Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse With My Military System
Chapter 349: At the Zone
Two days later, in Shanghai.
"This is Specters 0-1, we are approaching the zone, how to copy," Graves said.
"This is Eagle Actual, we copied you Specter 0-1, we are monitoring your approach in Shanghai, and no anomalies or movement were detected near the previous encounter site. Maintain visual contact and proceed with caution," responded Eagle Actual, their voice crackling slightly through the comms.
Graves nodded to his team, their faces set in determined lines under the glow of the red cabin lights inside the Blackhawk helicopter. The rotors thundered above them, a relentless beat against the quiet of the pre-dawn hour. As the helicopter hovered above the designated drop zone, a gust of wind whipped through the open doors, carrying the faint, acrid scent of smoke from the city below.
"Alright, Specters hook up!" Graves commanded, his voice barely audible over the roar of the helicopter. One by one, his squad attached their rappelling lines to the metal floor rings. Their gear clinked and cluttered with each movement.
With a final check of his harness, Graves stepped to the edge of the helicopter’s open door, his gaze sweeping the darkened landscape of Shanghai below. The city was eerily silent and dark as there was no electricity in the area. The only way they could see was in their built-in night vision of the Titan’s Guard.
Graves gave a hand signal, and without another word, he stepped out into the open air, the rappelling line hissing as it uncoiled rapidly. He landed with a soft thud on the pavement, the suit absorbing the impact.
One after another, his team followed. Each member landed safely and efficiently, quickly unhooking their lines and gathering in a tight perimeter around Graves.
"Form up, move out," Graves instructed, his voice low. The team moved silently, their boots making soft sounds against the debris-strewn pavement as they advanced. Each member scanned the shadows, their weapon systems at the ready.
Their mission was clear: investigate the origins of the creature they had engaged previously and gather any data that might prevent future incidents. As they moved deeper into the city, they found the site where the monstrous creature emerged. It was like a sinkhole. that had opened up right in the middle of what used to be a bustling urban block. The edges were ragged, with asphalt and sidewalk concrete jaggedly torn apart, revealing the dark cavity below.
"Watch your step," Graves murmured, his eyes scanning the gaping hole. With a nod from him, the team began their jump into the sinkhole. The walls were steep and uneven, littered with debris and exposed rebar that jutted out like the bones of the city.
As they reached the bottom, their boots crunched on a mix of gravel and old, broken tiles. The beam of their helmet lights revealed an expansive, underground space that was once part of Shanghai’s railway network. The skeletal remains of what used to be tracks lay twisted among piles of rubble, and the faded signs still hung from what remained of the ceiling, indicating this was once a major station.
Graves signaled for two of his team members to secure the perimeter while he and the others began to inspect the area.
As they ventured deeper into the shadowy confines of the abandoned station, Graves’ attention was suddenly drawn to a peculiar anomaly on his helmet’s thermal imaging display. An intense heat signature was emanating from a section of the wall far from the main area they were scanning. The shape was large and distinct, almost perfectly oval, reminiscent of a gigantic egg embedded within the structure.
"Specters on me," Graves whispered. The team regrouped quickly, their own devices confirming the reading as they approached the heat source.
The wall before them was unremarkable at first glance, a blend of old, cracked tiles and exposed pipes. But as they got closer, the surface seemed to subtly pulsate, a faint glow emitting from cracks that webbed across the surface. The heat was palpable now, washing over them in waves as if the object behind the wall was alive and breathing.
"Looks like we’ve found something extraordinary," Graves remarked, his gaze locked on the thermal display. "Are you getting this Eagle?"
"Yeah we are looking at it right now," Richard replied. "Shadow 0-1, I need a clear visual on that thing."
"Copy," Graves’s arm raised to signal Reynolds, who was already positioning the plasma cutter. "We’re cutting in."
Reynolds fired up the cutter, the bright blue beam slicing through the darkness like a laser through fog. The plasma cutter made quick work of the old wall, melting through the bricks and mortar with a hissing sound that filled the air with the acrid scent of superheated materials.
As the section of the wall fell away, the entire team stepped back instinctively. The revealed object was indeed egg-shaped, massive in scale, its surface a glossy, semi-translucent material that seemed to shimmer with internal light. The heat signature spiked, clearly visible on their displays, indicating a significant amount of thermal energy contained within.
Graves approached cautiously, his android suit’s sensors adjusting to compensate for the heat. He reached out, his hand stopping just shy of the surface, feeling the radiant heat without touching it.
"It’s warm... very warm," he reported.
"Is it possible that the monsters hatched from one of those eggs?" Richard asked.
"Possibly," Graves responded, focusing on the task at hand. He activated the advanced scanning features of the Titan’s Guard, aiming to analyze the contents of the egg without direct contact.
His heads-up display flickered as it adjusted to the new task, overlaying a variety of data points over his vision.
"Initiating scan now," Graves informed his team. The display showed a complex array of information: temperature gradients, density readings, and biological signatures that were unfamiliar to their databases.
As the scan progressed, the internal structure of the egg began to materialize on his screen. The contents appeared to be in a state of early development but were distinctly biological, showing signs of cellular activity and growth. The visualizer highlighted areas of concentrated activity, suggesting that whatever was inside was not only alive but possibly growing at an accelerated rate.
Graves relayed the findings back to Eagle Actual. "The scan indicates active biological processes inside the egg. It’s like nothing we’ve cataloged. Whatever’s inside might be related to the creatures we encountered, but it’s still developing."
"Eagle Actual copies, Shadow 0-1. Maintain a safe distance and keep monitoring the egg. We’re sending a bio-haz team to your location for retrieval and further analysis. Good work."
"Understood, waiting for the bio-haz team," Graves confirmed. He instructed his team to set up a perimeter around the egg, ensuring that no further disturbance occurred until the specialized team arrived.
