Chapter 184: Chapter 184- Bad luck

At the Hospital

Clark lay motionless on the hospital bed, her face bruised and swollen, ribs fractured, pain coursing through her body with every breath. Her teeth sank into her lips, the only way she could stop herself from groaning in agony—and from letting the hatred surging inside her spill over.

In the depths of that seething resentment, she recalled the phone call she had received that day.

It had been from Dave, on the morning after Laurent’s daughter had nearly been kidnapped.

She had answered the call with complete composure, unbothered. After all, they had no proof linking the incident back to her.

"Dave, what a surprise! What made you think of calling me?"

She remembered how cheerful and bright her tone had been, as if nothing had happened.

But then, she heard him laugh.

At first, she had been taken aback—pleasantly so. It had been a long time since she’d last heard him laugh.

But soon, she noticed something chilling in the sound, a cold amusement that seeped through the phone and coiled around her like ice, sending a shiver down her spine.

"Playing dumb, framing others... how pathetic," he murmured.

Then, his voice dropped into something razor-sharp, dripping with venom.

"Clark, since you refuse to part ways peacefully... let’s play, then."

She had been standing in front of her full-length mirror when she heard those words.

For a moment, shock made her stumble back a step. But she forced herself to steady, to keep her expression from betraying even the slightest trace of fear.

"You—what do you mean?"

It was impossible. He couldn’t possibly know that she was faking her illness. Even Bert didn’t know her mental condition was a charade. If Bert knew, why else would he have sent her back to her home country?

What she didn’t realize was that someone as shrewd as Bert could easily see through her act. The reason he let her go was because she no longer served any purpose in his life.

By sending her back, she could continue to meddle with Dave. To Bert, that was just as well.

On the other end of the line, Dave’s voice was cold and menacing.

"Do you really need me to explain? You should know exactly what I mean. I’m calling to tell you one thing—this game has begun."

A chill of fear began to settle in her chest. After knowing him for so long, he had never once spoken to her in such a harsh tone. This conversation was a clear sign that he was ready to turn against her.

She refused to accept it.

"Dave, how can you do this to me? After all I’ve sacrificed for you, and now you repay me like this!"

Her voice was raw, hoarse from shouting. She didn’t believe he had any evidence linking her to the kidnapping attempt. In her desperation, she tried to appeal to his conscience, hoping he would relent.

After her outburst, she fell into soft sobs.

"Dave, why do you torture yourself like this? And why torture me too? You don’t love Laurent. All your feelings for her are tied to the fact that you share a daughter! That’s it!"

She was certain that Laurent had only kept him because of their daughter, which was why she had tried to have their daughter kidnapped. Without their daughter, the bond between them would disappear.

Now, she could openly abandon Laurent and be with Dave without any shame.

But unfortunately, things hadn’t gone according to plan. Her scheme failed, though it did manage to frighten his daughter and injure Laurent’s father—enough to make her feel a twisted sense of satisfaction for the time being. Laurent’s heart, no doubt, must be aching.

Yes, seeing her suffer brought Clark some twisted joy.

Her ramblings only led to Dave coldly hanging up on her. Not long after, the video of her abusing a child went viral online, and soon after, she found herself in the hospital.

As she lay in the hospital bed, Clark couldn’t stop replaying the warning call from Dave in her mind, feeling a mix of hatred and frustration.

She hadn’t expected him to actually take action against her—and with such brutality.

Her mind and body had both suffered, and now, in Burg Eltz, her reputation was completely ruined. It would be nearly impossible for her to find a job again.

If she didn’t think about it, it wasn’t so bad, but as soon as she did, it made her so angry that she wanted to jump out of the bed and take on Dave and Laurent. However, she couldn’t move. Aside from a fractured rib, she had bruises all over her body, meaning she’d have to stay home to recover for a long time.

With a broken rib, she couldn’t use a cast or splints like with other bones; it would have to heal on its own, and the pain would be unbearable.

While simmering in anger and bitterness, her mother, Susan, walked into the room. Seeing Clark in such a pitiful state, as a mother, how could she not feel heartache? 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚

Sighing, she walked over to her daughter and spoke softly,

"Your father and I have discussed it. Once you’re discharged from the hospital, we’re moving away from here."

In light of the current public opinion, they couldn’t stay in Burg Eltz any longer. When Summer and her husband had been handling Clark’s admission earlier, they had overheard many harsh rumors, all criticizing their daughter.

"What? Leave here?"

Clark was so shocked by her mother’s words that she attempted to sit up quickly, but the pain in her body caused her to collapse back onto the bed.

"No! I can’t leave here! I want to stay in Burg Eltz!"

She screamed, protesting to her mother. If she left, how could she seek revenge? How could she continue to watch Dave and Laurent suffer?

Susan’s voice turned cold as she replied,

"Not leaving, do you think we can still survive here? Our whole family is like a rat running across the street. Your father and I don’t even dare to leave the house!"

Clark’s hands tightly gripped the sheets beneath her, swallowing her anger and frustration. Even though she didn’t want to leave, she understood her mother’s words—since the video had gone viral, their family had been in a dire situation.

Now that she had been beaten, the online crowd was relishing her downfall, with no one showing her any sympathy. They all believed she deserved what was happening to her.

But even after accepting this reality, she was unwilling to give up. After all those years, her life had been destroyed by the Washington family. She hated them, and she wanted to kill them!

Susan continued,

"Your father and I have discussed it. We’ll sell the house and take the money back to your father’s hometown. It’s in the countryside, so there shouldn’t be too many people who know about this."

Susan and her husband were both helpless. The news had spread too quickly, and with the internet being so advanced now, they couldn’t survive in a big city. The only way out was to move to a small town.

Susan also didn’t know where she and her husband went wrong in their parenting. They were university professors, and Clark had been a well-behaved and sensible child. But as she grew older, especially after spending years abroad, Clark had become so difficult and rebellious.

Bad luck with the people she encountered.
