Chapter 185-new life

Susan’s thoughts lingered on the fact that maybe the situation had unfolded this way because of bad luck. She remembered when her daughter was with Dave; at that time, she had been quite satisfied with him. Though he wasn’t the most talkative, he was reliable, and she thought they made a good match.

But things took a turn when her daughter insisted on going abroad and met someone like Bert. Susan believed that this was when her daughter started to change. The years spent abroad had left them out of touch with how their daughter was doing—no matter how much they wanted to know, their daughter never opened up to them.

When she finally came back, it was already too late.

The news of her return had spread, and they went to see her at the villa Dave had provided. As far as they were concerned, Dave was married, and their daughter should not have been involved with him, potentially ruining someone else’s family.

But their daughter refused to listen to their advice. She insisted that Dave loved her, which caused them to feel disappointed and leave in anger.

Later, for reasons unknown, their daughter came back alone and said she wanted to start over, to build a new life for herself.

As parents, they were glad to hear this and immediately helped by connecting her with a piano school where she could work as a teacher. But no one could have predicted what happened afterward.

Clark, however, was furious when she heard her mother’s plan to move to the countryside.

"I’m not going! I won’t go to some countryside! How can I live like that?"

Susan didn’t want to argue with her daughter, she just hoped Clark would focus on recovering and get out of there as soon as possible. But Clark’s persistent resistance only made her more upset.

"Did you get yourself into trouble while you were out there? Did you offend someone? Why can’t you calm down? Do you really think you can take on those people?"

"Clark, I haven’t wanted to say this, but that doesn’t mean I don’t know what’s going on."

Susan’s voice trembled as she spoke, and her eyes welled up with tears.

"We only have you, our only daughter. We didn’t expect much from you; we just wanted you to find someone who loves you and live a peaceful, happy life."

"But look at what you’ve done to yourself. Have you ever thought about how we feel? Do you know how much it hurts us?"

Tears finally fell from Susan’s eyes. What mother could bear seeing her child in such pain and suffering without feeling it herself?

Clark’s eyes turned red too, but she quickly looked away, biting her lip in silence.

She, too, had wanted to find someone who loved her, to marry and live a quiet, happy life.

But now, with her body and life in ruins, would any man still want her?

And yet, there was only one man she had ever thought about marrying—Dave.

What should she do? What should she do? What should she do?!

Could she really just give in like this?

Six months later, Laurent and Dave had their first meeting since the incident with their daughter. It was close to the end of the year, and Laurent was visiting Burg Eltz to deliver some New Year’s gifts to Matthew.

Since their daughter’s ordeal, Laurent and Dave hadn’t seen each other at all. Whether Laurent went to Burg Eltz to visit their daughter on weekends or when their daughter was brought to see her, Dave had not appeared once. It was nothing like before, when Dave would always find some excuse to meet Laurent, making it hard for her to avoid him.

Over the past six months, Laurent had been consumed with work. Matthew placed his first order with her, which she successfully handled. Her work attitude, attention to detail, and her ability to coordinate between the factory workshop and various departments impressed Matthew greatly. As a result, Matthew’s orders kept increasing.

Besides Matthew, Laurent had also secured a new client from abroad—a small company founded by a group of young designers passionate about fashion. They had registered the company because of their love for clothing, but being a new and small business, their initial orders were too small for most factories to care about.

However, Laurent decided to take on the orders. The factory workshops were initially reluctant, given the small quantities, but after Laurent worked tirelessly to convince the workshop manager, they agreed to mix the small orders with larger ones.

Laurent believed in the potential of young people—dreamers and go-getters—and thought back to when she had just graduated. If she were in their shoes, she would have appreciated someone offering a helping hand. So, when these young designers approached her, she didn’t refuse them.

She didn’t expect to make much money from their orders; she just wanted to lend a hand. However, she soon realized that many of their designs were impractical in real production. The sample makers would patiently follow their instructions, but once the orders hit the production line, no one had the patience to make the garments with such detailed precision.

Laurent found herself constantly explaining to them, but in doing so, she learned a lot about fashion design herself. The more she worked with them, the more she felt that taking on the order was the right decision. For her, learning something new made it all worth it. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

To her surprise, the small company she had taken on as a client started to flourish. With talented designers, reliable manufacturers, and quality products, their business naturally began to gain recognition. As a result, their orders steadily grew.

The young designers were particularly grateful to Laurent and even invited her to visit their company and hang out with them. Laurent was happy to have made such genuine young friends. Out of kindness, she offered them some honest advice: to maintain their unique and high-quality approach, focusing on limited quantities and innovative designs rather than trying to mass-produce in search of quick profits.

To her delight, after discussing her suggestion, they decided to adopt it. Laurent couldn’t have been more thrilled. The joy of friendship was priceless, and she felt deeply moved by their trust in her.

At this point, she had two major clients: Matthew, who placed numerous orders, resulting in a significant income for her, and the young designers, who had generously raised her commission by two percentage points. Though their orders were small, her earnings were still considerable.

Laurent continued to seek out new clients, and after more than half a year of hard work and growth, she felt confident in her ability to handle any challenge. She was independent, capable, and proud of her progress.

Looking at her life now, Laurent felt content. She had a stable job, good health, living parents, and a lovely daughter.

It was enough.

As for love, she didn’t long for it anymore. She had decided not to think about it. If she didn’t think about it, she wouldn’t yearn for it or miss the happiness of the past.
