You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 77- refuse
Based on Laurent’s understanding of Dave, someone like him who struggles with his own life, how could he possibly take care of a daughter?
When Laurent was about to start cooking, he carefully picked up the little girl, afraid that the oil might splatter on her.
Her phone rang just then, and she casually picked it up.
It was a message from Dave:
"What’s good to eat there?"
Laurent sneered as he read it, then placed the phone back in the cabinet and returned to the kitchen to continue cooking.
If she remembered correctly, during their first year of marriage, when they visited her parents for the New Year, she had introduced him to the local specialty foods.
She had given a very detailed introduction, not just about the food, but also about the interesting places in the city and some intriguing aspects of its culture.
She wanted him to get to know the city where she grew up better, and by extension, to know her better.
Scenic views, delicious food, and beautiful women—she had introduced them all to him.
The beautiful woman referred to, of course, was herself.
At that time, she had the nerve to call herself a beauty.
It was his first time visiting her home, and she had insisted on showing him all her childhood photos from her room, explaining each one in detail.
She knew she must have been very talkative back then, but she was just eager for him to understand her, eager for him to... like her.
He had seemed uninterested, and eventually, her rambling reached a point where he couldn’t take it anymore. He pushed her onto the large bed, saying that if he wanted to truly get to know her, he didn’t need to look at the photos—this was enough.
Then, he kissed her and lifted her clothes.
She married him in August, having just graduated from university in July, and got married to him in August.
Afterward, she had a miscarriage and spent several months recuperating. The visit during the New Year seemed to be their first time together since she had recovered.
They spent the entire afternoon in the room. By the end, she was so exhausted she could hardly move, but seeing how thoroughly satisfied he was, she felt it was worth it.
When she had once introduced everything to him in such detail and with such care, he hadn’t paid much attention. Now, when he asked her about the city’s food again, how could she bring herself to tell him?
After sending the message, Dave, in the hotel, waited for a long time without receiving any response from Laurent. He sarcastically put away his phone and went downstairs to the hotel restaurant for dinner.
He knew that asking about the food wasn’t the best way to start a conversation, but he couldn’t think of any better topic to text her about, so he ended up sending that message.
His real intention was simply to get a reply, and then use the opportunity to invite her to dinner in the evening, bringing her daughter along.
But since she didn’t respond, he had no choice but to go have dinner alone.
Every time he had visited before, her parents had treated him to a warm and generous meal. He hadn’t expected that one day, he would be in the situation he was now.
He should say it was more like being cold-shouldered—staying in a hotel alone, eating dinner alone.
After ordering his meal and waiting, Clark called him.
Given his current mood, he wasn’t very inclined to answer the phone.
However, after hesitating for a while, he finally answered the call. Clark’s voice came softly from the other end.
"Dave, can you come over tonight?"
Before he could respond, Clark hurriedly continued,
"My parents came to visit me today, and they—"
Clark’s tone grew quite melancholic at this point.
"They said they were very disappointed in me..."
Because of the intimate photos of him with Clark that had been exposed a few days ago, Clark’s parents had found out that Clark had returned to the country. Even though the photos were of a blurry figure, others might not have recognized Clark, but his parents certainly could.
So, they came to find him and asked about Clark’s whereabouts.
He told them where Clark was recuperating but said nothing more.
As for Clark’s physical and mental condition, it was better for Clark himself to tell them.
Now, hearing Clark say this, it was clear that they must have met today.
He tried to organize his words carefully.
"So, for your parents’ sake, you should get better soon."
Clark sounded very distressed, even choking on his words.
"Dave, can you come over? I feel so, so awful. I used to be my parents’ pride, but now I’ve become like this... I really don’t want to live anymore."
Facing Clark’s sobs, Dave suddenly felt irritated.
Some women, you want to see them cry and show weakness, but they refuse to cry, stubborn to the point that it makes your teeth itch with frustration.
Other women, you want them to be stronger, but they’re constantly crying.
Clark was the latter, and a certain woman was the former.
For some inexplicable reason, he thought of Laurent, and his frustration grew even more.
"I’m out of town, can’t come back. Don’t overthink it. Just get some sleep," Dave said curtly.
But Clark wouldn’t hang up the phone.
"Dave, please don’t leave me alone. I’m really scared. I’m afraid Bert will find me. I’m afraid one day, I’ll go mad and torture myself to death."
"Clark!"
Dave’s voice turned cold, and Clark was startled. There was a long silence on the other end before Clark started crying softly.
"Last time, in Japan, you rushed back to see me..."
If Clark hadn’t mentioned the incident in Japan, Dave might have still had the patience to comfort her. However, the moment she brought up how he rushed back to Japan, it hit a nerve. Dave, angry, hung up the phone immediately.
Dave wasn’t someone with a particularly good temper or patience. When he was with Clark before, she had complained about his bad temper, how cold and harsh he could be. They would sometimes have arguments, and he never apologized or tried to make up with her. Most of the time, it was Clark who would make the first move to reconcile, or they would just continue the silent treatment until one day when they spoke again.
The reason Dave was so upset when Clark brought up Japan was that, after that incident, once he had calmed down, he realized that leaving Laurent and her daughter behind in Japan like that was a bit too much.
But he was too proud to admit it. Now that Clark had brought it up, of course, he was angry. For someone as proud as him, being reminded that he had made a big mistake didn’t sit well.
Clark continued to call afterward, but Dave didn’t answer.
This was the first time since Clark had returned to the country that Dave had refused to take Clark’s call.
