Chapter 186: Chapter 186- Strangers

Since Matthew was now her biggest client, as the year-end approached, she brought some local specialties processed by Cassy to give to Matthew. At the same time, she arranged to have dinner with Vivian.

After arriving at the restaurant where she had agreed to meet Vivian, she parked her car and walked inside. She had recently bought a car for herself, an ordinary family sedan , which finally made traveling more convenient.

Just as she reached the entrance of the restaurant, someone happened to be walking out. When Laurent looked up, she was surprised to see Tiffany and an older woman. Behind them were Dave and a young girl.

To an outsider, the scene was unmistakably a matchmaking dinner.

Two mothers, the prospective groom, and the prospective bride.

Laurent hadn’t expected to run into them in a place like this, and it was clear they hadn’t expected to see her either—they all froze for a moment.

Laurent thought it would be best to pretend she didn’t know them in this situation, so she lowered her head and prepared to walk past them.

But Tiffany called out to her.

"Laurent!"

Tiffany’s expression looked a bit awkward as she quickly walked over, pulling Laurent aside and explaining in a low voice,

"Don’t misunderstand. I’m not trying to set him up with someone. I was just having dinner with a friend, and Dave came to pick me up..."

Tiffany was genuinely embarrassed. From an outsider’s perspective, the four of them did look exactly like they were at a matchmaking dinner.

However, Tiffany had never intended to set up her son with someone or arrange a matchmaking session for him. She knew that his heart was still with Laurent and that he would never agree to be with another woman.

Tiffany was fond of Laurent as a daughter-in-law and was satisfied with her. What she wished for most was for her son and Laurent to reconcile. Unlike other mothers who, upon seeing their son get divorced, would eagerly hope for a quick remarriage, Tiffany was never in a hurry. Even though her son and Laurent had almost no contact over the past six months, she remained patient.

Fate would bring them back together if it was meant to be.

Today, her son had simply stopped by to pick her up on his way, as they planned to go together to the kindergarten to pick up Emma. When he arrived, she hadn’t finished chatting with her friend yet, so he waited for them for a while.

Her friend had brought her daughter along, which led to the current scene of the four of them together.

It was evident that her friend’s daughter had taken a liking to her son. While he was waiting, she kept talking to him. Out of politeness, he responded briefly, but Tiffany was certain—her son had absolutely no feelings for her.

He could never have feelings for another woman.

Although he hadn’t reached out to Laurent or tried to pester her over the past six months, he actually knew everything about her. Every time Emma returned from Laurent’s place, he would ask all sorts of questions—what Laurent ate, what she did, whether she was in a good mood.

He knew she was doing well at work. He knew she had just bought a new car. He knew she had caught a cold a few days ago. He knew she had just returned from a business trip.

He knew everything about her.

The so-called letting go and breaking off contact were nothing more than appearances. Deep down, he had never truly let go.

However, after hearing Tiffany’s explanation, Laurent didn’t show much emotion. She simply smiled faintly.

"You don’t need to explain to me. Everyone has the right to pursue happiness."

For the past six months, Laurent had hardly thought about Dave at all. It was as if all the deep love she once had for him had been frozen and sealed away after that last incident.

She admitted that the psychological trauma from nearly losing her daughter last time was too great—so great that she avoided thinking about Dave altogether because the mere thought of him filled her with fear and unease.

Another reason was that her work kept her overwhelmingly busy. She simply had no time left to think about love and relationships.

So when she ran into him here today, there was a brief moment of confusion—as if she had forgotten that he was the father of her daughter, forgotten that he was once the man she had loved so passionately.

Strangers.

Nothing but strangers.

Tiffany felt frustrated after hearing Laurent’s response. Could she really not explain things to her? If she didn’t, her son would just give her that sullen look later and blame her again—saying it was her fault for making him come pick her up and causing this misunderstanding.

She wanted to say more, but Laurent glanced at her watch.

"Sorry, Tiffany. I have an appointment with a friend. We’ll talk next time." 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺

Then she stepped past Tiffany and headed into the restaurant.

Throughout Tiffany and Laurent’s entire conversation, the girl standing next to Dave kept talking to him. However, he didn’t hear a single word she said.

His mind was completely occupied with Laurent.

He kept stealing glances at her—just a quick look, then another—as if trying to appear casual and indifferent. He couldn’t let his gaze linger too long, afraid that she would notice.

Strictly speaking, this was the first time in six months that they had come face-to-face. Or perhaps not.

Many times, when the driver from Burg Eltz picked up or dropped off their daughter, he had gone along too—only he never got out of the car.

He had just sat there, watching from a distance as she walked their daughter out, as she handed her over to the driver.

And many times, when she visited Burg Eltz to see their daughter or take her home, he had been upstairs, watching.

She simply never knew.
