Chapter 63: Fallen

Terry swiftly drew his icicle bow, and with a focused gaze, he notched an arrow and pulled back the bowstring, channeling his skill and determination into each shot. He released the arrows, and they soared through the air with incredible speed and precision, piercing through the scales of a fire drake, causing it to emit a deafening screech of pain.

"Even with the elemental advantage... they can withstand a direct hit," Terry furrowed his eyebrows.

Simultaneously, Vanessa use her magic to summon bolts of lightning. With a commanding gesture, she directed a surge of electrical energy toward other fire drakes, illuminating the darkened sky with dazzling arcs of electricity. The lightning crackled and danced across the drake’s body, causing it to convulse in agony.

However, the fire drakes, undeterred by the attacks, retaliated with ferocious force. They unleashed a barrage of fireballs, casting them toward the group with deadly accuracy. The fireballs hurtled through the air, leaving trails of scorching heat in their wake.

As Terry skillfully deflected the incoming fireballs with a combination of his icy arrows and Vanessa’s lightning bolts, the attention of the fire drakes momentarily shifted to their relentless counterattacks. The battlefield crackled with elemental clashes, and the air filled with the acrid scent of burning scales.

However, amidst the chaos, Terry’s eyes widened as he noticed the third guild master, armed only with a simple spear, struggling to defend himself against the onslaught of the fire drakes. Terry and Vanessa tried to cover for him, but their efforts were strained as they fought to hold their ground.

The third guild master’s parachute, damaged by the flames and intense heat, began to smolder and catch fire. Panic spread among the group as they realized the dire situation he was in. Time seemed to slow as they watched him descend perilously towards the ground, the flames licking at his parachute, devouring his last lifeline.

The fire drakes, sensing their advantage, swooped down mercilessly, their jaws wide open, ready to claim their unfortunate victim. Despite the desperate attempts of his comrades to divert the fire drakes’ attention, their efforts fell short.

In a heart-wrenching moment, the third guild master, still plummeting through the air, was overwhelmed by the fire drakes. Their scorching flames enveloped him, the sheer ferocity of their attacks extinguishing any last flicker of hope. The once valiant guild master succumbed to the relentless onslaught, his fall interrupted by the merciless jaws of the fire drakes.

Despite the pain that he was filling, the guild master just gritted his teeth... he didn’t want to go down while screaming... he also didn’t want to let the monsters kill him, so he pulled several grenades from under his armor and pulled the pins.

The grenades soared through the air, leaving trails of smoke and fire in their wake. The fire drakes, caught off guard by this unexpected assault, found themselves engulfed in a storm of fiery devastation. The explosive blasts echoed through the skies as the guild master’s determination and bravery manifested in each detonation.

The flames of the fire drakes intertwined with the explosive bursts, their scaly bodies consumed by the deadly combination of fire and shrapnel. The once fearsome creatures writhed and faltered in mid-air, their wings singed, and their bodies were torn apart by the destructive force unleashed upon them.

The third guild master fell, but he bought enough time for Terry and Vanessa to land in the area below. They quickly got rid of the parachutes and sought cover behind some trees. Vanessa quickly pulled a map and tried to understand where they were.

"We just passed the nearest base of hunters close to the border; our meeting point with the other guild master was supposed to be at a military base one hundred and fifty kilometers ahead," Vanessa explained.

"We have a lot of ground to cover," Terry shrugged. "It doesn’t seem like the fire drakes are looking for us anymore; we will have to draw their attention since their focus is to dominate the skies and take down cities. Can you tell if the others are there? If this city was destroyed, it is hard to imagine a military base being left alone."

"The military base was abandoned; we were just going to use to land and use it for meetings," Vanessa explained while closing the map and using her magic communicator. "I can’t contact Louis... it seems that we will have to check things by ourselves."

Terry imagined that the mission would take a while, but it seemed that his guess had been a lot more naive than he had expected. In any case, instead of heading toward the South, they headed toward the city... they were hunters, and half of the job of hunters was to protect human society from falling into the clutches of monsters. There was also a chance that they could find a vehicle there, though.

The city was a good thirty kilometers ahead of them, so Terry and Vanessa began to run with all their might. Terry’s movement speed and leg power increased thanks to his power armor, so he could easily run at eighty kilometers per hour. At the same time, Vanessa could control the wind and make her body a lot lighter.

"We could reach the destination a lot faster if you can do this much," Terry said.

"We need to save energy as much as possible; a vehicle will help us with that," Vanessa said. "Besides, we are on this mission to help people as well."

"Always trying to save somebody," Terry shrugged.

As Terry observed the powerful spear wielded by the other guild master, he couldn’t help but feel a slight temptation to claim it for himself. The thought of possessing such a formidable weapon crossed his mind, tempting him with the allure of increased strength and capabilities. However, at that moment, Terry’s sense of fairness and respect for his fellow guild member took precedence. It was better to let him rest with it.
