Chapter 239: Chapter 239- This was perfect

To be honest, he didn’t want to apply it himself. The stuff was sticky and uncomfortable in his hands. He had originally hoped she would help him.

But given the current atmosphere, it was impossible to ask her to help now. If he refused to apply it, he would probably get kicked off the car.

Resigned, he opened the sunscreen bottle and struggled to squeeze the lotion out, applying it to his body. Meanwhile, he grumbled inwardly, wondering what kind of situation this was. He’d come out on a trip, and yet here they were, fighting over whether or not to apply sunscreen, stuck on the road.

Laurent kept her head turned, ignoring him and gazing out the window. However, she was listening closely to every movement he made.

When she heard him open the sunscreen bottle and start applying it, her anger finally dissipated somewhat. Just as she was about to turn around and help him, she heard him speak softly again:

"I’ve always thought we both had good tempers, so I never understood why Emma could be so headstrong sometimes. Now I finally get it."

Laurent was furious. She turned her head and protested,

"Dave, what do you mean by that? Are you implying that Emma’s stubbornness comes from me?"

Only someone as scheming as him could phrase things like this—talking about their good temper, about Emma being headstrong, all indirectly suggesting that she was to blame!

But before she could get really angry, she couldn’t help but laugh when she saw his current state.

Wasn’t Dave supposed to be applying sunscreen? This stuff was thick, and after applying it, it needed to be evenly spread and gently patted in to absorb properly. But as a grown man, how was he supposed to know that? He had just squeezed it out and slathered it all over his exposed arms and legs, making a mess. Both his arms and legs were covered in white streaks, with patches here and there.

Thank goodness he hadn’t started on his face, or it would’ve been laughable.

Seeing Laurent suddenly shift from anger to laughter, Dave was confused and asked,

"What’s wrong?"

Laurent didn’t respond. Resigned, she stepped forward, grabbed his arm, and started rubbing the sunscreen in, gently patting it to help it absorb.

He was going to make her lose her mind with his clumsiness!

If he kept applying it like that and they went for water sports, people would surely laugh at him. And that would mean they were laughing at her too. She definitely didn’t want to embarrass herself by being seen with him.

When Dave saw that she was finally paying attention to him, a huge weight lifted off his chest. He relaxed back into his seat and let her gently rub in the sunscreen. Meanwhile, he kept his gaze fixed on her beautiful little face.

This was perfect.

It was always better when they were calm and getting along peacefully.

Laurent noticed that Dave kept staring at her, so she unconsciously applied more pressure and gave him a few firm slaps. He winced in pain and protested,

"Is this domestic violence?"

Laurent casually replied,

"We’re not even a family. How could it be domestic violence?"

Her words struck Dave deeply. The simple sentence, "We’re not a family," made him feel like he was suddenly frozen, from head to toe, despite being in the tropics.

In truth, Laurent hadn’t meant to hurt him. She had just continued his train of thought.

She also noticed his sudden disappointment. As she had finished helping him, she sat back in her seat and said,

"Alright, let’s go. Hurry up and start driving."

Though Dave was feeling a bit down, he didn’t say anything further. He fastened his seatbelt and started driving again.

The entire drive was quiet, neither of them bringing up the "we’re not a family" conversation. Laurent didn’t mention it because she didn’t know how to approach it, while Dave didn’t bring it up because he was quietly thinking about what to write.

When they arrived at the water sports area, Laurent was immediately captivated by the beautiful scenery.

The gem-blue sea was crystal clear in the shallower areas along the shore, so clear that you could see the sand and seashells at the bottom. It was so beautiful that it made her eager to dive into the embrace of the blue ocean.

Dave was talking to the people running the water sports, and Laurent overheard him introducing her as his "wife," which made her glare at him. Who’s his wife? She’s his "ex"wife, for crying out loud!

Dave caught her gaze, glanced back at her, then led the person further away and continued speaking. Now that Laurent was farther from them, she couldn’t hear what they were saying.

But Laurent didn’t care what they were talking about. She just wanted to jump into the beautiful, clear ocean and enjoy herself.

It was simply breathtaking, and it filled her with peace and joy. All the little misunderstandings between her and Dave seemed to vanish in the face of such a stunning view.

Soon, after finishing his conversation with the person, Dave walked back with him. The other man looked at Laurent with a curious, almost strange smile, which made Laurent feel quite embarrassed.

"Is there something on my face, or is there something wrong with me? Why is that person staring at me?"

Dave laughed and pulled her into an embrace.

"No, you’re just overthinking it."

Saipan offered a wide variety of exciting water sports, and Laurent, who was naturally energetic and bold, immediately chose a parasailing adventure. Together with Dave, they soared high into the sky and then plunged into the sea. Laurent was thrilled, continuously screaming and cheering. What she didn’t know was that Dave, behind her, was scared out of his mind.

Later, she chose other exciting and wild activities like jet skis and banana boats. They were thrilling, and though Dave found them a bit too extreme, he let her enjoy herself.

The final activity they chose was snorkeling, which was more to Dave’s liking.

As a man in his thirties, he preferred the quieter activities.

Laurent, on the other hand, was still excited and loved snorkeling.

After getting their equipment on, they went into the water. Dave, armed with an underwater camera, was responsible for taking photos of Laurent. Laurent didn’t care much about the photos; what she really cared about was the beautiful scenery she could see with her own eyes. The vibrant coral and colorful little fish swimming in front of her were mesmerizing, and she couldn’t help but reach out to touch them.

However, just as she was enjoying the underwater world, Dave, who had been photographing her, suddenly looked pained, clutching his chest. Laurent was shocked and quickly swam over to him, asking with her eyes what was wrong. His expression grew increasingly distressed, and Laurent, now panicked, gripped him tightly. She then pulled her head out of the water, threw her snorkel aside, and screamed for help.

They had taken a speedboat to a deeper area of the sea specifically for snorkeling. The boat wasn’t far, and upon hearing her cry for help, the crew on the boat rushed over immediately. Together, they helped lift Dave onto the boat and laid him down.

Laurent swam up to Dave, shouting,

"Dave?"

"What happened? Don’t scare me like this!"

Laurent was on the verge of tears. Someone nearby asked her in Japanese if Dave had any previous health issues, to which Laurent, in a panic, shook her head and answered hurriedly,

"No, no, he’s perfectly healthy. He’s always been in good health."

Laurent didn’t understand what had caused Dave to suddenly collapse like this. The boat crew made an emergency call and increased the speed, heading toward the shore.

Laurent looked at Dave, lying motionless on the boat, and tears instantly streamed down her face.

Confusion, fear, and heartache overwhelmed her, filling her entire heart.
