Chapter 16: Chapter 16- into a fight

Laurent couldn’t help but feel her nose tingle with emotion.

Her father had been firmly opposed to her marrying Dave from the start. Everyone knew that Dave didn’t love her, and that he hadn’t married her willingly. But back then, Laurent had been so determined, almost obsessively, to marry him. Her mother, feeling sorry for her, had stepped in to persuade her father, saying that it was Laurent’s choice and that they, as parents, should respect it.

The joy and pain, the happiness and suffering—it was all her own choice.

After much persuasion from her mother, her father had reluctantly agreed, but he never had any faith in the marriage.

Even after the wedding, Dave hardly ever visited her parents’ home. His relationship with her in-laws was very distant. Her mother was more understanding, but her father’s opinion of this son-in-law was extremely negative.

So now, when Laurent said she was getting a divorce, it wasn’t surprising that her father was so supportive. In his eyes, this marriage was something she should have ended long ago.

Her mother cut her father off and calmly asked on the other end, "What about Emma?"

Laurent told her mother her plans honestly.

"I’m going to fight for her custody and take her with me back to the county. I don’t plan to come back here..."

After Laurent finished speaking, there was silence on the other end for a while. Then, her mother softly spoke.

"Your mother still says the same thing: Whatever decision you make, we support you. If you’re tired, just come home."

Her mother’s gentle words soothed her wounded heart, and Laurent cried uncontrollably.

"Mom, I’m sorry. It’s all my fault for being so stubborn back then, refusing to listen to your advice..."

It was only in front of her parents that she could let herself be vulnerable and cry without holding back.

At this moment, Laurent’s tears were for her parents.

Now that she had a daughter, she could imagine how heartbroken she would be if one day her daughter went through such a failed marriage. The pain would be unbearable.

And now, her parents were going through that same heart-wrenching pain.

She hated herself because her stubborn decision had not only caused her daughter unhappiness but had also made her parents worry. She felt like an unforgivable person.

Not long after ending the call with her mother, Laurent received a text message. It was a transfer of 30,000 dollar into her bank account from her mother, followed by another message:

"Use this money to handle the divorce procedures. Since we’ve come this far, don’t use anyone else’s money anymore."

Laurent stared at the message on her phone, biting her lip, silently crying.

Her parents’ support for her divorce was so swift, which meant they had already seen through her marriage. She had been foolishly trying to hold on to something that was already beyond repair.

After Adeline returned, Laurent told her that she wanted to go back to pack her things and asked if she could help watch her daughter. Adeline agreed readily.

Before leaving, Laurent went into the bedroom to check on her daughter, but found the little girl was running a high fever, her face flushed and her body burning with heat. Laurent didn’t even care about packing anymore and quickly took her daughter’s temperature, then began physical cooling methods.

Adeline, being a mother herself, helped out competently. By the time they were done, Laurent had lost all interest in going back to pack. She just wanted to stay by her daughter’s side, praying that her fever would subside soon.

The little girl must have caught a cold because she was underdressed today.

Laurent felt utterly exhausted. Her daughter’s illness was truly a double burden on both her body and mind.

The bitterness and pain simultaneously pierced her heart, and Laurent’s tears burst out once again.

How much of a failure was she to have turned her marriage into this, to have shaped her daughter’s image of her father like this?

Because he didn’t love her, he didn’t love the daughter she gave birth to either, which was why he didn’t want to be close to her, even though the girl had his blood running through her veins.

Unable to bear hearing her daughter’s cries any longer, she coldly shouted into the phone at the other end,

"I’m not coming back tonight. You calm her down!"

And then she hung up the phone without hesitation.

After hanging up, she tossed the phone aside, sat down on the couch, and bit her lip, trying to suppress her emotions. However, her tears continued to fall, hot and relentless.

After physically cooling down her daughter and applying a fever patch, Laurent managed to temporarily control her temperature. She didn’t dare to sleep, instead working on her resume and looking for jobs while keeping an eye on her daughter. Adeline had offered to help, but Laurent declined. Adeline had worked all day and was exhausted, so Laurent let her go back to sleep.

After all, in the past, whenever her daughter fell ill, she had always taken care of her on her own, and she could handle it.

Initially, Laurent thought her daughter was just sick from the cold due to wearing too little. However, in the middle of the night, the little girl suddenly started vomiting and having diarrhea, which scared Laurent out of her wits. Adeline, hearing the commotion, also woke up, and the two of them quickly took a taxi to the children’s hospital.

After doing a stool test and asking about the symptoms, the doctor finally diagnosed her with acute gastroenteritis, prescribing medication and advising a diet adjustment.

While Laurent was at the payment desk on the first floor, she saw a familiar figure in the emergency lobby nearby.

It was Dave. He was holding a woman in his arms, and the woman was wearing a large mask that covered most of her face, with only her eyes visible. She looked weak and frail, almost entirely leaning against him.

Even though they weren’t very close, and even though the woman’s face was mostly hidden by the mask, Laurent could still tell that the woman was Clark.

She took a step back, turning around the corner to avoid the two of them, who were walking closely together.

Her daughter was here, vomiting, having diarrhea, and running a fever, yet he was accompanying another woman to the emergency room in the middle of the night.

How ironic.

Laurent thought to herself that she was truly disappointed in Dave.

After paying and picking up the medication, Laurent and Adeline took a taxi back home. The little girl, completely drained from the ordeal, was limp and nestled in Laurent’s arms, clinging to her, insisting she hold her.

So, from the hospital to the taxi ride, and all the way back home, Laurent carried her daughter the whole time, not feeling tired or overwhelmed.

Once home, after giving her daughter the medication and settling her down, neither Laurent nor Adeline felt like sleeping. The two of them sat on the living room sofa, chatting.

Adeline asked her, "How’s the job search going?"

Laurent shook her head. "It’s so hard. I have no work experience, and I’ve been out of touch with society for five years..."

Adeline thought for a moment before kindly suggesting, "The high-end clothing store across from our nail salon is hiring..."

Adeline wasn’t sure if Laurent, who had always lived a life of comfort, would be willing to take such a job, so she merely brought it up cautiously.

"I’ll do it!"

Laurent remembered the 30,000 yuan her mother had just transferred to her tonight. After a moment of thought, she agreed right away. At nearly thirty years old, still relying on her parents for support, she felt really like a failure.

Moreover, after the difficulty she faced in searching for jobs online all afternoon, she wasn’t picky anymore.

As long as she could find a place to work and earn money, she would be content.

Adeline agreed, "Then tomorrow I’ll ask the store manager about the specific requirements."

Laurent went back to check on her daughter. After taking the medicine, the little girl seemed to feel a bit better, turned over, and continued sleeping.

Laurent thought to herself that since she couldn’t sleep anyway and Dave was with Clark, she knew he wouldn’t be coming home tonight. She might as well take this time to quickly pack up her things. This way, she wouldn’t have to worry about running into him when she went back later and possibly getting into a fight.
