The Alpha's Mark
Chapter 98: Making More Promises Than Keeping
The morning inside the Moonlight Pack palace felt heavy, the very air thick with a lingering, suffocating pressure.
Odesse sat up slowly in her bed chamber as a female servant walked in, her eyes heavy with exhaustion.
With a slight bow, the servant spoke quietly. "Good morning, Your Highness."
Odesse looked at her, her voice raspy. "Where is Cara?"
"Your Highness, Cara is still unable to move," the servant replied gently.
Odesse pressed a hand to her forehead, a pang of guilt striking her. "Oh yes, I completely forgot. I shall go check up on her as soon as I freshen up." She swung her legs out of bed and began walking toward the bath chamber, but stopped when the servant spoke again.
"Your Highness, Lady Azure has requested that you have breakfast with her at the royal dining hall."
Odesse turned around, her expression hardening. "She wants me to dine with her?"
The servant nodded slowly.
"Alright. Tell her I shall be there soon," Odesse said. The servant bowed once more and slipped out of the room, closing the door quietly behind her. Alone again, Odesse whispered to herself, "I wonder what she wants to talk about now."
Moments later, Odesse entered the grand dining hall. She walked toward the long table and found Azure already seated on the opposite side, looking perfectly composed.
Azure smiled warmly, though the warmth didn’t reach her eyes. "Odesse, good morning. I hope you slept well."
Odesse stood beside her chair, her face a mask of stoic indifference.
"Why the grim expression, Odesse?" Azure asked, gesturing to the empty seat. "Please, have a seat. I mean, it is your palace, after all."
Odesse pulled out the chair opposite Azure and sat down slowly. Azure clapped her hands sharply, and a line of maids immediately stepped forward, placing an elaborate spread of steaming dishes across the table.
Odesse looked down at the abundant feast and frowned. "Why is there so much food?"
"As wolves, we have large appetites," Azure noted lightly. "I see no reason why you should be surprised." She paused, delicately tapping her lips with a feigned look of realization. "Ah, that is true. I forgot you lived as a human for so long, and that you are half-human."
Odesse rolled her eyes, refusing to let the insult bait her. "Why did you invite me here, Azure?"
Azure took her spoon, lifting a portion of hot soup and blowing on it gently before taking a sip. "Well, Odesse, I simply wanted us to become closer. And, of course, I want to know your answer." She leaned forward, a sharp smirk cutting across her face. "Time is ticking, Odesse. Or have you forgotten?"
Odesse picked up her fork and knife, cutting a piece of medium-rare meat. She ate it calmly, chewing thoroughly before looking up with a steady smile. "Of course I have not, Azure. I did some deep thinking last night."
Azure’s smirk widened. "So, what is your decision?"
Odesse picked up the linen napkin, patted her mouth, and set it firmly on the table. "I shall not hand Valex over to you."
Azure’s eyes widened slightly, followed by a dark, knowing smile. "I knew you would say that. What exactly have you planned, Odesse?"
Odesse stood up slowly, the legs of her chair screeching against the stone floor. She looked down at Azure with absolute resolve. "Whatever it is I have planned is none of your business, Azure." She pushed her chair back. "I shall take my leave."
She turned and began to walk away, but paused after a few steps, casting a final glance over her shoulder. "Oh, and yes—I did have an incredible appetite today, but seeing your face completely ruined it. Hopefully, I get it back before the day is done."
Azure rose from her seat, her voice chillingly calm. "And by the time the day is done, a life will already be gone."
Odesse kept her smile fixed, turning her head back forward as she marched out of the dining hall.
Left behind in the quiet room, Azure stared at the empty doorway, her jaw tightening. "I wonder what you really have planned, Odesse," she muttered. Her chair scraped back as she prepared to leave, prompting a nervous servant to step forward.
"What should we do with the remaining food, Lady Azure?" the servant asked dynamically.
Azure snapped a glare at her, causing the maid to look down instantly. "Throw it away for all I care. I have lost my appetite as well."
Azure swept out of the hall. Once she was gone, the servant raised her head, a look of pure disgust crossing her face as she looked toward the doorway, then back to the untouched feast. "Throw it away, my foot," she muttered under her breath. A hungry, eager smile broke across her face as she looked at the magnificent spread. "Look at all this delicious food."
...
Far from the suffocating tension of the Moonlight Pack, the air in the Apex Pack was fresh, clean, and breathable.
King Valex sat in a private chamber before the High Chief, whose face remained hidden behind a mask. Commander Kael stood silently behind Valex, his arms crossed.
"High Chief, that is everything that has happened," Valex explained, his voice heavy with tension. "At least, it is the most that I can currently remember."
The High Chief replied, his voice calm, steady, and gentle. "I was already aware of all of this, Valex."
Valex looked up, visibly shocked. "You were?"
The High Chief nodded slowly.
"Then will you be able to help Odesse?" Valex asked, a note of desperation creeping into his tone. "You are deeply connected to the spirit world just as she is. You have a direct connection to the Moon Spirit, do you not?"
"Yes, I do," the High Chief responded. "But I cannot interfere with Odesse’s fate."
Valex’s patience finally snapped, his voice rising. "What do you mean by that?"
"This battle is for Odesse to fight alone, Valex."
"But people will suffer if this continues!" Valex argued, his fists clenching.
"No one will die, Valex," the High Chief stated firmly. "Have a little faith in your wife."
Valex looked down at his hands, his broad shoulders tensing. "I do, but..."
"But nothing, Valex," the High Chief interrupted. "Do you really believe Odesse will stand by and let innocent lives be destroyed? Trust your wife, and do not let fear overcome your senses."
Valex raised his head as the High Chief continued, his tone deeply solemn. "Even though days may pass and Odesse does not submit to Azure’s wishes, you must trust whatever it is she is working toward, even if she cannot tell you what it is. Your absolute trust in her is her greatest strength right now. Do not let it falter."
Valex stared at the masked figure, concern written in every line of his face, before lowering his head in silent acceptance.
The High Chief looked down, speaking in a low whisper. "Azure... she utilizes a form of magic that was banned years ago. She is incredibly cunning. But I am entirely certain that Odesse can outsmart her."
...
Back at the Moonlight Pack, Odesse walked quietly into the servant quarters. She stopped before a familiar wooden door, knocked gently, and stepped inside.
The room was bright, illuminated by the morning sun pouring through the window as a heavy breeze stirred the curtains. Odesse walked over to the bedside where Cara lay resting and sat down on a small wooden stool near her head.
Looking down at her companion, tears began to track down Odesse’s cheeks. "I am so incredibly sorry this happened to you, Cara," she whispered, her voice cracking. "This is all my fault."
She took Cara’s limp hand in her own, pressing her forehead against her knuckles as she closed her eyes. "I am so sorry... I do not know how long it will take for you to recover, or what I am supposed to do. I cannot keep making promises because I have already made more than I can keep. Please forgive me."
Suddenly, Odesse felt a faint, gentle pressure on her head.
She opened her eyes and looked up. Cara’s eyes were open, fluttering weakly, and a very faint, tired smile touched her lips.
Odesse’s face lit up instantly. "Cara!"
Cara gasped softly, her voice barely a whisper. "Do not say things like that, Your Highness. It is not your fault at all. It was mine... I should have been much more careful."
Odesse shook her head vigorously. "No, I should have protected you. You and Valex are the only people who truly care about me in this world. I almost lost both of you, and I cannot allow that to happen."
Cara struggled to form the words, but her smile remained steady. "It is going to be alright, Your Highness. I know for a certainty that you will come up with a solution. You always do."
Odesse lowered her gaze, her shoulders slumping. "Do not have so much faith in me right now, Cara. I do not feel much like myself."
"Well, I have enough faith for the both of us," Cara replied weakly. She squeezed Odesse’s fingers. "I know you will find a way out of this predicament because you are amazing, Your Highness."
Odesse managed a genuine smile, wiping her tears. "Thank you, Cara. You and His Highness are truly my biggest sources of strength right now. The faith you both have in me... I promise I shall not take it for granted."
Cara smiled, her eyelids growing heavy as her hand went completely limp and relaxed against the mattress.
Odesse’s eyes widened in sudden horror. She stood up instantly, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Cara? Cara, wake up! Open your eyes!" Panic seizing her throat, Odesse turned toward the door, preparing to run out into the hallway to scream for the royal physicians.
"What is going on, Your Highness?" a weak voice called out from behind her.
Odesse froze mid-step. She turned around slowly and felt a massive wave of relief wash over her as she saw Cara’s eyes blinking open in confusion. "I... I thought... I thought you were..."
"Dead?" Cara finished the sentence for her, letting out a weak, raspy chuckle. "Of course I am not dead, Your Highness. I was simply drifting off to sleep. I cannot afford to die yet—I still need to be alive to see Azure shed tears first."
She laughed softly, and Odesse couldn’t help but chuckle along with her, the crushing weight on her chest lightening just a fraction as she watched her friend.
"Can I please go to sleep now?" Cara asked playfully, her eyes drifting shut again.
Odesse smiled warmly, tucking the blanket around her shoulders. "Of course you can, Cara."
"Do not worry, Odesse," Cara murmured into her pillow, her voice fading into slumber. "Everything is going to be fine."
