Chapter 248: Dream

"Yes, we packed the Net guns. Fred, can you focus on driving, please?"

"This thing is on auto drive. I don’t need to focus on it."

"Boss, he’s just afraid. It’s normal."

"Yeah, we all are. But can’t you be like John? Look how silent he is."

"John, are you not— John? Are you alright?"

Stanley’s eyes focused on the face of the man who looked at him as he called out his fake name. Fred was looking back at him from the front of the van.

He shook his head, getting rid of the headache. "Yeah, I’m... I’m fine," Stanley answered, an answer he didn’t believe in himself. "I just... I think I fell asleep."

They were on the van, making their way to East Vanli.

"Sleep if you need to," Nova said. She was at the front of the van, next to Fred. Stanley was on the seats behind them with Sol next to him. He knew what was behind him.

Vera was on the back of her computer, sitting next to a pile of bags which were all guns and weapons.

"No, I’m fine," Stanley said. "I don’t need sleep. I just... I think I had a weird dream."

He looked at the two that stared back at him. Fred’s face brought him a pang of pain, one that came from his dream.

’What the fuck was that?’ Stanley thought to himself, remembering each moment so clearly. ’What sort of dream was that? Or was that even a dream?’

Stanley wondered if what he had just seen, what he had just experienced, was in fact his foresight working in a weird way. Was that all true what he had seen? Or was it really just a dream?

But it was too vivid, too... real to be a dream. But then again, all dreams felt like that when they were dreaming. He had to find out if that was true.

His hands reached out to another hand that was next to him and tore out the watch that was on it. "Huh? What are you doing?" Sol’s voice filled him, but he didn’t care.

"Vera!" he shouted, making the girl look up to the front suddenly.

"What?" she asked, confused.

Stanley tossed her the watch. "Can you look through that for something?" he asked.

"Uhh... what am I looking for?" the girl asked. "And whose watch is this? Isn’t this Sol’s?"

"John?" Nova looked at him half concerned, half baffled. "What’s going on?"

"I had a dream," Stanley said, not knowing how to explain it all, but having to start somewhere nonetheless. "A vivid dream about meeting your brother and fighting him."

"Just now?" Nova asked with a puzzled look.

"Just now," Stanley said.

"John, what are you doing?" Sol asked.

"Are you worried about my brother too?" Nova asked. "As I said, you do not have to fight him. I will do the fighting. You just—"

"You’re too weak," Stanley said. "I’m sorry, but if what I saw in my dream is real then you are too weak. You and Fred, both of you are useless."

"Woah! Uncalled for," Fred cried out from the front.

Nova’s eyes widened and a flash of anger passed through him. "I have been preparing to fight my brother for months. You cannot just say I am weak when we are this close. And because of what? A simple dream?"

"I’m afraid it might not be just a dream," Stanley said. "It might be a premonition of the future."

"And what? Only you and Sol are strong enough to fight my brother? I’m not?" she asked.

"Sol doesn’t fight," Stanley said. "He is with your brother. He has been the entire time."

The entire van went silent for a few seconds. Eyes flashed all around, all except Sol who only stood still. "John, it is not right to accuse someone like this," Sol said. "I thought we were friends."

"I’ll apologize if I was in the wrong," he said and turned to look at Nova. "But we’re about to fight a fucking Nova. I’m not taking my chances here if we were with a traitor the entire time."

"John, what are you talking about?" Nova asked, now somewhat angry. "Are you going mad? It was just a dream. There is no way Sol is—"

"Do you know a man named Ogre? Big guy, can’t be beaten down, works for your brother," Stanley asked.

Sol flinched and Nova’s eyes went wide. "How... do you know that name?" Nova asked. "How could you know about him?"

"I told you, I saw the future," Stanley said, the expression from the two making it clear what he had experienced was in fact the future. "Fred, can you use your powers if one of your arms breaks?"

"What?" Fred asked. "No, it wouldn’t."

"See?" Stanley looked back at Nova. "I saw the future. I know what’s happening. Sol betrays us. You can do nothing to Garren, and..."

His eyes flashed toward Fred who was expecting to speak about him. "And you die," Stanley finished his words. They all stared at each other for a few more moments, trying to figure out what was just said.

Stanley huffed as he slumped back in his seat, letting the three remain in silence. Nova’s eyes slowly moved toward Sol, her mind rushing through a million things.

Stanley felt Vera nudge him from the back and turned around to see her confused look, holding on to the watch that he had given her nearly a minute ago.

"What did you want to do with this?" she asked him again.

"Nova’s brother knew we were coming, no... knows we are coming. It was Sol who gave away our information. Can you check his watch and see if he’s been communicating with someone else?" he asked.

"Um, sure," Vera said and got on with it.

"John," Fred spoke. "I can understand your nervousness, and..." he couldn’t find the words. "What I’m trying to say is, why do you know what’s going to happen? Why do you believe you know what is going to happen?"

Stanley wanted to tell them, but he couldn’t. There was still one more thing he needed to do even after this. He couldn’t reveal his secrets just yet.
