You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 78- We don’t welcome you
The next morning, at Laurent’s house.
The little girl, perhaps because she hadn’t seen Laurent in a long time and hadn’t visited her grandparents’ house for a while, had been in an excited state all night. She didn’t fall asleep until almost midnight.
Laurent, too, was exhausted from her antics, so the two of them were still snuggled up in bed, sweetly sleeping.
Laurent’s phone on the bedside table buzzed. She groggily reached for it, answered the call, and heard someone on the other end, sounding completely awake, asking,
"Where are you guys going today? I’ll come pick you up."
As soon as Laurent heard his voice, she was annoyed. She opened her eyes and looked at the clock on the wall—it was only seven o’clock.
She was immediately furious, and with the added frustration of waking up after a bad night’s sleep, she couldn’t hold back and yelled,
"Dave, can’t you understand what I’m saying? I told you we’re not going anywhere, we’re staying at home. Can you stop calling and bothering me over and over again?"
She thought with such a harsh tone, Dave would surely hang up the phone in anger.
He was the type of person who couldn’t tolerate being yelled at, only doing the yelling himself.
But instead of hanging up, he continued talking.
"You want to stay home, but that doesn’t mean your daughter wants to stay home. Don’t you know that kids love to play?"
Laurent didn’t understand what had gotten into him, why he was so relentless.
But since he wanted to make things difficult for himself, she would indulge him.
She stopped yelling, took a moment to calm down, and then said,
"You know, I almost forgot. Emma really liked the park near us the last time she came. Her grandfather said he’s taking her there today. Since you have time, why don’t you come pick them up?"
In fact, the daughter never said she wanted to go out to play. Laurent only used the trick of saying her father would go with them, hoping that it would make Dave back off and stop bothering them.
Last time, her father had hit him with a leek several times, and now, he probably had some psychological trauma at the thought of seeing him again. She figured that if he heard her father was going, he would definitely back off.
Sure enough, as soon as he heard that Emma’s grandfather was taking her out, he fell silent on the other end.
She felt relieved, glad that she could finally get rid of him.
"Goodbye."
But he wasn’t giving up, continuing to ask,
"Aren’t you going too?"
She casually replied,
"I’ve got other things to do, so I won’t be going."
Then she hung up the phone and snuggled back into bed with her daughter to continue sleeping. Now, surely he wouldn’t bother them again.
She dozed off with her daughter for a while, but then her mother’s knock on the door woke her up. Her mother hurriedly walked in.
"Laurent, Dave is here. He says you told him Emma is going to the park with her grandfather today, and you asked him to come pick them up?"
Laurent, "..."
She had only hoped to use that excuse to get him to back off, but he took it seriously? Didn’t he fear her father might beat him up again?
It seemed like he was seriously out of his mind.
Laurent irritably raised her hand to tug at her hair and asked her mother,
"Where is he now?"
"He’s waiting outside. Your dad won’t let him in."
Cassy was also helpless.
Laurent got out of bed, dressed, and walked to the window. She lifted the blinds slightly and looked out. Sure enough, Dave was leaning against the car, smoking a cigarette.
Laurent turned angrily and stepped away from the window, thinking to herself that he must not care about his lungs, smoking so early in the morning.
Then she thought, well, he could smoke if he wanted to—what did it have to do with her?
As soon as she stepped out of the bedroom, her father approached her.
"You want me to take Emma and go to the park with him today?"
Laurent was already wondering how to explain this to her father. He disliked Dave so much; he was annoyed just by seeing him. There was no way he’d want to take their daughter out with him.
But before she could figure out how to explain, to her surprise, her father agreed with enthusiasm.
"Sure, I’ll go. I actually have some things to say to him."
Laurent immediately felt alarm bells ringing in her head.
"Dad, please don’t be so rough with him!"
Alex chuckled.
"Of course not. Do you think I’m really so ill-mannered that I’d hit him every time I see him?"
What Alex really needed to do was have a clear conversation with Dave—specifically, since they were divorced, Dave shouldn’t be coming around so often. He hadn’t been coming this frequently before they were divorced.
He woke up the little girl, got her washed up, and had breakfast.
The little girl was very happy to hear they were going out, especially since her dad was coming too.
After breakfast, she eagerly left with her grandfather. She had wanted to drag Laurent along too, but Laurent didn’t want to interact with Dave, so she told the little girl she had to go to work soon and had a lot of things to prepare. That managed to distract her.
Dave had been waiting outside. While the little girl was getting ready and having breakfast, Laurent went out and called him over once, courteously but distantly inviting him to sit inside. It didn’t seem right to have him wait outside the whole time.
But he didn’t come in. Laurent figured, given his pride, he probably couldn’t stand the cold reception from her father once he stepped inside.
She called him, but he didn’t come in. Her task was done, so she turned around to go back inside. But he stopped her and, frustrated, asked,
"You really aren’t going?"
"I have work tomorrow, and there’s a lot to prepare."
Laurent casually threw the excuse at him before heading back inside.
Dave was incredibly frustrated.
He hadn’t expected her to be so heartless. He thought she was just saying she wouldn’t go, but she really wasn’t going.
Had he known, he wouldn’t have come. Dealing with her father was bound to be awkward, and he feared that in just a few sentences, he wouldn’t know how to handle him.
However, since he was already there, he had no choice but to bite the bullet and drive to the park with his daughter and Alex.
The little girl went to ride the carousel, and the two men waited nearby.
Taking advantage of the moment when the little girl was not around, Alex put on a serious expression and said to Dave,
"The reason I agreed to come out today is that I have a few things I need to say to you."
Dave looked at Alex. He knew that Alex had an agenda for coming out today.
Alex’s expression was very serious.
"Now that you’re divorced, don’t come back here anymore. We don’t welcome you."
Alex got straight to the point.
"Also, your repeated visits are causing disruption to Laurent’s life. To be honest, her mother and I are already planning to have someone introduce a new partner to her once her work settles down."
When Dave heard the mention of introducing a partner, a sour feeling immediately crept into his heart.
He couldn’t imagine her falling into another man’s arms.
He couldn’t imagine her playful, lively, or teasingly scolding expressions being directed at someone else from now on.
Most of all, he couldn’t imagine her having children and growing old with another man.
