Chapter 175: Chapter 175- ex

Laurent’s flight back was at 4:00 PM, and she arrived at Burg Eltz airport. Since she had arranged with Danny and Samantha to go pick up her daughter and parents first, Danny and Samantha left ahead.

Matthew and his group were on the same flight back. When they heard she was going to Burg Eltz to pick up her daughter from the city, they kindly offered to give her a ride. Just as Laurent was feeling a bit guilty for troubling him, she received a call from her mother.

Before getting on the plane, she had told her mother that they would meet at Tiffany’s, so she thought her mother was calling to check if she had arrived.

But when she answered the phone, her mother’s voice on the other end was frantic.

"Laurent, something’s happened. Your father was hit by a motorcycle and has been sent to the hospital—"

"What?"

Laurent was shocked.

"How could he be hit by a car?"

Her mother was crying on the other end.

"We were supposed to pick up Emma and go back together. Tiffany came to pick up Emma from kindergarten early. Your father and I went with her. After we picked up Emma, we were walking to Tiffany’s house, but halfway there, someone on a motorcycle suddenly swerved out. Actually, they weren’t trying to hit your father—they were after Emma. There was someone on the back of the motorcycle who was trying to kidnap Emma. Your father got caught up in a struggle while trying to stop them and was hit."

When Laurent heard that the person was targeting Emma, her legs went weak. And then, hearing that her father had been sent to the hospital, she nearly collapsed. Thankfully, Matthew was standing nearby and reached out to support her, asking in concern,

"What happened?"

Laurent steadied herself, sharply pinching her arm to calm down. But her voice was trembling, and there were already tears in her eyes.

"Which hospital are you at? I’ll be there right away!"

After Cassy told her the name of the hospital, Laurent hung up the phone and rushed out, frantically searching for a taxi.

Matthew, who was standing nearby, grabbed her.

"My driver just arrived. Where are you going? I’ll take you."

Laurent’s face was covered in tears. Her daughter and parents were her life. She would give up her own life to ensure their safety, but now, something had happened to them. From the tone of her mother’s voice, it seemed Emma was fine, but her father...

The thought of it made Laurent’s heart feel like it was being torn apart. She had originally felt guilty about troubling Matthew by riding with him, but now, with this incident, she had no other choice.

Once in the car, she told Matthew’s driver the name of the hospital her mother had mentioned, and the driver sped off.

Laurent sat in the backseat, trembling uncontrollably.

She couldn’t bring herself to think about her father, or her daughter, or the scene her mother had described.

She couldn’t bear to imagine what would have happened if her father hadn’t stopped those two people and if they had succeeded in kidnapping Emma. What would she have done? She thought she would lose her mind. No, she would probably die from the shock.

If anything were to happen to her daughter, her life would be ruined. There would be no reason left for her to live.

Because she was so overwhelmed with emotion, Laurent bit down hard on her lip, her hands clenched tightly, trying to control her feelings. Otherwise, she feared she might scream from the panic inside her.

Matthew, sitting beside her, watched her closely and quickly reached out to pry her hands apart.

"Laurent? Laurent! Calm down!"

Matthew shouted at her sharply.

"Calm down, you’re going to hurt yourself!"

Laurent snapped out of it and saw that her palms were deeply gouged by her own nails, turning an alarming shade of purple. If she kept squeezing like that, her palms would tear open.

She released her tightly clenched hands and raised one to cover her face.

Matthew, noticing this, gave a command to the driver.

"Go faster!"

Throughout the ride, Laurent’s phone rang several times, but she didn’t answer, especially when she saw it was Dave calling.

After a moment of calm, Laurent began to analyze why something like this had happened to her daughter and father today. The ominous feeling she had when she saw Clark at the supermarket returned to her mind.

Her intuition told her that Clark was probably behind this incident.

Laurent didn’t want to think that badly of Clark, nor was she paranoid, always attributing things to Clark. It was just that she had this inexplicable feeling in her heart.

So, when she saw Dave’s call at that moment, how could she be in the mood to answer?

Because every time she saw Dave’s name, she thought of his entanglement with Clark. It reminded her that it was because he hadn’t properly dealt with his past with Clark that it had led to Clark’s crazy revenge.

What’s more, this time Clark’s revenge was aimed at her daughter and father, the people she cared about most in this world. If Clark’s previous spreading of rumors to hurt her had only made her disgusted, then this time, when Clark targeted her daughter and father, it made her hate him with all her being.

So, when she saw Dave’s call, all she felt was irritation, anger, and hatred.

She hated him for being so entangled with Clark. She knew she was losing control, but she didn’t care at that moment.

After hanging up Dave’s call again, Matthew, who had been sitting beside her, asked,

"What’s your relationship with Dave?"

For Matthew, it was obvious what her relationship with Dave was just from the repeated calls. However, at this moment, he asked the question on purpose, just to start a conversation and distract her from her emotions.

Laurent turned to look at Matthew, a self-deprecating smile forming on her lips.

"I’m his ex-wife. But I hope you don’t deliberately place orders with me just because of this relationship."

Even in this situation, Laurent still hoped Matthew would maintain some respect for her.

Matthew smiled.

"I was wondering why you seemed so familiar. But don’t worry, when I chose your factory, I didn’t know about your relationship with Dave. I definitely didn’t choose to work with you because of him. You don’t need to feel pressured."

Laurent’s wedding to Dave had been a huge event, and as a prominent figure in Burg Eltz, Matthew had some recollection of her. However, she had disappeared from public view afterward. So when he first saw her, he couldn’t remember who she was.

When he saw Dave’s name on her phone just now, he finally realized she was Dave’s little wife, but didn’t expect that she introduced herself as his "ex-wife."

It made sense though. If she wasn’t his ex-wife, why would she have ended up in such a small factory, trying to make a living on her own? If she wasn’t his ex-wife, she would probably still be that anonymous Mrs. Washington, the woman behind Dave, and not out here, in the open.

The two of them didn’t speak again throughout the journey. Laurent was in a daze, her mind almost numb.
