Chapter 62: Free fall

In the end, Vanessa could only assume that Terry’s trait did something about that... she didn’t know the details, though, since her own trait was very different from it.

Vanessa possessed a remarkable trait that set her apart from others: the ability to manipulate the air itself with very little mana. She could command the very elements with a mere thought, bending the air to her will. But her power didn’t stop there—she had honed her control to an extraordinary degree, transforming the atmosphere into crackling bolts of lightning.

As Vanessa focused her thoughts, a surge of energy could course through her body. By reaching out with her mind, connecting with the air molecules surrounding her. With a swift motion of her thoughts, she directed the airflow, guiding it through a series of intricate movements. As the air swirled and condensed, a charge built up, giving birth to electrical energy.

In an awe-inspiring display, the air around Vanessa crackled with raw power, forming luminous tendrils of lightning. They danced and weaved in response to her commands, displaying a mesmerizing combination of beauty and danger.

In any case, as the airplane soared through the skies, its engines humming with a steady rhythm, the anticipation among the passengers and crew grew. They were nearing their destination, a crucial point in their mission. But suddenly, without warning, chaos erupted in the air.

Fireballs, blazing orbs of destructive fury, materialized and were fired and hurtled toward the unsuspecting aircraft. They streaked through the atmosphere with a deafening roar, leaving trails of fiery brilliance in their wake. The passengers and crew watched in shock as the deadly projectiles closed in with frightening speed.

Panic gripped the cabin as the pilots maneuvered the plane, desperately trying to evade the incoming fireballs. The passengers, strapped into their seats, braced themselves for the impacts, their hearts pounding in their chests.

"What the hell is going on?" Terry asked.

"The fire drakes advanced more than we had expected," Louis said once he left the pilot’s cabin. "They are trying to knock down the airplane... we won’t be able to get to the airport like this. You will have to jump and then regroup with the others."

Terry and Vanessa looked at each other... that was insane; they would be sitting ducks once they used the parachutes. Still, the airplane was trembling more and more, so they didn’t have any other choice.

"Let’s go; I can deal with the enemies in the air," Vanessa declared while she was putting on her parachute.

Terry only brought his Icicle Bow with him, but he didn’t think that it would be enough agaisnt those fuckers, but it was better than nothing.

Before long, the group was ready to jump, and they moved to the back of the airplane. Once the compartment was open, they saw themselves flying above a large city in flames.

As Terry peered out of the airplane exist, his gaze fixed upon the city below, his heart grew cold. What once stood as a bustling metropolis that survived until now lay engulfed in a relentless sea of flames. The destructive inferno consumed everything in its path, reducing towering buildings to mere skeletal structures and casting an ominous glow upon the darkened sky.

Thick plumes of smoke billowed upward, obscuring the once-vibrant streets from view. The crackling of the fire and the distant sounds of chaos echoed through the air, creating an eerie symphony of destruction. Flames danced voraciously, licking at the remnants of what had once been a thriving urban landscape.

The city’s streets, once teeming with life, were now barren and desolate, save for the occasional flicker of movement amidst the turmoil. The fiery tendrils seemed to devour everything in their reach, swallowing homes, businesses, and memories whole. The city’s heartbeat had been silenced, replaced by the crackling flames and the anguished cries of its inhabitants.

"Once we jump, count to ten and then use the parachutes," Vanessa declared. "We need to stay close to each other, so don’t miss the timing."

Everyone nodded, and then they jumped... Terry could deal with monsters without feeling scared, but soon he realized that he had a fear of heights when they were falling. It was truly a terrible time to realize that...

As Terry discovered that he had a fear of heights, a whirlwind of emotions surged through him, causing a mixture of surprise, unease, and even a sense of vulnerability. The realization that something as seemingly ordinary as heights could trigger such a powerful response stirred a complex range of feelings within him.

Terry questioned himself, wondering why he felt such a strong aversion to heights. He might have doubted his own abilities or resilience, wondering if he was somehow flawed for having this fear.

It didn’t take long for him to realize the source of the problem... it was his lack of control over his body. The loss of control could evoke deep-seated discomfort, intensifying his fear and making it more challenging to cope with the situation.

Before long, Terry realized that he had forgotten to count. In the end, he saw the others opening their parachutes.

"One, two, three, four... fivesixseveneightnineten!" Terry said, and then he activated the parachutes.

Those three saw the airplane getting hit by some fireballs that apparently came out of nowhere from the horizon. Still, soon it began to turn to the side and leave the area. Unfortunately for them, a dark and red cloud began to fly toward them. The cloud was a large group of fire drakes.

The parachutes, designed to regulate the speed of their descent, should have ensured a controlled landing. However, to their dismay, the descent became agonizingly slow. The parachutes seemed to resist the pull of gravity, causing the group to float through the air like weightless specters.

Sensing their vulnerability, the fire drakes closed in on the falling group with unrelenting determination. The air crackled with their presence, suffused with the scorching heat of their bodies. Flames danced along their scales, casting an ominous glow against the darkening sky.
