The Alpha's Mark
Chapter 97: A Narcissistic Manipulator Vs A Tactical Manipulator
The tension in the room thickened into an suffocating pressure. Odesse lunged forward, her silver eyes widening in sheer disbelief. "What! You must be crazy, Azure!"
Azure met her gaze with a serene, unbothered smile. She raised her hands in a lazy, mocking gesture. "Alright, alright. I shall let her down now."
With a careless wave of her fingers, the invisible hold snapped. Cara dropped heavily to the hard floorboards. The maid’s mouth opened, stretching into a silent, agonizing gasp, but no sound came out. Odesse rushed to her side instantly, collapsing to her knees and pulling Cara into her arms.
"Are you okay, Cara? Hold on," Odesse pleaded.
Cara clutched Odesse’s gown with white-knuckled intensity, her chest heaving as tears streamed down her face in absolute silence. Odesse looked up at Azure, her voice trembling with rage. "Release her voice, Azure!"
Azure turned her head slowly, looking down at them as if noticing a minor inconvenience. "Oh, yes. I totally forgot." She flicked her finger with a faint, quiet click. Instantly, the silent barrier broke, and Cara’s choked cries finally burst aloud into the hall.
Odesse held her tightly, rocking her against her chest. Azure watched the display, her expression shifting back to a cold, demanding professional mask. "So. I have laid out exactly what I went over there to do. Now, I need your answer, Odesse."
Odesse looked up from the floor, her face stained with tears. "Why are you doing this, Azure? Why are you dragging completely innocent lives into this feud?"
Azure let out a sharp, mocking laugh that echoed off the high rafters. "But Odesse, you can save these innocent lives. All you have to do is give Valex over to me, and the spell will be lifted entirely."
Odesse’s breath caught. She looked over at Valex, whose amber eyes were already locked onto hers with a fierce, protective intensity.
Azure smirked at the silent exchange. "Alright then. I shall give you until tomorrow. You see how incredibly nice I am? I give you so much grace, Odesse." She turned her gaze to the King, her tone dropping into a sweet, unsettling melody. "My king, you do not need to interfere in this, okay? Because I will surely never hurt you. I could never bring myself to harm the one I love."
She stepped forward, raising her hand to caress his cheek. Before her fingers could make contact, Valex recoiled sharply, his expression hardening into pure disdain. Left with her hand hanging uselessly in the empty air, Azure’s smile faltered. Her fingers tightened into a rigid fist. She dragged her arm back to her side, her posture stiffening as she turned her back on him.
"Just so you know exactly when someone’s life has been forfeit," Azure called out, her voice echoing sharply as she walked away, "at midnight, there will be a glowing red star in the sky. It will signify a blood tax for Valex. You are the true villain of this story, Odesse. You could easily give me Valex and save millions of people, but I know how selfish you are. You will choose your own desires over their survival."
Odesse looked down at Cara, who had closed her eyes in pure exhaustion, then back toward Azure.
"But you can remove that title," Azure added, tilting her head with a cruel smirk. "Save them. I mean, is Valex’s life truly worth more than millions of others, Odesse? Remember your values and your high principles. You and I both know you wouldn’t want to cut the very hands that fed you when you were in desperate need."
Odesse’s head bowed in solemn, silent defeat. The grand hall fell into a deadly, heavy quiet.
Azure turned to the two enchanted Hisponian soldiers standing by the threshold. "Get my belongings from the carriage, would you? I brought so many amazing things back with me."
The soldiers offered a rigid bow and pulled open the heavy palace doors, exposing a crowd of terrified servants who had been eavesdropping. The servants scattered and fled in a panic. The soldiers stepped out and closed the doors behind them with a loud, resounding thud that rattled the windows.
Azure looked around the high-ceilinged room, letting out a soft, satisfied sigh as a warm smile returned to her face. "I am very tired. I need some rest."
She walked toward the grand staircase, her heels clicking rhythmically against the stone. At the first landing, she paused and looked down at the court one last time. "I shall not be staying with His Highness in the royal bedchamber. So, until Odesse hands him over to me, you and him may remain there. I shall occupy my private quarters for now."
She turned and vanished into the upper hallways, the steady clink of her shoes fading into the distance.
Odesse sank lower against the floor, clutching Cara as bitter tears finally spilled over. "What have I done?" she murmured brokenly. "This is all my fault. All of it."
Valex walked over swiftly, bending down beside them. He wrapped a heavy, reassuring arm around her shoulders, pulling her close. "It is going to be okay, my love. We will figure this out together."
A few feet away, Lady Calista stood beside Kael, her entire frame trembling from the gruesome display she had just witnessed. Tears rolled silently down her pale cheeks.
Valex looked up, his expression turning sharp and focused. "Kael. Escort Lady Calista back to her pack immediately. Ensure she reaches her territory safely."
Kael gave a firm nod. "Yes, Your Highness."
Valex then looked at Calista, his voice softening with genuine remorse. "I truly apologize that you had to witness such madness in my court today."
Calista shook her head quickly, wiping her face as she stepped toward the exit. "It is okay, Your Highness."
"Please," Valex added, his face darkening with worry, "let this matter stay strictly within these palace walls. No one outside can find out. Not even your husband."
Calista paused, looking back with absolute gravity. "You have my utmost pledge, King Valex."
Valex forced a small, grateful nod. He glanced at Kael, who opened the massive threshold door for the noblewoman. "Let us leave, Lady Calista," Kael said quietly. She followed him out into the courtyard, and the heavy oak door clicked shut behind them, leaving the King and Queen along with Cara alone in the dimming hall. Valex pulled Odesse up into his chest, holding her securely as he pressed a deep, lingering kiss against the crown of her head.
...
Upstairs, within the locked confines of Azure’s private chambers, the heavy, sweet scent of her signature perfume already filled the air. She paced across the floor, a manic smile stretching across her lips.
"Now, this should speed things up a little more," she whispered to the empty room. She stopped by the window, looking out over the grounds. "Odesse will have absolutely no choice. She will have to surrender Valex to save the lives of those Hisponians."
She let out a loud, echoing laugh that cut off instantly into a sharp smirk. She touched her lower lip, her eyes narrowing as she resumed her slow pacing.
"But I know how she thinks. Odesse won’t give him up that easily. She literally fought death itself for that man, which means she is bound to try something foolish, even if it means putting her own life at risk." Azure paused, turning toward her vanity mirror with absolute confidence. "It doesn’t matter. Because no matter what clever tricks she tries, she will never be able to revert the spell or break the tether."
She smoothed down her perfect hair, tilting her head with a chilling grin. "Because I am the only one who holds the key to breaking it. And how does it break? Only by her handing Valex over to me."
She burst into a thin, piercing laugh so loud and sharp that the glass ornaments on the table seemed to shriek in response. Throwing herself backward onto the mattress, she stared up at the ceiling, her smile never fading.
"Do not think I underestimate you, Odesse," Azure whispered into the quiet room, her fingers idly caressing the silk sheets. "I may be crazy, but my mind still thinks straight. I know you will try absolutely anything to save both the King and the pack. But trust me... I am ever ready for whatever little plan you have waiting."
...
The night returned far quicker than either of them anticipated. The air outside remained thick and sour, carrying a heavy, stagnant pressure that made the nose bleed if inhaled too deeply.
The heavy door to the royal bedchamber opened, and Valex stepped inside, closing it quietly behind him. He scanned the dim room, finding it empty, until his eyes caught the silhouette of Odesse standing out on the stone corridor, staring blankly up at the dark sky.
A faint, tired smile touched his lips. He walked over to her silently, wrapping his strong arms around her waist from behind and pulling her back against his chest. He pressed a soft, warm kiss to her cheek. "Do not worry, my love," he murmured against her skin. "I shall find a way to fix this."
"How, my king?" Odesse asked, her voice hollow as she looked up at the stars. "How can we possibly fix this now? I am the one who caused this. I should have ended Azure the very day I returned to this palace. Instead, I wanted to see her suffer, and now look who is being tortured. It is me, and innocent people are paying the price."
Valex tightened his grip around her waist, anchoring her to his frame, but she shook her head, the guilt consuming her.
"Look at Cara, my king. She almost died today simply because she wanted to protect me. I have caused nothing but absolute pain since the moment I came back. Maybe... maybe I should have just died when I was lost in that forest."
Valex pulled back immediately, gripping her shoulders and turning her around to face him fully. His eyes were warm but deeply tired as he looked down at her. "No. Do not ever say that. You being alive is the only hope we have that the future will be alright."
Tears spilled over Odesse’s cheeks, catching the dim moonlight. "Did you not hear what she said, my king? She said this is her story. It goes exactly how she wants it to go. Everything is playing right into her hands. Even when I think I have managed to get the upper hand, she immediately turns it around and reminds me that I can never surpass her."
Valex placed his warm, large palms against her cold cheeks, forcing her to look directly into his eyes. "Then you make this your story, Odesse. Become the author of your own path inside the fractured story she is trying to write. Bend her definition of reality. Make her second-guess her own thoughts."
Odesse blinked through her tears, her whisper barely audible. "How?"
"Azure is a narcissistic egotist," Valex explained, his voice steady and calculating. "She truly believes the entire world revolves around her actions. I will not deny that she is incredibly smart and analytical, and she holds absolutely no empathy or real emotion. She demands to always have the upper hand. So... let her have it."
Odesse looked at him, her brow furrowing in confusion. "What do you mean, my king?"
"Make her think she has won, my love. Make her believe she has calculated your every possible move. But you must be careful—do not make it too obvious, because she is sharp and will realize if you are plotting something. Do not appear too weak, because she knows better than to underestimate you, but do not look too confident either, or she will resort to even more dangerous methods to reclaim control."
He cradled her face with both hands, his thumb gently wiping away a stray tear. "You are an incredibly brilliant person, Odesse, and I am going to help you. I know you will find a way through this. Whatever decision you make, I will be standing right by your side, because I know how deeply you think before you act."
Odesse closed her eyes, leaning into his touch. "My brain feels so clogged, Valex. I feel entirely numb. She gave us a reprieve until tomorrow, but the moment the clock strikes midnight and you are still with me, someone dies."
Valex slowly released her face, his gaze turning unyielding. "My love, if you are unable to find a viable solution by that time... then I shall give myself up to Azure."
Odesse’s eyes flew open in utter shock. "What! No!"
"I cannot allow the blood of an innocent pack to weigh on your conscience forever," Valex said softly. "And who knows what Azure might do after a few days pass? She may eventually decide to harm you, and I will not risk that. But choosing this does not mean I do not trust you, Odesse. I know you can overcome her. She may be manipulative and cunning, but you are a true tactician. Your greatest asset is your heart. But remember, you are a queen—my queen. And as a ruler, you must remember that manipulation does not always have to come from a place of evil to be effective."
Valex reached down, taking both of her trembling hands into his own. "I only wish I could fight this battle for you, but in this domain, I am entirely useless."
Before he could finish, Odesse lunged forward, throwing her arms around him and hugging him with every ounce of strength she had left. "No, you are not useless, my king! You have no idea how much strength your words have just given me. Knowing that you are standing with me gives me more power than anything else in this world, and I truly appreciate you."
She pulled back slowly, looking up into his amber eyes with renewed focus. "You are a priceless king, and a priceless husband. I could never do any of this without you by my side."
Slipping her arms around his neck, she pulled him down into a soft, desperate kiss. Above them, the stagnant wind stirred slightly as the dim moonlight broke through the thick air, bathing them both in its pale, quiet light.
