made dinner plans with Adeline. It had been quite a while since they last met, and besides, when Adeline heard that Laurent was going to pretend to be married to Dave, she became extremely worried and insisted on meeting her.

After a moment of thought, Laurent added,

"I’m staying at Adeline’s place tonight."

Since they were supposed to be acting as a married couple, she was technically supposed to stay at Villas for the next few days. But Laurent figured that the less time she spent around Dave, the better. His client hadn’t arrived yet anyway, so she decided to stay with Adeline for the night and have a proper chat with her.

Dave immediately objected.

"Adeline and Eddie are living together now!"

Last time, Morrison had sent him photos of Laurent taking Leonardo out to dinner with Adeline and her new boyfriend. Dave had someone look into it afterward, so he knew about Eddie—and that Adeline and Zhou Yan were now cohabiting.

Laurent didn’t think much of it.

"So what? It’s not like she only has one bedroom."

Just because Adeline was living with Eddie, did that mean she couldn’t stay over for a night?

Adeline’s place had two bedrooms. She had stayed there before.

Dave was about to explode.

"You’re seriously okay with staying at someone else’s place, under the same roof as a strange man?"

Laurent found his reaction completely unreasonable.

"What’s there to be concerned about? And besides, Eddie isn’t a stranger—he’s Adeline’s boyfriend!"

"So what if he’s Adeline’s boyfriend? Who can guarantee he doesn’t have even the slightest inappropriate thoughts?"

To Dave, the idea of her staying in the same house as another man was a huge risk.

You could never be too careful.
