Chapter 59: Chapter 59 - Search

"So, three of those piece of shit Knights have disappeared, and we’re supposed to assist the rest in looking for them? Good riddance, I say!"

"Tch, they should all just disappear."

"Yeah, fuck those rotten Nobles."

Mhm, I can totally understand and appreciate their sentiments.

"I understand, but you know we can’t defy them without putting the entire town at risk. And we won’t be helping them, only informing the people that the Knights will be searching the town, which will happen regardless of what we do," Responded Rosary warily.

"Come on, Rose Thorn, you’re definitely stronger than those rich snobs, you could easily wipe them out if you wanted to!"

"Yeah, I like the sound of that, and of course you can count on us to assist you with that, Rose Thorn!"

"Just say the word and we’ll do it, Rose Thorn!"

"U-uh, please don’t call me that when I’m working as a receptionist," She stuttered as she waved her hands out in front of herself, her face turning red.

Damn, that’s cute...she’s so attractive. If only I were a few years older...

"Exactly how invasive will this search be, anyway? Are they going to enter people’s homes?" I inquired as I raised my hand.

"Well...most likely, yes," She replied after a brief pause.

"They could easily kill the residents and then say they only acted in self-defense or something!" Spoke up one of the other Adventurers with a frown.

"The Knight Commander gave her word that no harm would come to-..."

"You know we can’t trust the word of a Knight!"

"Yeah, that would be stupid, they have absolutely no obligation to keep their promises to us. They see us as beneath them and inferior!"

They’re not wrong, but...as much as I hate to admit it, I’m fairly certain that Aries will keep her word. I’m more than happy to be proven wrong and see her turn out to be a scumbag too, but considering everything I’ve seen of her, she’s different from the typical Noble.

The vast majority of the Adventurers in the Guild look pretty opposed to this, but regardless of their stance, it won’t change what the Knights will do. Alright, fine...only because she’s so damn attractive, I’ll help her out...

"Actually, that Knight Commander seems pretty idealistic and naive...it was pretty clear that most of the other Knights don’t like her. And sure enough, so far, no innocent civilians have been attacked or killed.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m certainly not against the idea of exterminating the Knights, I actually love the sound of that...but this is just a small group of them, if even one manages to escape, the capital will respond in aggression and seek to wipe out the entire town.

A group of about a dozen of so Knights is one thing...but do you really want to face an entire army of them? I think I’ll pass on that. So, let’s hold the Knight Commander to her word...and we’ll see if she acts as we expect or proves us wrong. After that...we can make a more informed decision," I suggested with a smirk.

"Hm, now that you mention it, a lot of the Knights were glaring at her yesterday."

"Yeah, that’s true. And she did seem different to what were typically used to from Nobles."

"I really don’t like this...but I suppose that’s no reason to endanger the innocent people that live here."

"Damn it...when you put it like that, it’s hard to refuse."

"Tch, this is the absolute worst."

Despite their complaining, before too much longer, the Guild was almost completely empty, as all the Adventurers had gone out to warn the citizens of the town about the Knights’ search.

"Thanks for that, you really helped. Though, uh...the last bit was a little ominous, if I’m being honest," Remarked Rosary wryly, as she approached me.

"Well, it won’t amount to anything so long as the Knight Commander keeps her word. Personally, I’d dearly love to see her execute some of the other Knights when they inevitably-...I mean, if and when they...-end up breaking her promise," I responded with a grin.

"Let’s just hope that it doesn’t come to-...wait, hold on a second, I avoided mentioning the thing she said about executing her subordinates if they break their word, how did you know about that?" She frowned suspiciously.

"I heard a little bit of what she was saying when I entered the Guild, and pieced it together after you provided more context afterwards," I shrugged in response.

Close one, almost gave away the fact that I possess the Super Hearing Skill. She already knows about my Pocket Dimension, I’d rather not have too many of my abilities known. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

"Hm, I see. Well, anyway...I’d like to ask you to help with informing the townspeople as well, if you don’t mind," She replied, in a tone that made it clear that she wasn’t requesting.

"Ordinarily, I’d say absolutely not. But...I suppose I do owe the Adventurers here for not selling me out yesterday. So, fine, I guess I’ll help out," I sighed reluctantly, before standing up and adding, "By the way, what do you plan to do about the Monsters that have appeared outside the town, especially that Basilisk?"

"Admittedly, with the Knights being here, we’ve put that on hold for now. But don’t worry, we plan to deal with it as soon as possible," She informed me.

"Good to know. I’ll be happy to take on any Monster extermination quests, but I’ll be staying far away from that lake," I responded with a wave, as I headed out of the Guild.

Now, then...I think I’ll just head back to the inn, I’ll inform any people I walk past about the search that the Knights will be conducting shortly. I said I’d help out, not that I’d run myself ragged in doing so.

As I made my way back, I glanced around the area, spotting several of the other Adventurers knocking on doors and stuff. They’re really taking this seriously, aren’t they?

Well, they do live here, and they probably know most of the other people in the town. Personally, I don’t have much of a stake in this, I wouldn’t lose too much sleep if everyone here was killed.

Sure, I’d be disgusted at the Knights and stuff, but beyond that, I doubt I’d care too much. I mean, now that I think about it, the only person who’s name I know is Rosary.

Some others have introduced themselves to me, and I can definitely remember if I really wanted to, but I can’t recall without really digging into my memory, and I can’t be bothered to do that. Whatever happens today, I just hope that the Knights leave soon.

That way, I can leave too. I really don’t want to leave before they do and inadvertently end up having them on my tail. It’ll be easier to avoid them if they leave first. I’d much rather be behind them than have them be behind me.

As I arrived at the inn, I headed in and walked up the stairs after informing the innkeeper about the search. I then got to my room and entered after unlocking the door, shutting and locking it once I was inn.

Well, that was a pretty brief outing, but it’s fine. I’ve really been loving having a bed after so long, and since I plan to leave soon, I want to take full advantage while I still can.

Plus, I can keep Prysm in the Pocket Dimension for a while longer and just chill in the room by myself for once. It’ll be nice to relax without her pestering me the whole time.

I flopped onto the bed with a lazy sigh as I rolled around and buried my face in one of the pillows, stretching my limbs out before letting them drop onto the mattress with a slight creak of the bed springs.

What I wouldn’t give for some digital entertainment right now...sadly, portable game devices don’t exist in this world, at least not yet. There are some consoles, but they’re super expensive, and TVs aren’t cheap either.

Even if I did buy them, since I’ll most likely be constantly on the move for the foreseeable future, I probably won’t get a lot of chances to use them. If only this world was a little bit more advanced, I could be enjoying myself a lot better right now.

In the end, I decided to read a book, not that I had a whole lot of novels or anything. But there were a few that Lycia and Rhyle had put into my Pocket Dimension that day, it was better than nothing.

And after a while, I managed to get pretty into the book I was reading, a tragedy romance novel, the time ticking by as I got engrossed while flipping the pages and getting immersed in the story.

Hm? I’m hearing voices coming from outside the inn. I set down my book and peered out the window, letting out a quiet groan...great, just fucking great, it’s the Knights. I looked out the window just in time to see them enter the building.

Sure enough, a couple of minutes later, someone knocked on the door. Really don’t want to let them in, but I guess that’d just be asking for trouble. I stood up and glanced around the room to make sure there were no signs left out that would give away that I’m not alone.

I then headed for the door after ensuring that the coast was clear, before unlocking and opening the door with a reluctant sigh.

"Apologies for bothering you. This will only take a minute, I need to search this room," I was greeted with an apologetic smile.

Wha-...oh, you’ve gotta be kidding me. Of all people, why’d it have to be her!? Knight Commander Aries Velenet...
