Chapter 86: Descending into the Crypt, Shadow-Stalkers
The deep swamp was completely silent. There were no insect noises, no croaking frogs, and no rustling leaves.
Dante, Mei, and Lila arrived at the edge of a massive stagnant lake.
The water was a sickly glowing fluorescent green. It was thick with toxic sludge.
The smell of necrotic rot was so dense it actually triggered a faint visual distortion in the air above the surface.
[Zone Alert: Lake of Vane]
[Hazard Detected: Absolute Toxicity. Touching the water inflicts Instant Death.]
"Do not touch the water," Dante instructed and pointed at the glowing green sludge.
"I was not planning on taking a swim, Boss," Mei said and wrinkled her nose.
Dante looked out across the lake.
In the absolute center, protruding slightly above the toxic surface, were three intricately carved stone pedestals.
They formed a perfect triangle that surrounded a dark swirling vortex in the water.
"That is the entrance mechanism," Dante said. He pulled the black SSS-Rank quest scroll out of his inventory to confirm the coordinates.
"The City Lord said it requires three distinct mana signatures to unlock."
"How do we get out there?" Lila asked and clutched her wooden staff. "If we cannot touch the water, we cannot swim to the pedestals."
Dante didn’t answer. He just looked at her.
Lila blinked, then looked down at her own hands. "Right. The gravity magic. I can do that."
She stepped forward and reached out toward the lake. She didn’t chant.
[Skill Executed: Astral Bridge]
The gravity over the toxic lake instantly shifted.
The glowing green sludge didn’t freeze or part.
Instead, a series of invisible and highly pressurized gravitational platforms slammed down onto the surface of the water.
They created a solid invisible path leading directly to the three pedestals.
"Walk quickly," Lila said. Her face was tight with concentration. "I cannot hold the density for long."
Dante went first, and his heavy iron boots landed firmly on the invisible bridge.
Mei followed closely behind, and the massive [God-Slaying Skillet] rested on her shoulder.
They reached the center of the lake.
The three stone pedestals were covered in glowing silver runes that pulsed erratically. They fought against the necrotic energy leaking from the vortex below.
"Place your hands on the stone and push your mana into the runes," Dante ordered. He took his position at the lead pedestal.
Lila and Mei took their spots.
"On three," Dante said. "One. Two. Three."
They touched the pedestals simultaneously.
The system interface immediately flared in the center of their vision.
[System Check: Mana Signatures Detected.]
[Signature 1: Anomaly (Cosmic Weight Confirmed).]
[Signature 2: Astral Arcanist (Hidden Class Confirmed).]
[Signature 3: Brawler (High-Density Output Confirmed).]
[Conditions Met. Disengaging Crypt Seals.]
The three stone pedestals violently sank into the lake.
The dark swirling vortex in the center of the triangle abruptly expanded.
The toxic green water was violently sucked downward. It drained away to reveal a massive plunging staircase forged from black basalt that led deep into the earth.
A thick gray miasma immediately billowed out of the dark stairwell and completely obscured the bottom.
[Warning: Necrotic Miasma Detected.]
[Continuous exposure will rapidly degrade maximum health pools.]
"Talismans," Dante commanded.
He didn’t need one since the [Aetherial Nectar] made him completely immune to the rot.
But Lila and Mei pulled the glowing blue crystals from their pockets.
They crushed them simultaneously.
A soft pulsing blue barrier enveloped both of them and actively pushed back the gray mist.
"Keep an eye on the durability of the barrier," Dante warned Lila. "If it shatters, tell me immediately. I will teleport you out."
"Got it," Lila nodded and gripped her staff.
"I will take point," Mei volunteered cheerfully.
She stepped past Dante and walked down the basalt stairs, completely unbothered by the fact that she was entering a death trap.
Dante followed her, and Lila took the rear.
They descended into the Sunken Necropolis of Vane.
The stairs led them deep underground and terminated in a massive vaulted catacomb.
The walls were lined with thousands of ancient and crumbling sarcophagi.
The air was freezing cold, and the only illumination came from the faint blue glow of the barrier talismans of Lila and Mei.
The room was completely silent.
The Intuition stat of Dante flared immediately.
It wasn’t the heavy presence of a single boss. It was the sharp aggressive prickle of multiple hidden threats entirely surrounding them.
"Mei. Stop," Dante said and kept his voice a harsh whisper.
Mei froze instantly. She dropped the frying pan off her shoulder and held it in front of her like a massive iron shield.
"What is it?" Lila asked nervously and peered into the dark catacomb.
"We are surrounded," Dante said and drew the [Dawn-Breaker Blade].
The system interface didn’t pop up with a monster identification. There were no glowing red eyes in the dark.
But Dante heard it. The faint and almost imperceptible scrape of claws on stone.
"Aura," Dante said.
A brilliant flash of silver light erupted in the dark room.
The Grade 8 Doom Harbinger materialized from her pet-space.
Her three starlight tails cast a bright glow that illuminated the immediate area.
The sudden light revealed the ambush.
Standing exactly five feet in front of Mei and completely camouflaged against the dark stone floor was a massive skeletal hound.
It didn’t have fur. It was entirely composed of blackened bone and rotting muscle. It was wrapped in a localized shroud of shifting shadow magic that rendered it functionally invisible in low light.
[Monster Spawn: Crypt-Stalker]
[Tier: Silver]
[Level: 20]
[HP: 15,000 / 15,000]
The light from Aura instantly broke the stealth passive of the hound.
The Crypt-Stalker shrieked and lunged forward with its jagged and bone-crushing jaws aimed directly at the throat of Mei.
Mei didn’t flinch.
She slammed the massive cast-iron skillet directly into the face of the hound.
CLANG!
The [Perfect Block] passive absorbed the entire kinetic impact of the lunge.
The massive Level 20 Silver boss bounced off the pan like it had hit a solid steel wall and staggered backward.
"I see them!" Lila yelled from the back.
The light of Aura had revealed dozens of them. The massive catacomb was crawling with Crypt-Stalkers.
They were dropping down from the high sarcophagi. Their shadow-stealth was completely useless against the intense celestial light radiating from the tiny silver fox.
"They are agile," Dante noted. He watched the hounds recover and begin rapidly circling their formation.
"They are going to try and swarm us from multiple angles. We need to lock them down."
He didn’t use [Cyclone of Ruin]. The massive hurricane would likely shatter the crumbling stone pillars supporting the catacomb ceiling and bring the entire Necropolis down on their heads.
He needed localized and controlled area denial.
"Lila," Dante called out. "Crush them."
Lila didn’t hesitate. She didn’t chant.
She raised her wooden staff and slammed the butt against the stone floor.
[Skill Executed: Gravity Well]
The physics of the massive catacomb violently shifted.
She didn’t target a single hound. She cast the spell in a wide thirty-foot radius directly in front of their formation.
The invisible cylinder of concentrated gravitational force slammed down from the ceiling.
Six Crypt-Stalkers that were preparing to lunge simultaneously hit the gravity well.
The result was instantaneous. The agile and high-speed hounds were instantly flattened against the stone floor.
The sheer and overwhelming atmospheric pressure pinned them down and completely neutralized their evasion stats.
Their black bones cracked loudly under the weight.
[-4,500!]
[-4,500!]
[-4,500!]
"They are pinned!" Lila yelled. Her face was tight with concentration as she maintained the chantless spell and rapidly burned through her mana pool.
"My turn," Dante said.
He didn’t use a Zenith-tier teleport. He just activated the base skill of [Phantom Dash].
Because of [Chrono-Shift], it had zero mana cost and no cooldown.
He vanished.
He materialized directly inside the [Gravity Well] right next to the six pinned hounds.
The sonic boom of his materialization detonated to deal a guaranteed one-second stun and completely locked them down even further.
Dante didn’t swing his sword horizontally. He gripped the [Dawn-Breaker Blade] with both hands and drove it straight down through the skull of the closest pinned hound.
The Gold-tier weapon was amplified by its +50% bonus damage against ’Corrupted’ enemies. It hit the Silver-tier boss with absolutely devastating force.
[-18,000! Critical Hit! OVERKILL!]
The Crypt-Stalker exploded into blue pixels instantly.
Dante chained the skill.
BOOM.
He teleported to the next pinned hound. Another sonic stun. Another brutal downward execution.
BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.
In less than thirty seconds, Dante systematically eradicated the six hounds trapped inside the gravity well of Lila.
He was moving so fast, constantly materializing and detonating sonic booms, that he looked like a lightning strike.
[Target Eliminated: Crypt-Stalker x6]
"Drop the well!" Dante yelled. He teleported back to his starting position next to Mei.
Lila immediately released the spell and gasped for air. Her mana bar had dropped by thirty percent in just five seconds of sustained casting. "That drains so much energy!"
"I have got you covered," Dante said.
Aura hovered above them and let out a soft and musical chime.
[Skill Activated: Resurgence Wave]
The silver pulse washed over the party. It didn’t just heal their HP.
Because Lila was standing inside the domain of Aura, the restorative Aether instantly completely refilled her massively depleted mana pool.
Lila blinked and looked at her full interface. "Wait. Did she just give me mana?"
"Basically," Dante smirked.
The remaining Crypt-Stalkers realized that frontal assaults and stealth tactics were completely useless. They changed their strategy.
Instead of lunging, the massive skeletal hounds began rapidly leaping from pillar to pillar.
They used the verticality of the room to avoid the gravity wells and prepared to drop directly onto the party from above.
"They are on the walls!" Mei yelled and pointed the pan up.
"Pip!" Dante commanded. "Get ready!"
The tiny red dragon was currently hiding inside the tunic of Mei. He popped his head out. "Ready for what?!"
Dante didn’t answer. He sheathed the [Dawn-Breaker Blade].
He reached over his shoulder and unclipped the massive dark recurve bow from his back.
He held the [Bow of the Eclipse].
The Mythic-tier weapon hummed with a deep and resonant purple light. The bowstring was forged from crackling starlight and practically vibrated with contained cosmic energy.
Dante didn’t reach for an arrow. The passive of the bow generated its own ammunition.
He pulled the starlight string back.
A glowing and ethereal purple arrow instantly materialized and notched perfectly against the dark metal.
Dante aimed generally toward the ceiling. He did not even bother to track the incredibly fast and leaping hounds.
The second passive of the bow, [Unerring Flight], guaranteed an auto-aim mechanic that ignored evasion.
He let the string go.
The single purple arrow shot upward and left a trail of crackling starlight.
Mid-flight, the third passive triggered.
[Skill Executed: Eclipse Volley]
The single arrow violently shuddered, then instantly duplicated.
One arrow became ten. Ten became fifty. Fifty became one hundred.
A carpet-bombing of one hundred identical glowing purple arrows filled the entire upper half of the catacomb.
They didn’t fly in a straight line. They aggressively curved in mid-air and actively sought out the primary weak points of the leaping Crypt-Stalkers.
The volley hit.
The sound of a hundred arrows impacting solid bone simultaneously sounded like a avalanche.
The Crypt-Stalkers didn’t even have time to shriek.
The Mythic-tier base damage of 10,000 multiplied by the raw stats of Dante absolutely vaporized the Silver-tier bosses.
Thirty skeletal hounds exploded into a massive and synchronized shower of blue pixels and dropping loot before they ever touched the ground.
"Now, Pip!" Dante yelled.
The tiny red dragon didn’t hesitate. Recognizing the massive loot drop, Pip shot out of the tunic of Mei like a bullet.
He flew rapidly across the room. He expertly vacuumed up the raining silver coins and dropped gear in mid-air.
He stuffed them into his inventory before they could even hit the dusty stone floor.
The massive catacomb fell completely silent.
The first room of the SSS-Rank Sunken Necropolis was entirely cleared in less than a minute.
Lila stared at the massive bow in the hand of Dante.
"You did not even aim," Lila whispered in absolute horror.
"I do not have to," Dante said and re-clipped the bow to his back. "Let us keep moving. We have got a Lich to kill."
