You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 174-I miss you too
During this period, Laurent didn’t feel confident at all. All her strength was just a façade, but now, she was truly filled with confidence.
After leaving the bathroom, she touched up her makeup in front of the mirror before returning to the private room. It was at this moment that Dave’s call came through.
She answered, and after a brief silence on the other end, his voice finally came through. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
"What are you doing?"
Laurent answered simply, "Eating."
She could hardly remember the unpleasantness between them when she had just gotten off the plane. After all, she wasn’t the one who had been upset at the time, so she didn’t hold onto it. When he called, she just answered as usual.
"Still eating this late?"
On the other end, Dave glanced at the time. It was already past 9, and she was still eating? He couldn’t help but furrow his brows.
Laurent actually didn’t want to say too much to Dave, so she gave him a simple response, "I have a client."
It was a strange thing—today was actually the day she landed her first client, and she felt joyful and excited. Yet, when Dave called, she didn’t feel the urge to share her excitement with him.
But she didn’t.
When it came to her own accomplishments at work, she didn’t want to talk about them with Dave. Subconsciously, she felt that a person like him, such a powerful figure, wouldn’t care about her small achievements. Even if she did tell him or shared her feelings, it might just lead to him giving her a merciless blow or, worse, dismissing it as nothing worth celebrating.
So, she wouldn’t tell him.
Dave had no idea of the twists and turns in her mind. All he heard was that she had a client, and his expression immediately changed. His tone became more serious.
"So, you’re out there drinking with a bunch of men?"
Dave’s life was full of social gatherings, and he knew exactly what kind of people frequented those events—mostly men. And at those gatherings, a young, beautiful woman like her was the most likely to be the target of inappropriate jokes or the unwanted attention of men with ulterior motives.
Although he personally always kept his distance at these events, never making any inappropriate remarks or gestures toward the female guests, and certainly not allowing himself to be harassed by other women, that didn’t mean all men behaved the same way. Even men who were normally decent could change after a few drinks. Out of ten, eight would start acting inappropriately.
So, when he heard she was at a social event, his first reaction was anger, followed by unease. He couldn’t stand the thought of any man making lewd comments toward her, let alone trying to take advantage of the situation to touch her.
Laurent sensed his sudden anger but was confused.
"Is there a problem?"
Who doesn’t have to attend social gatherings at work? Isn’t that just part of the job? He himself was someone who often went to such events, so why was he overreacting like this about her attending one?
Of course, she didn’t understand. What Dave cared about wasn’t that she was attending a social event, but whether or not she would be harassed while there.
Finally, after managing to suppress his negative emotions, Dave asked her in a low voice:
"Who are you with at this gathering?"
Since he couldn’t stop her from attending, he needed to know exactly who she was with. He wanted to make sure these people were safe. Even if he didn’t know them, he could use his network to check.
If he didn’t figure this out, he wouldn’t be able to sleep that night.
"Dave, what are you doing? Are you checking my background?"
Laurent found his behavior completely unreasonable.
"Besides, even if I told you who I was with, do you know them all?"
Dave insisted, "It doesn’t matter if I know them or not. You just need to tell me who you’re with."
Laurent was really too lazy to waste time on him. She quickly listed the people she had dinner with, including Matthew’s full name, and then said:
"Alright, I’m done. I’m hanging up."
And with that, she hung up the phone.
In fact, there were only a few people at dinner: her, Samantha, Danny, Matthew, and two of his company’s salespeople, one male and one female. The two salespeople were about the same age as her, but they had been working for several years, while she was still a newcomer.
Laurent didn’t think there was any danger. First of all, Samantha and the female salesperson from Matthew’s company were both women. Second, from what she observed, Matthew was quite a refined man. As for Danny, who had been working at the factory every day recently, Laurent could also tell he wasn’t the kind of person who would act inappropriately.
Meanwhile, Dave, who had been hung up on, frowned as he pondered the names she had mentioned.
He knew Matthew, and indeed, he was a well-mannered man. As for the two salespeople under him, Dave made a special call to check them out and found no record of any misconduct. That eased his mind somewhat.
However, after ten o’clock, he called Laurent again to ask if she had already returned to the hotel.
Laurent had just entered her room when she received his call again, and she was on the verge of losing it. In fact, not long after she returned to the private room, their dinner had ended. Everyone had been exhausted from the trade show all day, so they were all eager to finish up and head back to the hotel to rest.
"What now?"
Laurent kicked off her high heels and threw herself onto the bed, tired and impatient as she asked him.
He had been calling her repeatedly all evening. What was going on? She was so tired now, all she wanted to do was sleep!
Actually, Dave’s reason for calling this time was just to check if she had returned to the hotel. Once she was back, it would mean she was safe. Thinking of this, he reminded her:
"Make sure to lock the anti-theft lock on your door when you sleep, both locks."
Every hotel room door has a locking function, but there’s also a safety chain lock that many people forget to use. This is actually quite unsafe.
When he reminded her, Laurent realized she hadn’t latched that safety chain, so she quickly got up and went to secure it. Out of politeness, she said to him:
"Thanks."
"When will you be back?"
Dave asked again. Since he had reminded her to lock the door, Laurent decided to tell him the truth:
"Probably the day after tomorrow."
"Let me know your flight details. I’ll pick you up at the airport, at Burg Eltz. Stay for the night. Our daughter misses you too."
Dave paused when he said this:
"I miss you too."
Since the last time she went back, they hadn’t seen each other. He missed her so much it was making him anxious.
His words suddenly reminded Laurent of that night, and she immediately rejected him, using work as an excuse:
"No, I still have a lot of work to do when I get back."
His suggestion to stay for the night was too ambiguous. She didn’t want to keep this kind of ambiguous relationship going with him. Besides, after these few days at the trade show, she indeed had a lot of work to catch up on.
Since he had mentioned their daughter, she quickly added:
"When I get back, my parents will be at Burg Eltz for a wedding. They’ll pick up Emma, and I’ll meet them after I land and we’ll all go back together."
She had already planned everything. She was flying back on Friday, and her parents had told her they were going to Burg Eltz that day for a wedding—one of her old friend’s children was getting married, and they were invited to the celebration.
It worked out perfectly for them to pick up their daughter and head back together.
Dave couldn’t quite put into words what he was feeling. Her plan was so perfect, yet he wasn’t included in it...
For a moment, he didn’t want to say anything. He simply replied with a quiet "Goodnight" and hung up the phone.
Laurent stared at the phone after it was disconnected, feeling that his mood had been so unpredictable lately. They always say that a woman’s heart is as deep as the sea, but why did his emotions seem just as changeable as the weather in June?
One moment he was indifferent, the next he was angry, and then he sounded as if he was in sorrow.
But she couldn’t be bothered to care about it anymore. After taking a shower in the bathroom, she threw herself onto the big bed and fell asleep.
