Chapter 306: Chapter 306- Childish

He was angry—well, so was she.

He had already made it. Why couldn’t he support her just this once? Let her become stronger, better, more accomplished—so that when she stood beside him, she could do so with confidence and pride.

She worked this hard not just to chase her own sense of purpose, but also... to be worthy of him.

If he were just an ordinary man, maybe things would be easier. But he wasn’t. He was the former lord of Washington Co.—a man dazzling, brilliant, unmatched in his time.

They each had their own thoughts, their own pride. And in the end, it had led to nothing but a fight and a slammed door.

Their daughter was still napping. Laurent had no interest in resting; her chest was burning with frustration, so she turned to the group chat with Vivian and the others to vent.

Vivian, upon hearing the reason behind the fight, was quick to take her side—gleefully so:

"Go, just go. Hell, stay a few years! Let him suffer! Ha!"

Vivian was always that kind of friend—loud-mouthed and savage, especially when it came to teasing Dave.

Marylin, on the other hand, was more scornful:

"Childish! The more he storms off like that, the less likely you are to give in. If he had pleaded with you, softened his tone, begged you not to go—you might’ve actually wavered. But going hard like this? Just proves he still doesn’t get you."

Laurent couldn’t agree more. She was exactly that kind of person—resistant to force, but susceptible to gentleness.

It was just like during their divorce. The more he fought her, the more resolute she became in leaving.

Then Marylin sighed dramatically:

"Ugh, I wish I could teach that big boss of Washington a trick or two to actually make you stay."

Laurent snapped:

"Don’t you dare!"

The more she thought about Dave slamming that door, the angrier she got. She was furious. So furious that she was just about ready to call Matthew and say—

She’d decided. She was going.

When Matthew brought up the matter to her after work yesterday, her first response was to tell him she needed to go back and discuss it with Dave. However, the discussion ended in anger, leaving them both at an impasse.

It was Zoey, though, who calmly helped Laurent analyze the situation:

"Laurent, have you asked him why he doesn’t want you to go?"

Laurent, frustrated, replied:

"Who knows? Maybe he just can’t stand seeing me do well."

Zoey pressed on:

"Could it be that he’s afraid, with the long-distance situation, you’ll meet someone better and leave him?"

Laurent couldn’t believe what she was hearing:

"No way. All these years, my heart has only been with him. He knows that."

"If I could fall for someone else, I would have during the time we were separated—when he broke my heart and we divorced."

Vivian, chiming in at that moment, couldn’t resist:

"Hahahaha, I’ve heard A.T. is full of handsome guys—like Zhuo Tingfeng. He must be afraid you’ll fall for someone like that."

Laurent rolled her eyes and sent Vivian a sarcastic emoji:

"They’re all married, okay?"

Marylin also agreed with Zoey’s analysis:

"The truth is, even though you’ve only ever cared about him, in reality, he’s probably worried about you being in another city. You’re young, beautiful, and successful—there’s no guarantee some man won’t try to take advantage of that."

Zoey then offered a suggestion:

"What if you tried talking to him about getting remarried before you go to A.T.? See if he’ll compromise."

After hearing Zoey and Marylin’s advice, Laurent realized they made a good point. She had been a bit impulsive earlier, not considering the possibility that Dave might be worried about losing her if she went. If that was the case, then they could get remarried first.

She decided to wait until they had both cooled down, and then talk to him calmly, maybe bring up the idea of remarriage.

With this new clarity in her mind, she felt a little more at ease and took a nap with her daughter.

However, when she woke up, she found that Dave still hadn’t returned. And not only had he not come back, but he’d left her a note:

"To show my unwillingness to compromise, I’ve decided to leave home. You don’t need to worry about where I am or my safety. I’ll send you a message every day to let you know I’m okay. When you decide not to go to A.T., I will return."

The note was signed with his elaborate signature.

Laurent squeezed the paper in her hand, almost furious enough to explode. She got up and checked the luggage, only to find that his suitcase was gone. His personal belongings were also missing. It seemed like he was seriously planning to run away, using this dramatic gesture to force her to give up going to A.T.

What had briefly been a calm mood erupted in anger once again. She grabbed her phone and called Matthew to tell him she would accept the assignment to A.T. for a year.

If Dave hadn’t acted so immaturely and run away, she might have been able to compromise. But now that he had left, Laurent was absolutely furious, and she was more determined than ever to go.

Matthew confirmed with her once again:

"Does the lord of Washington approve?"

Matthew had made this arrangement with the idea of nurturing Laurent. Among all the employees at the company, she was one of the most outstanding in every regard, so Matthew thought this opportunity would help her grow and elevate her position.

Of course, Matthew also took Dave’s feelings into account, which is why he’d agreed to let Laurent talk to Dave first. If Laurent ultimately decided against going to A.T., Matthew wouldn’t push her, as he didn’t want to be the one to ruin someone’s family.

Now that Laurent had made up her mind, Matthew asked again about Dave’s opinion.

"He agrees. What can he say?"

Laurent, holding back her anger, replied to Matthew. It was no longer a matter of negotiating with Dave—his attitude had pushed her to the point where she had to go.

With that said, Matthew didn’t press further. He had hoped for this outcome, so he simply said:

"Alright, I understand. I’ll start making the arrangements."

After finishing her call with Matthew, Laurent’s daughter woke up. She looked around the room but couldn’t find Dave, and asked curiously, "Where’s daddy?"

Laurent didn’t want her daughter to be affected by the tension between her and Dave, so she lied, "Daddy had to leave for a sudden matter. Let’s play here, okay?"

The little girl didn’t seem to have any other emotions and nodded in agreement.

While Laurent was napping with her daughter, Dave had quietly packed his things and left. After leaving the villa, he drove off. He was still angry and resentful, but didn’t want to argue with Laurent. Instead, he chose to leave home in this dramatic way.

However, once he was out, he didn’t know where to go. He thought about it for a while, and eventually, he headed straight to Laurent’s parents’ house. He felt the need to speak to his in-laws and get their perspective—why was Laurent, a woman, so determined to be assigned to another city for a year?

That afternoon, Laurent’s parents were surprised when Dave showed up at their door, dragging his suitcase. Alex, seeing that only Dave had come, asked, "Where are Laurent and Emma?"

Had this brat gotten so used to coming to their house alone?

Dave didn’t say anything, just silently carried his luggage inside.

When Cassy heard the noise, she came out too. Seeing that Laurent and Emma weren’t there, she looked at Dave’s expression and, sensing something was off, cautiously asked, "You two... had an argument?"

It wasn’t hard for Cassy to guess. Dave’s face was clearly full of the grievances he felt and the desire for someone to take his side.

Hearing her question, Dave finally spoke, "Yes."

Alex and Cassy exchanged a glance. Alex, not in the mood for patience, grumbled, "You two argue, and you come here for what? We’re not getting involved in your issues."
