Chapter 305: Chapter 305-argue

"Laurent!"

Dave couldn’t hold back anymore. As soon as Laurent finished speaking, he shouted through gritted teeth,

"Do I even matter to you anymore, Laurent? Is your job—your career—the only thing you care about now?"

Laurent hadn’t explicitly said she wanted to go, but the fact that she had brought it up to discuss with him meant she did. If she didn’t want to go, she would have rejected Matthew outright when he first mentioned it. There would have been no need to come to Dave to talk it through.

Dave was furious—boiling with anger, heartache, and bitter disappointment.

After everything they’d been through this past year, they had finally reached some kind of stability. He had been planning to propose again, to remarry her, to give their little family of three the quiet, legitimate life they deserved. And now she drops this on him—a potential relocation to another city for an entire year.

A whole year. Not a month, not two.

If it were just a month or two, he could barely swallow it. He wasn’t unreasonable—he knew how important her career was to her right now. But a year? That he couldn’t accept.

One year. 365 days. That meant they’d be living apart, in separate cities, for all 365 of them.

What’s more, A.T. was nowhere near Burg Eltz. Even driving on the highway the entire way, it would take over two hours.

If it were a nearby town—say, a city just forty minutes away—he could accept that. He’d just drive back and forth every day if he had to.

But over two hours one way? The round trip would be exhausting.

Seeing how angry he was, Laurent grew uneasy and quickly moved closer to comfort him.

"Hey, don’t be so mad. That’s why I’m talking it over with you, isn’t it?"

Dave scoffed coldly.

"And if I say no, that I don’t want you to go, would you really not go?"

Laurent tried again, cautiously.

"I was thinking... since you’re not working right now, maybe you could come with me to A.T..."

She knew Dave wouldn’t stay unemployed forever. His time off was just a way to be with her and their daughter more—to make up for all the time he’d missed.

With his capabilities, he could easily land a job that paid several times more than hers. He didn’t need her to be the breadwinner.

As far as she knew, Morrison had approached him more than once during this time, offering to partner with him on several projects under his own name. Dave had turned every offer down.

Laurent thought: maybe during the year she would be stationed in A.T., he could keep not working—just for a while. Maybe, for her, he could... sacrifice a little. That way, they wouldn’t have to live apart long-term. It’s not like they were strapped for money now anyway. Matthew had already said that if she took the assignment, her salary would double. She’d also get a fifty percent share of the division’s performance bonus.

She really wanted to go. She truly wanted to seize this opportunity—to grow, to sharpen herself.

Dave’s voice cut through her thoughts, sharp and bitter.

"Do you honestly think I’m going to sit around unemployed for the rest of my life?"

Dave’s anger only burned hotter. She’d clearly already thought through this whole plan about him not working and moving with her—she must really want to go.

Laurent quickly denied it.

"Of course I didn’t mean it like that. Someone as talented and capable as you not working would be a huge loss to society. I was just hoping... maybe for this one year, you could support me a little..."

She leaned into his chest, softening her tone and clinging to him sweetly, even throwing in a few compliments—anything to calm him down and ease his temper.

It worked—somewhat. But not enough.

"Fine," Dave said, "let’s say I agree to go with you to A.T. What about our daughter? What about Emma? Are you really okay with separating from her for a whole year? Do you realize she’s already spent the past six months living with my mom like she’s in a single-parent home?"

His voice was heavy, filled with accusation. Laurent pressed her lips together and said nothing.

She knew. Of course she knew. And it hurt her too.

When she considered accepting the year-long assignment in A.T., she had already thought about all of this. She lifted her eyes and softly offered a suggestion.

"If... if it really comes to that, then maybe Emma can come with us too. She’s still in kindergarten. It’s not like she has any real school obligations yet—it doesn’t matter where she attends."

Dave gave a cold snort above her head.

"Laurent. You’re really something. For your career, you want our whole family to uproot everything and follow you?"

Even after this long back-and-forth, Dave still couldn’t accept Laurent’s decision.

There was something deeper—something he couldn’t quite articulate—that made him feel like the moment she prioritized her career so firmly, it meant he and their family didn’t matter as much to her anymore. That thought alone made it impossible for him to rationally accept her choice.

And it wasn’t just that he was currently out of work, free enough to go with her to A.T.

The timing was cruel.

Bert had come to him today—come to him personally—and begged for help. That changed everything. It meant Dave could no longer turn a blind eye to the current state of Washington Co.

The only reason he had distanced himself from the company, had walked away without a word, was to spite Bert. To make him squirm. To let him choke on the consequences of his reckless decision to take over Washington Co. Now that Bert had finally felt the pressure and come crawling back, Dave couldn’t keep pretending he didn’t care.

Now that Bert had finally humbled himself and come asking for help, Dave felt that the resentment he’d been holding onto had finally been released.

Washington Co. was, after all, still his responsibility.

Besides, Daniel had called him earlier that morning, indirectly hinting that Bert probably wouldn’t last much longer. It was only a matter of time before he gave up on Washington Co., and when that happened, Dave would have to return to take over.

In other words, all this chaos had really just been a lesson—a brutal but necessary reality check for Bert. A reminder that what he had been given—what Daniel had entrusted to him—was already the best he could hope for.

So now, with Laurent bringing up this year-long transfer just as he was preparing to step back into the company, how could he possibly go with her to A.T.?

Separation would be inevitable.

And the thought of her—a young, beautiful woman—living alone in a new city for an entire year... how could he possibly be at ease?

If he was being honest with himself, that was the real issue.

He was afraid she might meet someone better there. Afraid she might realize she had better options.

Afraid that once she flew free—truly free—she might never come back.

They stood in silence for a long moment.

Then Laurent stepped back from his arms, looked up at him with quiet determination, and said,

"I want your support. I admit, ever since the divorce, I’ve focused more on my career. But that doesn’t mean I don’t care about you or this family. If I truly didn’t care, I wouldn’t be standing here asking you—I would’ve already told Matthew I was going."

Dave felt the fire rise in him again, wave after wave. But he forced himself to stay calm, to not let the fight escalate any further.

He just shot her a fierce glare, grabbed his coat, and turned to leave.

But at the door, he hesitated. Then, as if unable to hold back, he threw one last line at her:

"Well, I’m telling you now—I’m not okay with you going!"

Then he slammed the door behind him.

Laurent, fuming, dropped onto the couch and sat there in silence—furious, but trying to collect herself.
